Tried it once ...... never again!!

Just caught a bit of the Winter Olympics on TV and was reminded of the one and only time I tried skiing. It was one of the worst and most terrifying experiences of my life and I will definitely not, never, ever be doing it again!!

Ditto, my only experience of scuba diving .... still having nightmares years later!!!!!

Both these activities are on my "Tried it once but never again" list. Anyone else got a Never Again experience?

Jumping out of a plane on my own. Looking back I'm pretty sure that if the shoot hadn't opened properly I would have struggled to sort it out. Never again

Wicker Man at Alton Towers. It was the first big ride I’d been on that day. And the last. It was so terrifying I didn’t open my eyes once until it was over.
Go Ape. Absolutely horrendous experience if you don’t like heights. Which I realised I didn’t, halfway round the ‘easy’ course. Other people’s kids were having meltdowns on the harder courses and were made to finish the course no matter what. Otherwise you’re just left dangling in mid air forever I think. Torturous.

A large ferris wheel at Disney california. It had cages , some swayed and some were static. It looked so innocuous as it swept slowly and majestically round. My son and I made the mistake of sitting in one of the swaying cages. Within a couple of minutes we both felt so nauseous and desperate to get off. It went round so slowly it was absolute torture!!

The Mickey fun wheel of death!

Most terrifying ride there

Ugh. Vague mental images of him grunting about the disbanding of the Monday Club mid-coitus and having a poster of Thatcher over his bed.

My mental image was of John Major - not quite so bad but still... disturbing.

During a visit to London we visited St Paul's Cathedral and decided to climb the hundreds of steps to the top of the dome.
Fine really, it was a spiral staircase which got steeper and tighter as we approached the top.
We then idiotically decided to climb to the golden gallery I think it's called on a see through metal spiral ladder thing that
Stuck out directly over the floor hundreds of feet down.
I have never been so scared in my life, started shaking and froze, convinced i was going to fall. Only problem was there was a queue of people behind us.
Keep going he said I can't I whimpered.
Eventually I had to move but my god I still have nightmares about it to this day.In fact it's turned into a recurring dream I have occasionally. Never again I said but stupidly agreed to visit the Eiffel Tower the following year.
We had paid to go to the top, but I escaped at the first stage and ran down the stairs on shaking legs, leaving the others gob smacked 🤣

The ice hotel, like camping but a million times worse as there is no getting comfortable and you get a certificate which says it all

Anal, never again

LSD. My ‘friend’ gave everyone a big dose of it. I got super paranoid, anxious, and couldn’t talk. Then everyone started melting before my eyes. Then my husband turned into the evil dwarf at the end of the film ‘Don’t Look Now’. I never saw him in the same way again and we divorced a few years later.

CluelessAboutBiology · 10/02/2026 00:40

@Inextremis you’re right about Dungeness.

@Nevereatcardboard I think you and I are the same person.

Bristol, or rather a particular hotel in Bristol.

Ski resort chair lifts. Tougnete II, I’m looking at you. Haven’t tried skiing, I’m too clumsy, too uncoordinated and too scared. I have however been to a ski resort as my friends were skiing and I went with them. Anyhoo, nearly died - sat on a chair lift whizzing down the mountain without the safety bar in place.

Riding pillion on a motorbike.

@saltandvinegarchipsticks I’ve read about the man died in Nutty Putty and it is the most horrific thing I ever read.

Anal sex. Once was enough (had to stop halfway, too)

White water rafting on the Nile.
I’ve always been into extreme sports but this one scared the life out of me. I got thrown out of the raft coming down a rapid and when I came up, the raft was over my head. I was only under it for a matter of seconds but it felt like a lifetime and I genuinely thought I would drown.

Was that in Jinja, Uganda? I've done that. Yep, not in a rush to go back. There are crocs there so count yourself lucky!

I'd erased this from my memory but the Cu Chi tunnels in Ho Chi Minh. Absolutely fucking terrifying. I had a panic attack half way round and our guide had to try and calm me down.

Also, raves. Got talked into going to one once. Unfortunately I don't like drugs, loud music or dancing 😂

Most of the things mentioned I wouldn't do anyway but yours reminded me of what started as an innocuously easy boat journey through caves in Laos and turned into a nightmare.

The caves were lit and unfortunately the flickering lights distorted sight lines and distorted what was a solid wall and what wasn't. About half way round I realised I was feeling very sick so stopped looking ahead but it was too late. I had to be helped off at the end, threw up, had a migraine that lasted for at least a day. Apparently it was caused by flicker vertigo.

Beddingchange · 10/02/2026 01:38

Emily in Paris.

Watched one episode and thought, I'm not wasting another second of my life on that tripe!

Each to their own!

CrocsNotDocs · 10/02/2026 01:47

A head massage. Thought it would be a blissful 60 minutes of massaging my scalp like they do at the hairdresser, but it felt like my hair was washed and rinsed 38 times with a bit of massage between washes.

Crwysmam · 10/02/2026 01:49

I suffer with thalassophobia ( fear of deep bodies of water), so scuba diving would be a no for me. I can cope with a bit of snorkelling as long as I can see the bottom. I blame Jaws.

I don’t mind skiing but ice skating is something I won’t be trying again. I went as a young teenager and can still remember clinging to the rail the whole time we were there.

My DH has always had motorbikes, I have ridden pillion once but in my mind I just don’t get how they stay upright and having seen so many accidents over the years I refuse to join him. It’s not his riding but the other road users that scare me. I do love the adrenaline rush of speed but with a bit more protection around me. I also couldn’t coordinate the leaning out bit.

Via ferranta

Via ferrata. I am fascinated. Where and how did it go?

Must be breathtakingly beautiful yet utterly terrifying.

Tried it once ...... never again!!
CastlesinSpain · 10/02/2026 02:02

Going to hairdressers.
Had a small chunk chopped off the top of my ear when I was about 13.
Tried again in my early 20s - had my hair permed - they left the stuff in too long and loads of my hair fell out - I don't think it ever properly recovered.
Risked it again at about 30 - highlights. Didn't realise it involved having a perforated swimming cap put on your head and the lumps of hair pulled through with a crochet hook - agony!
Never, ever again.

Whoframedrampantrabbit · 10/02/2026 02:12

Bungee jumping! So much more frightening than I thought it would be. Caveat: if cold have gone immediately after first jump, would have gone again, but in hindsight, WTF?! I’d also never do a night scuba dive again - found it claustrophobic, couldn’t see much and a bit scary - much prefer it in the day.

Ditto the Ring of Kerry

I knew I'd finally become an adult (at about 42) when I realized it was ok for me to say, I fucking hate skiing! It's terrifying, slippy and COLD!! I am still more than happy to come on the family ski trip, I'll just go along the hot tub, cold walks and drinks in front of the fire vibe.

Literally worst drug experience of my life. Took it with my bf of the time and our mutual good (f) friend. Ended with me sat in the bedroom wondering if I should jump out the window as it kind of felt like they were about to hook up. And then some random guy across the street was running around in his underpants (that actually did happen, it wasn't my fucked up imagination!) and all I could think was, sit in the dark and let it be over.

Funnily enough, the bf of the time and the mutual good friend ended up marrying 10 years later so I don't think that part was my imagination!

Getting on a horse. I was on it for about two minutes before it decided to throw me off. Never again - they're too tall, they have massive teeth and I don't trust them.
