Tried it once ...... never again!!

Just caught a bit of the Winter Olympics on TV and was reminded of the one and only time I tried skiing. It was one of the worst and most terrifying experiences of my life and I will definitely not, never, ever be doing it again!!

Ditto, my only experience of scuba diving .... still having nightmares years later!!!!!

Both these activities are on my "Tried it once but never again" list. Anyone else got a Never Again experience?

DH insisted on doing this in Alaska, I was petrified. Then to add insult to injury, he puked all down my back as we swooped through a national park. I was unsympathetic and turned the air blue, not realizing that everyone in the plane could hear me calling him a stupid fucker through their headphones. 😂

He also puked on a sea plane in the Maldives, but I’d planned ahead - gave him a bag ahead of time and pretended not to know him when he started blowing chunks.

I laughed out loud at this, that’s terrible😂

Dry suit diving - and I say this is an avid scuba diver.
Dry Suit diving involves the most uncomfortable suit - think having your neck and wrists zip tied to stop water leaks, carrying vast amounts of weight as the suits are so buoyant, and despite all the right and numerous layers I was still fucking freezing!
Dived Silfra in Iceland. I’ve decided that’s definitely a once in a lifetime dive as I will never ever do it again!

I hear ya. Never again. At Scapa Flow. Just kill me.

Scuba diving for sure. Went once in Egypt. Couldn't pop my ears while under, so it was very painful. The instructor missed my signals to go back up, so I didn't enjoy the experience one bit. Snorkeling wasn't great either.

I've broken my leg once. As I don't particularly care to repeat the experience, I don't feel the need to ever try skiing, snowboarding, or ice skating.

Go-karting outdoors when it's wet. I'd done indoor go-karting before and really enjoyed it. In the wet on slick tyres had me spinning more than a merry go round. We were booked to do two races. I finished the first (god only knows how many laps down) and bowed out for the second.

Going into the office for work. I got zero work done. I mean, Never Again.

TrickyD · 09/02/2026 18:55

Andouillette and bum sex.

Perfect Valentine celebration.

(not for me though)

Climbing the stairs inside the Sagreda Familia - very narrow, vertiginous and with no handrail. Like an Escher nightmare. Csme over all faint and had to descend very slowly.

When I'm descending in places like that I go backwards, facing the steps, it's much easier to control.

My contribution is hot air balloon rides, I did this in Egypt, one of the most boring hours of my life, no more exhilarating than standing by an open window!

Volunteering at an historic garden- the volunteers were sent off to weed a specific area, while the paid gardeners did interesting tasks elsewhere. No guidance, no check-in by the lead gardener. It rained and we were just left to it, when our 5 hours was up, we trudged in to the gardeners' shed and found the paid staff sitting cosy having a cuppa.
They must have been laughing up their sleeves at us mugs.
One of the long term volunteers said they were supposed to get training and experience with the paid staff, but she hadnt had a single session after 18 months.Only weeding, weeding, and more weeding.
One day was quite enough for me.

Caving . Worst day of my life :)

Ah, but it's so nice when it's over!
Honestly think that the mud-caked pub visits for a lovely warming whisky after a caving trip were why I kept squeezing through all those mud sumps & dried-out phreatic tubes. 😂

Just hated it. Skiing on the other hand, is a complete addiction!

I just know I would have loved ski-ing!

Sadly, I went parachute jumping before I ever got a chance to try ski-ing. The first jump was fantastic, so a few of us went up again for a second one.

The grass was damp on landing (evening dew) and one foot slipped sideways while I was concentrating on keeping my knees together as instructed. My knee hurt like mad, but I gathered up my parachute, walked what felt like miles back to the shed where all the gear was, then went to the pub with my mates.

Got out of the car when we got back to London and my knee just gave way and I fell onto my arse in the road. I strapped my knee up, took some codeine and went to bed. In the morning, as I undid the crepe bandage, my knee swelled up to the size of a small melon and hurt like hell.

I went to hospital, but refused to let them straighten my leg without knocking me out. They took me to the operating theatre to do just that, and when I came round, I was in a plaster cast from ankle to arse. I'd partially dislocated my kneecap and torn a cruciate ligament, was given a stern warning that it might never work properly again, and told I must never, ever try ski-ing or water ski-ing, and that they'd really prefer me not to do any more parachute jumping, either.

MrsJeanLuc · 09/02/2026 19:02

Skiing and scuba diving are on my list of "no force in hell" would get me doing it. Oh, add abseiling and caving to the list too.

Actually tried para-descending once (where you jump off a mountain and float down to the beach). I screamed blue murder the whole way down: the poor guy looking after me just took me down as fast as he could, overtaking all the others who were spiralling down enjoying the view.

Oh and quad-biking was pretty horrendous too.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 09/02/2026 19:02

Pilates: made me feel sick and gave me multiple trapped nerves for months.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 09/02/2026 19:03

I forgot the hell that is camping. Did it for DoE and vowed never, ever again. I'm a hotel person and the description of glamping up thread has made me very suspicious of that.

ladyamy · 09/02/2026 19:05

Horse riding.

Fighting Skinheads got a doing
Barbiturates very dangerous drugs
Heroin laced E..90s.

Marmalade71 · 09/02/2026 19:07

Most of these I’ve never even tried once because I’m a naturally cautious person and they’re all self evidently a bad idea.
However…

Dog sledding.
Terrifying, kept being thrown off when the sled hit rocks, Was holding on in terror while husky shit flew past my ears. Then got abandoned, with my elderly mum, for an hour by our guide while he took his lunch break. Thought we were about to give a polar bear his lunch.
Guide hadn’t even told us where he was going or when he’d be back.

Still traumatised decades later.

ladyamy · 09/02/2026 19:09

Paint balling.

Wellthisisdifficult · 09/02/2026 19:09

Go karting - it’s shit

Sorry but ‘husky shit flying past your ears’, so funny. It must have been terrifying though.

London Eye. Had to sit in the middle bit with my eyes closed. Pathetic.

Me too!!

Andouillette. Ordered by mistake in Paris. Smells like actual shit.

Sounds absolutely revolting.

Snowboarding!
What on earth possessed me, a woman in her late 50s to say yes to trying it, when I hate the cold, hated ski-ing as a teen, and have the balance and poise of a drunk spider...
DD1 booked me into a day long course at the local snow dome (she snowboards)
I strapped myself onto the board with a sense of impending doom.
It was not fun, not fun at all. My butt hurt, my pride was severely damaged and I have no desire to strap a plank of wood to my feet ever again! I lasted half the day and then happily bowed out to drink hot coffee and watch my daughter glide down the slopes.
Never again.

Not caving again either... shudders it was awful.
