I suppose if you count a bunch of people saying one of two options in a list a conversation although that isn't what @Stuckinthemiddlewithyouuhoh asked for

She's expecting something that people have droned on about for centuries to be settled, literally no one is going to change what they do after reading this, I don't get the point or why anyone would expect them to

You are taking it to literally. If you don't like it swipe past

Whipped cream has no place in this discussion! Thick clotted cream, balancing perfectly well on top of the jam. See?

Aw come on, anyone can see that that’s a sticky landslide waiting to happen and there’s a significant risk of half of the yummy goodness is going to be inside a nearby patiently waiting dog within seconds?

Is it too early on a Sunday to be wondering if the little Co-op sells Rodda’s?

Not possible unless it’s a very skinny scone 🤷‍♀️

Or you’re being stingy with the cream and jam. Which is an offence.

It all tastes the same to me but I would probably do it cream first if I were preparing it myself. No idea why I'd do it that way but just the way I'd do it.

Cream first, because it takes the place of butter (only more generously applied!)

Exactly. Cream is the butter substitute, jam on top.

I've been brave and forced myself to eat scones today. I actually bought them yesterday because I had a craving for a cream tea, and then didn't fancy them once I'd been to the shop. (To the PP who mentioned the Co-op selling Rodda's clotted cream, ours does)
I made one each way.

My findings:

Cream first, I was able to get a good layer of each topping, spread fairly evenly. Although co-op scones are shit so i had to be very careful spreading the cream as it crumbled. Looks prettier imo and I prefer the taste this way.

Jam first.
The jam was easier to spread directly onto the scone than the cream had been. But then it was nigh on impossible to get an even spread/dollop of cream on top without the jam falling off. I ended up with sticky jam fingers.

Excuse my lack of plate. I'm a heathen.

Well he’s wrong 😉
It depends on where you live obviously.

Yes, what I’ve learnt from this thread is that it all depends on whether the cream is clotted or not.

I always have a scone (skone to rhyme with phone) with whipped cream. I’m in Ireland and clotted cream has only become available in shops quite recently. It’s still not widely available. If you’re offered cream with a scone in a café or hotel restaurant it’ll always be whipped cream here in my experience.

I only ever had clotted cream served with a scone once and that was on a flight. I really didn’t like it, but then I don’t like butter either. Somehing about the texture. And I don’t like thinking of clots when I’m eating.

So, I think it again depends where you are and what you’re used to. Scones with jam (first) and whipped cream are absolutely delicious 😊 The scone must be very fresh and preferably slightly warm. And not too much breadsoda. Many a good scone has been ruined by too heavy a hand with the breadsoda.

To be fair, I've only ever had scones with whipped cream once. And I'd forgotten they were a thing until this thread. It's always clotted cream in my mind! Whipped cream on top makes sense.

Scown, and jam topped with cream. Anything else is just plain wrong. Obviously!!
