Thank you, I had no idea about all this hospital-ship-diplomacy.

Plus as PP say, it raises obvious questions.

Who is the ship really carrying on any given voyage?

And why the governor of Louisiana? Louisiana!

America First, eh...

Spandauer · 22/02/2026 09:58

I was also unaware of the 'hospital ship' information. And worrying that he's back on to Greenland again.

As mentioned by @RedTagAlan, Louisiana(other states are available) is not without its own health care problems.

Why Louisiana healthcare ranks in bottom 10 of US states.

Greenland apparently provided emergency medical treatment to a US submariner in the last 24 hours.

Yes, I think he saw that and his befuddled head told him to order a hospital ship.

Ach, that's just a petty detail in Trump world.

It explains why CNN reports :

"CNN has reached out to the White House, the Danish Embassy in Washington, Landry’s office, the Danish government and Greenland’s parliament for more details. The Pentagon referred questions to US Northern Command, which in turn referred questions to the US Navy. The Navy did not immediately respond to a request for comment."

I can feel a monty python style song coming on.

Louisiana on the other hand. Firmly on the bottom of the US healthcare league. So far down, that they could close all their hospitals and clinics and not drop any places. There being nowhere for them to drop to.

Not just that, but aren’t they one of the anti-abortion states where women get imprisoned for having miscarriages? Or am I scare-mongering?

As this gains traction:

Trump sending 'great hospital boat' to Greenland to 'take care of the sick' | US News | Sky News

I was wondering if it is a debt trap thing ?

The boat anchors up in a Fjord beside a remote town of 500 people, they ferry the people over, dodging the icebergs, a quick examination, a pack of lemsip, and boom, here is your bill. $250k. Can't pay ? Sign here...

Just as a point of interest. I spend many years living on an Island. Nowt like Greenland of course, but their health care did cover flights to the mainland if specialist stuff was needed. They even done the travel to the airport, and at the other end. All under their universal NHS thing. The patient paid nowt. And their partner/ carer went too if needed.

But Trump won't understand any of that I suppose.

Trump sending 'great hospital boat' to Greenland to 'take care of the sick'

The US president, who wants to acquire the semi-autonomous Danish territory, says a vessel is "on the way", though it is unclear if the help was requested.

But it's all fake news isn't it? Why isn't MSM making more of the fact that the US's 2 hospital ships are in dry dock in Alabama being refitted?

He just shuffles through his list of grievances and plops down on the next one to appear, like the feckin' Wheel of Fortune.

Are they being refitted because of the covid thing ?

I recall they were deployed to NY during covid, but they could not be used for covid, because their ventilation system actually spread it. I understood they were to be modified ?

Spandauer · 22/02/2026 13:20

Not sure about the Covid issue. Think it's primarily because they're pretty old now (built in 1970/80s) and need regular maintenance/repairs/updating.

One has been in dry dock since last summer (2025) and the other since Jan 2026 (I think)

Sending a refitted New Orleans river boat sounds like a recipe for more Americans to need rescuing and treating.

countrygirl99 · 22/02/2026 14:08

Would be more useful for Denmark to send a hospital ship for US citizens who can't get treatment. They could fill it with gynaecologists.

I was in one of his tacky casinos (taj mahal) when I was in the states on a J1. He had cardboard cut outs of the different Ms Universe contestants, absolutely terrible food and when you stepped outside the casino you were surrounded by homeless people and their tents

There is a reason billionaire Biff in the Back To The Future 2 was based on Trump.

They do have the "Bethesda-class expeditionary medical ships" on order. But my web won't allow me to find out if launched etc. I think they are being built.

Of course, if the Comfort and Mercy are in Mobile, then that explains it.

" Where are these ships?"

"Mobile Sir", the Admiral said with tears in his eyes.

"Well, as they are Mobile, send them to Greenland"

RedTagAlan · 22/02/2026 14:16

Denmark says no ?

Greenland doesn't need US hospital ship - Danish minister (rte.ie)

"The Greenlandic population receives the healthcare it needs. They receive it either in Greenland, or, if they require specialised treatment, they receive it in Denmark. So it's not as if there's a need for a special healthcare initiative in Greenland," Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen told Danish broadcaster DR."

"In Greenland as in Denmark access to healthcare is free. There are five regional hospitals across the vast Arctic island, with the Nuuk hospital serving patients from all over the territory."

Greenland does not need medical assistance from other countries, Denmark's defence minister said, after US President Donald Trump claimed he was sending a hospital ship to the autonomous Danish territory.

The powdered pangolin gives one terrible indigestion, so I have heard.

And no, that is not racist or xenophobic. Uncle Xi is a big fan of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The Healing Ship: Foreign TCM practitioners assist onboard Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy's hospital ship - CGTN

from that:

"The Peace Ark, the hospital ship of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy, has visited 52 countries over the past 15 years to provide humanitarian services. CGTN tracks one Chinese patient, and four foreign medics trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine aboard the Peace Ark to show how TCM has gone global."

I will never dismiss traditional Chinese medicine as I have first hand experience of its effectiveness in treating everyday conditions like headaches, stomach aches and fevers etc.

Additionally, many years ago, dh and I went on a tour of China. While there, we had the opportunity to be seem by a TCM practitioner. He told dh that he had a problem with his kidneys. Naturally we didn't take this info seriously.

A few years later dh was diagnosed with kidney cancer, which is symptomless. It just happened to be caught while being investigated for something else.

I am staying away from anything TCM. I think about the poor endangered animals :-)

Anyhow, this hospital ship thing is fascinating. Some quotes from Sky.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry reposted Mr Trump's message on X - and added: "Thank you, President [Trump]! Proud to work with you on this important issue!"

Thank you, President @realDonaldTrump! Proud to work with you on this important issue! https://t.co/YgzH85CiuA
— Jeff Landry (@JeffLandry) February 22, 2026

What is so important about it ?

Honestly. This guy is guvnor of a US State of 4.6 million. Is he not supposed to be clever ?

Just a quick think about it, minimum reading, no AI required. Five hospitals in Greenland ( 4 regional and the national one), means 1 hospital per 10k citizens. Add in Denmark, and I am pretty sure 10 minutes on the web would show the people of Greenland to have better healthcare than Louisianna per capita.

So what is "this important issue!"

I saw about the US submariner fella being moved , as a PP mentioned. And I am sure that is behind this. Has he been airlifted to the Nuuk hospital got some rare condition that the hospital is not able to instantly treat ?

Or is it just some massive fear of socialised medicine ?

"Denmark's prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, said in a Facebook post on Sunday that she was "happy to live in a country where there is free and equal access to health for all. Where it's not insurance and wealth that determine whether you get proper treatment"."

Then there is this:

"Aaja Chemnitz, one of the two Greenlandic politicians in the Danish parliament, wrote on Facebook: "Donald Trump wants to send a hospital ship to Greenland.

"It seems rather desperate, and does not contribute to the permanent and sustainable strengthening of the healthcare system that we need.""

Of course, everyone wants better healthcare.

But why is this an " important issue!" for the US electorate ?
