Apparently this 'discombobulation weapon' is something that he spoke about when we 'invaded' Venezuela. Apparently it 'discombobulates' all the systems and equipment of a country.

There is a thing called an 'EMP missile' that may or may not exist. Certainly the technology is being developed. EMPs disable electronics so it might very well 'make everything stop working'. IF the US has such a weapon and is keeping in under wraps, this is another incident of him letting the top secret cat out of the bag. He just seems to have a need for "I know something you don't know, nee-ner nee-ner neeee-nerrrrr!!!" in order to make him feel 'more specialer' than the rest of us.

I was told the big problem with EMP weapons is they would be quite hard, in the heat of the moment, to distinguish from a nuclear bomb going of since nuclear bombs also release an enormous electromagnetic pulse that knocks all communications out (in addition to immense destruction and loss of life but with comms down how can you quickly tell the difference). So a country suddenly hit with such a missile might well execute it's own protocols (or it's allies might) in response to a suspected nuclear attack and then the whole world is up shit creek without a paddle really.

Which makes them not the most responsible weapon even if technically feasible. Not that I would expect great responsibility from Trump and the gang.

EMP was known about in the 1960s. There was a detailed article in the early 1980s in the hobbiest magazine "Electronics Today International" which was the cover story. The TL;DR was that modern western electionics were much more vulnerable than older kit with valves (ask your great grandparents)..

However the science behind hardening kit against EMP is in the same area as protecting against extreme solar events. So a lot of military kit will be protected.

Civilian kit less so.

However if your aim is to incapacitate your enemy you don't need to spend untold billions on a supervillian wet dream. All you need to do is sneak a couple of shit updates into a software patch. We all know how easy it is to lose half the internet and major banking at the same time.

I did think, when Musk or possibly Vance was whittering on about a crusade and the need to Europe from itself "oh god, they're the fourth crusaders".
Because of course, the fall of Byzantium didn't start in 1453. Arguably it was set in motion with the sack of Byzantium by it's fellow Christian crusaders and the division of its lands amongst Italian interests which allowed the Ottoman empire to rise and eventually left the city of Byzantium isolated and unable to resist Mehmed II. Although that led in turn to the rise of Western European expansion and the British Empire and eventually the Ottoman empire collapsed and was divided up by those new European powers. And America in it's present form wouldn't have existed at all. History's odd and hard to predict.

I guess that would make "The West" the equivalent of the Christian lands with America as Rome and Europe as its Byzantium neighbour to the East. Hope not though.

I have heard tell, that there is a very extant prophecy in Islam, that everything will be wonderful when Rome falls.

As several historians have noted, this rather means that for the prophecy to come true (it is also widely believed that it hasn't yet 😀) then there must be a "Rome" that has yet to fall. Do they mean the EU ? Do they mean the descendants of Rome (the aforementioned self styled new Republic ?).

As with anything to do with religion, this is all total bollocks on the one hand. And would remain so if there weren't the credulous and the unscrupulous to direct them.

However that strain of historical reckoning also introduces us to the Rus - who were early descendants and who feel they also have a claim on what the Roman empire ruled. "Rus" ? Well you may not have heard of the tribe, but you will have heard of the country and empire they went on to found .... Russia.

Anything clicking into place now ?

When it comes to myths legends and religions, truth and historical accuracy are irrelevant. If it's what people believe, then it moves them.

(Incidentally there is a line of reasoning that makes King Charles III the latest emperor of Rome. But that's for another day).

Today's episode of the economist podcast has an interesting piece on the Epstein files (it's the first item in the podcast).

Check in the mail: our analysis of the Epstein correspondence
Our data journalists trawled through the vast email archive of Jeffrey Epstein, a dead sex offender. It is a revealing look at how and with whom he communicated.

The 'move on nothing to see here' cry from the Maga crowd must not ignore the Epstein files. Of course they will never listen to my sage advice.

So, the first meeting of the 'Board of Peace' is in DC this Thursday. And now apparently their remit is not simply Gaza, it's all 'global conflicts'. At the end, I am fully expecting the announcement of a 'Pax Americana' as Scrotus and his cronies solve ALL the world's problems peaceably and without armed intervention and angels will then fly out my arse.

I honestly think it’s much simpler. They just want to fight Muslims. And all they know is that the crusades was a time when we did that. And that’s pretty much all they know about it. So they move adopted the idea.

It’s why they are obsessed with the idea of Pre Vatican 2 Catholicism, the Pope being woke and wandering around dressed as the knights Templar.

Even Trad Caths pretty much only want to take us back to the 1950s not medieval Catholicism. I wonder how many will be doing a full medieval Lenten fast?

One Second After by William Forstchen is great fiction book on the after effects of an EMP attack. Part of a trilogy.

This is long overdue, Trump or no Trump.

I know it can be cheaper in the shortterm to buy services from a dominant large-scale provider, but it's rarely good in the longterm to have a duopoly of providers, or only two number of points of failure, or an element of critical national infrastructure controlled by another country.

Now that the UK is not in the EU, it doesn't completely solve things for us to belong to an EU payments system either; but at least it breaks the duopoly of Visa and Mastercard and hedge risks a little for us.
