RIP Jessie Jackson

As I was reading about that, I was thinking how absurd it is in effect, that the USA, land of the free, should produce so many great human rights folk.

If we look at the bare bones of the work they have done for genuine universal suffrage, it is astounding that the US is going backwards in that regard.

What is the USA on any of the democracy ranking things ? It should be right at the top surely ? And has it dropped ? I know it depends on how it is scored and weighted, but top 5 at least ?

Such sites are blocked where I am.

Why is it absurd that a repressive nation should forge impressive resistance ?

Agree, some of the greatest thinkers and bravest souls come from the most repressed societies.

Land of the free? Not if you're poor or brown or a non Christian.

USA has been classed as a 'flawed democracy' since 2016 and currently ranks about 28th - 30th in the world.

EIU Democracy Index (2024-2025)

  • Ranking: 28th out of 167 nations.
  • Classification: "Flawed Democracy".
  • Context: The U.S. score has remained in the "flawed" category (below 8.0) since 2016, with significant concerns regarding political culture and polarization, though it maintains free and fair elections.

(To add context: France’s score fell just below the 8.00 threshold to qualify as a “full democracy” because of a decline in its score for functioning of government. Therefore, France was downgraded from a ‘full democracy’ to a “flawed democracy” in 2024 and ranked 26th and U.K. was ranked as "full democracy' with a score of 8.3 @ 17th.)

Ta very much.

On the subject of US democracy, this PRC state media article is maybe a sign of things to come under the Trump regime. I mean when all US media is like this :

China's democracy 'more extensive, genuine and effective' than US democracy: official - Global Times

I think we are already seeing a move towards this in the US ?

Has Trump made any comment yet on Canada's decision to source their munitions at home as much as possible, and not buy them from the USA?

One thing the Chinese have been saying for decades is that they are looking to an evolving democratic society. Obviously on their terms (and there is nothing contentious about that). Hence what was then is unlikely to be what will be when.

Incidentally, this is the same issue with their approach to energy. Yes, they did really lean into coal as a fuel. But even as they did that they said they wanted much greener electricity. And so - 20 years on - they are reducing fossil fuel reliance. And their economy is reflecting that. China is very happy to become the world leader in net zero.

Can you imagine the life skills that would get you hired to be Trump's shitpost ghost writer?

Sorry kids, your parent's voted for Trump so now you will have to do the work the deported immigrants used to do. School is woke anyway

Florida’s had rowed back rules to allow kids to do overnight work shifts

They seem to want to hollow out the middle class in favour of a wealthy billionaire class and serfs

The entire annual cycle of "the west" is built around farm labouring. Hence the summer holidays.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/02/2026 15:12

Yes, but most civilised Western nations have grown out of that phase of their development.

They don't go in all that much for the fine old tradition of burning witches, either.
