Tried it once ...... never again!!

Just caught a bit of the Winter Olympics on TV and was reminded of the one and only time I tried skiing. It was one of the worst and most terrifying experiences of my life and I will definitely not, never, ever be doing it again!!

Ditto, my only experience of scuba diving .... still having nightmares years later!!!!!

Both these activities are on my "Tried it once but never again" list. Anyone else got a Never Again experience?

Why do so many pp hate Zumba? I used to love it! But, it isn't like a normal exercise class as you actually have to learn the dance routines. Once you've done that, it's great fun. I used to go twice a week for years and was really sad when the Local Authority shut down the classes. 😓

I tried acid in the late 70s - Red Star the little tablets were called. It was way too intense. The walls started breathing; I couldn't stop laughing; someone brought a giant ragged cabbage in from the garden which sat in the middle of the room and terrified me and then, to my later dismay, I took all my clothes off. It was awful.

This is epic.

emilysquest · 09/02/2026 18:20

I agree re acid (well, tried it a couple of times). I thought my body was completely transparent which was terrifying. Never again.

Go Ape. Terrifying

My worst nightmare

BlueEyedBogWitch · 09/02/2026 18:22

I’ve thought of another. Life drawing.

My regular art class offered a special short course in oils, so I signed up. I thought it was going to be still life, right up to the point I
picked my friend up on the way there and she had a yoga mat under her arm ‘for the model’.

I thought I’d be cool about it, but I wasn’t. It was just the most bizarre thing to be standing three feet away from a complete stranger, staring at his dick for two hours and working out how to draw his nipples. At one point I noticed he had a sweat rash under his bollocks. That isn’t something I felt I should know about a complete stranger.

Not for me. The painting never even made it into the house.

Climbing the stairs inside the Sagreda Familia - very narrow, vertiginous and with no handrail. Like an Escher nightmare. Csme over all faint and had to descend very slowly.

mattab · 09/02/2026 18:30

Cottage cheese

Trundlebus · 09/02/2026 18:30

Bell ringing (church bells you pull on a rope, not handbells!) as a teenager in a youth group. I thought would be a laugh and piss easy but turned out to be much much harder and heavier to pull on the ropes, and I was terrified of flying up into the roof! I pissed off the expert bellringers who were trying to coach us by ballsing up their sequence.

Surfing. Me and DH travelled around Central America a few years ago, and watching all the cool californian kids surfing and making it look so easy, we stupidly thought "oh, how hard can it even be?"
Well... it was brutal. The hardest thing ive ever tried to do. The board kept hitting me, I had massive lung fulls of salty water, and bruises ive never seen the like of. Ill never do it again. I wasn't cool. I was a snivelling drenched mess. And ill never do it again.

Climbing Crough Patrick!

Caving . Worst day of my life :)

That's another of my "never agains".

I went down a cave called Craig y Fynon (?sp) in the Brecons. It was only a few years after it had first been charted. There was a truly horrible bit where you had to wriggle through a narrow passage filled with rocks (a "boulder choke") for what felt like miles, which was pretty bloody awful, but the bit that really did for me was when we had to walk sideways on a narrow ledge through a long narrow gap. The rock wall curved into the gap, so you had your feet on one side of the gap and your shoulders on the other. And you couldn't see the bottom; it could have been 5' down or 500'.

I got vertigo and totally froze, and a lovely Geordie guy was really kind and calmed me down, then stood behind me and we traversed it together with me leaning back onto his chest.

I'd rather die than do that again.

LadyMacbethWasFierce · 09/02/2026 18:35

My 2 are both food related.

2 things I tried once and will never eat again. Interestingly both within the first year of marriage - 30 years ago.

Chicken livers. Had them in a restaurant and contracted campylobacter from them. I was so so ill. And the shakes and D and V went on for a couple of weeks.

And whelks. Tried one on the promenade in Bournemouth from one of those little sea food shacks. It slipped down the wrong way and became the perfect seal for my windpipe. I could not breath or utter a sound. I truly thought I was going to die. In the end I managed to put my fingers down my throat and yank it out!

Never eating either food again.

Yeah, I’d be really uncomfortable with that scenario too.

A big roller coaster. It hurt my neck and I was petrified and nauseous.

Yep. Space Mountain was the last one I will ever go on. Horrific.

landlordhell · 09/02/2026 18:37

Oh and oysters. Had them for the first time with my sister and we were horrendously ill for days.

I’ve got secondhand panic here just reading these horror stories.

Climbing Crough Patrick!

😂😂 Same! Just as bad going down as up!

MyDeftDuck · 09/02/2026 18:38

Ice skating! Bloody hated it! I’ve always had knee and hip problems causing extreme pain and my friend knew this BUT insisted I’d be ok on the ice because it was indoors??? Smooth??? And there was music playing??? WTF!
I suffered for weeks afterwards and yet he couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about!

ZenGarden89 · 09/02/2026 18:38

Dubai. A soulless chav fest. And that was in 2008.

StripedVase · 09/02/2026 18:42

God I want someone to have done Go Ape on acid

Gardenalia · 09/02/2026 18:42

Paintballing. Painful and terrifying

GrumpyButOk · 09/02/2026 18:42

Durian fruit. The saying goes that it "smells like hell, tastes like heaven".
It tastes exactly as it smells.

Topsy44 · 09/02/2026 17:30

I feel your pain. I get nausea just looking at those rides!

Glastonbury for me. Went a very long time ago in my 20s, was one of the very wet muddy years - I had an awful period together with awful period pain. Ended up losing my friends for a bit in the evening (was pre mobile phones). Couldn’t get near enough to any stages to see any acts and basically just a lot of pushing, shoving and feeling cold, wet and miserable. Just no.

I couldn't imagine anything worse than being at Glastonbury or any place with long queues for filthy toilets while coping with menstruation. And in the pouring rain.

Nikkidolphin · 09/02/2026 18:44

I’ll usually try things once and enjoy them but we swam in a cave once and to get out you had to dive down and swim under a ledge. I did it mostly because 2 teenagers were screaming, it was dark and it felt like I was in the middle of a horror film. I had to get out. Never again

You have my admiration. I went up one of the towers at Caernarfon Castle and ended up on my hands and knees while tourists strolled past me sniggering.
