Apologies. I did not know it was a child. I thought young man. And I did not think belly buttons was body shaming. But now I do.

Closer examination does suggest a young adult. In my haste I thought it was a child being held around the waist. So my apologies for rushing to pronouncement.

I am happy you called me out on body shaming though. So I will self ban from this thread for a while.

Apologies again for that.

Nooo. No self-ban necessary. Not in my books, anyway.

You've thought about it and apologised. Brew

Agree with @PerkingFaintly , no ban needed. We've all 'opened mouth, inserted foot' at one time or another.

We're a forgiving bunch here. Another thing that differentiates us from MAGAts.

Worth contemplating that there is no intrinsic law of nature that the US (a) should ever have achieved the prominence it has done and (b) that it should stay there.

That in it's waning years it accelerates its own demise is similarly not expressly counter to any natural law.

I do wonder what the possible equivalent to Byzantium would be, if we cast the US as Rome (as indeed, the US itself did) ?

This matters because Russias mythology is deeply entwined with the rise of Byzantium and it's fall in 1453.

As an aside was anyone else aware that the Punic wars only ended in 1985 ???😀

There is an alternate universe where DJT dies after meeting Truss and her role as a deep plant agent designed to bring down the far right is exposed.

For our US peeps and those who may be considering visiting the US, especially places where children congregate. More than one serious outbreak in the past few years has been tied to theme parks;

https://www.cnn.com/health/tracking-measles-cases-us-maps-vis?utm_source=cnn_Five+Things+for+Sunday%2C+February+15%2C+2026&utm_medium=email&bt_ee=0BGtsKoTqayN3EAysYijFvVQDmQQcjIevsKwWopgpSHt5G6Motm%2BDdISL1AWmOEx&bt_ts=1771164340389

Spiking measles numbers, thank you Scrotus, RFK, and anti-vaxxers. Measles cases were practically unheard of when my sons were children in the '80s-'90s. It was declared eradicated in the US in 2000. If I was the parent of school aged children, I'd be very concerned.

I'm old enough that I remember measles being a serious concern as the vaccine wasn't licensed here til 1963. I remember whole classes going down with them. I had both Rubeola which made me so deathly ill at 3 that I can still remember how ill I was, and Rubella luckily a mild-ish case at 9, both now preventable by vaccine. I have a niece who was affected due to her mum having Rubella in the 1st trimester.

Now a PSA; If you had measles you have life-long immunity. But if you were vaccinated the immunity can wane. So if you are concerned for yourself or your loved ones or if you are or plan to get pregnant, it's a simple blood test and a booster shot if you are not pregnant. If you are pregnant, you can't get the shot, but at least you'll know to be very careful.

Can't actually do any productive work but lives for rallies..."Former President Donald Trump held a campaign-style rally at Fort Bragg, urging soldiers to vote for Republican candidates." There's a Washington Post article but I couldn't find a gift link, but I did find a Grok summary and the article below. At this point I'm hoping the in-person exposure drives home how unfit he is to his audiences.

Grok: Here's a 10-point summary of the Washington Post article on Trump's Fort Bragg rally: 1. Event occurred on Feb. 13, 2026, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. 2. Trump entered to Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA,” mimicking his rally style. 3. He promoted GOP candidates, including for midterm elections. 4. Trump criticized his predecessor during the speech. 5. He urged the audience to "vote for us" (Republicans) in upcoming elections. 6. The speech concluded with the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.” 7. Army policy bans partisan displays at such military events. 8. Most service members avoided cheering to comply with regulations. 9. Trump boasted about a secret U.S. "discombobulator" weapon against adversaries. 10. The rally blended military address with campaign elements, drawing varied reactions.

"Trump boasted about a secret U.S. "discombobulator" weapon against adversaries."

Why on earth would anyone tell Trump about a secret weapon?

PerkingFaintly · 15/02/2026 19:30

"Discombobulator"? Is he talking about Musk and the US's information warfare against its allies?

(The stuff in the National Security Strategy about influencing European democracies to vote for Project 2025-approved parties.)

I think he's talking about himself. I've never seen anyone as discombobulated as he is.

Igotjelly · 15/02/2026 20:30

Discombobulated pretty accurately explains how I feel when he goes off on one of his tangents…

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/02/2026 21:06

I can't help wondering what the word was that he was groping for when he arrived at "discombobulator".

It reminds me of my mother, who was in no way senile in her forties but had what we called "the nouns disease" for the whole of her life, exclaiming peevishly, "Pass me the whoosis! Off the whatchacallit! Over there with the other ones...." (So we handed her the paring knife she wanted.)

Edited

Apparently this 'discombobulation weapon' is something that he spoke about when we 'invaded' Venezuela. Apparently it 'discombobulates' all the systems and equipment of a country.

There is a thing called an 'EMP missile' that may or may not exist. Certainly the technology is being developed. EMPs disable electronics so it might very well 'make everything stop working'. IF the US has such a weapon and is keeping in under wraps, this is another incident of him letting the top secret cat out of the bag. He just seems to have a need for "I know something you don't know, nee-ner nee-ner neeee-nerrrrr!!!" in order to make him feel 'more specialer' than the rest of us.

I did think, when Musk or possibly Vance was whittering on about a crusade and the need to Europe from itself "oh god, they're the fourth crusaders".
Because of course, the fall of Byzantium didn't start in 1453. Arguably it was set in motion with the sack of Byzantium by it's fellow Christian crusaders and the division of its lands amongst Italian interests which allowed the Ottoman empire to rise and eventually left the city of Byzantium isolated and unable to resist Mehmed II. Although that led in turn to the rise of Western European expansion and the British Empire and eventually the Ottoman empire collapsed and was divided up by those new European powers. And America in it's present form wouldn't have existed at all. History's odd and hard to predict.

I guess that would make "The West" the equivalent of the Christian lands with America as Rome and Europe as its Byzantium neighbour to the East. Hope not though.
