Tried it once ...... never again!!

Just caught a bit of the Winter Olympics on TV and was reminded of the one and only time I tried skiing. It was one of the worst and most terrifying experiences of my life and I will definitely not, never, ever be doing it again!!

Ditto, my only experience of scuba diving .... still having nightmares years later!!!!!

Both these activities are on my "Tried it once but never again" list. Anyone else got a Never Again experience?

Big dipper/rollercoaster - I vomited afterwards, so not for me again.

PoliteSquid · 09/02/2026 14:04

A spin class!!! It was a beginners taster lesson… I couldn’t walk properly for days after!

ShodAndShadySenators · 09/02/2026 14:06

I did pot holing as a teen in a college trip to Wales. It pissed down all the way there and the caves were full of water in the form of deep ponds that you couldn't see the depth of. Alarming stuff. Plus the "envelope" thing a PP mentioned where you had to turn your head sideways to get through the gap, which seemed to be approximately half a mile long but was probably more like ten feet. I have a fear of deep water and, it turned out, I also greatly dislike tight spaces where you are aware of many many tons of rock above you and below you.

I have not chosen to partake again.

A flying lesson… I enjoyed it, but flying a plane is not for me.

A helicopter ride… DP and I did one in New York, we had the worst two seats, I ended up in a middle seat facing backwards. Rubbish. Would consider another if I could choose where to sit, but I don’t think that’s allowed.

I've never been skiing but it's always been on my bucket list. After this thread I don't think I'm going to bother 😂

I was actually quite disappointed with myself after our last skiing holiday as I was a nervous wreck and rubbish, yet it was probably the most beautiful part of the world I'd ever been and the most fantastic holiday in that sense.

I'm considering trying snowboarding instead and really persevering as I'd love to go back one day.

Lovemycat2023 · 09/02/2026 14:06

Is there a category for stupidly tried twice and never again? Skiing, Go-Ape, and running.

I felt the same (which is why I tried twice). Loved the landscape, spa, food and social side. Maybe next time I’ll go and just take a good book!

Tiddlywinkly · 09/02/2026 14:07

Snorkeling (I hate deep water)
Kayaking (the fear of rolling over)
Ice skating/roller skating (I hate feeling unbalanced)

Never been, but my idea of pure hell is pot holing/caving. Too many true horror stories

Shambles123 · 09/02/2026 14:09

Also skiing

ChocolateHobbit · 09/02/2026 14:09

For me:

Caving
Climbing/abseiling
Snorkelling
Jet skiing
Anything involving being underwater.

Funnily enough I have a licence to fly small aircraft and even though I love it, I also terrifies me so I understand that one.

Generally my biggest fears are claustrophobia/restriction of airways and loss of control which doesn't bode well with the things on my list. At least in a small powered plane I'm well strapped in and I can point it in the direction I want to go without crashing (hopefully) 😅.

Ice skating
Skydiving
Camembert
Zumba

Yes just go for the 'Apres-ski' !

Unfortunately the best views were up on the mountain. There were many occasions I was sat with a lovely hot chocolate admiring the view, then looking down the slope thinking 'Shit. That's the only way down'.

Unless there’s a ski lift for non skiers up and back down!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 09/02/2026 14:13

Spinning

Paperingoverthecrackers · 09/02/2026 14:15

Pot holing. Through a narrow low down hole. Couldn't go back as then the whole group would have had to return at the same time. Never again.

Rocknrollstar · 09/02/2026 14:16

Caving
Camping
Going on holiday with DS

Titsywoo · 09/02/2026 14:17

Scuba diving
Ghyll Scrambling in Lake District - fun but too scary for me!
Ice Skating - fractured my elbow when I last went 33 years ago

StrawberrySquash · 09/02/2026 14:18

Caving through a tiny hole that was just big enough to crawl through. While the river was high.

FindingMeno · 09/02/2026 14:18

I've bungee jumped, climbed, abseiled, skied, shot, kayaked, done assault courses, potholed, held a tarantula etc and actively enjoyed most of them.
My never again is rollerskating.
Bloody terrifying 😳

Pot holing/caving. Was made to go as a kid as part of a school trip despite telling the teachers I was feeling claustrophobic. (Good ol’ early 90s teaching!) Had a panic attack mid pot hole stuck behind another kid. Never, ever again. Ever.

Paint balling. Not terrifying or anything like that, just not very fun.

Not caving but exploring in a group the Roman sewers of Exeter. Tight fit and claustrophobic. Glad I did it. Never doing anything like it again.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 09/02/2026 14:19

The Great North Run. I managed it but it was the worst fucking day of my life. I hated every minute. I was so desperate that going through Jarrow there were some kids on bikes on the other side of the street and seriously considered mugging one for his bike to get to the finish line.

I actually thought that that’s what the thread was going to be about when I read the title. (I imagine that was just me bringing my personal feelings into the equation though).

Me too 🤣

I've clearly been on MN too long as I was reminded of all of the threads that go something like "DH pressuring me to try something new on his birthday" and a few pages and drip feed posts later it turns out that thing is anal.

Cycling tour around New York, the guide was a lunatic and definitely wanted us all dead!

A ditto around Amsterdam. Terrifying traffic, a million cyclists with no helmets going at 100 miles an hour, and horrible bikes where the pedals would move only when you were moving, so you couldn’t adjust pedals while waiting 10 seconds for a gap in the horrendous traffic.

Plus, one morning a friend of ours stepped out of the hotel and missed by a minute whisker colliding with a woman haring along on a bike - not only no helmet but a small baby in one arm!! 😱

Viviennemary · 09/02/2026 14:22

Camping in a tent. Dreadful.

Ive only been ski-ing once. And was quite good for a beginner which was surprising as I'm not usually great at sports.
