What aspect of 'normal' life is alien to you?

By which I mean... what are the "normal" things of life you haven't yet done or experienced, compared to most people?

For me it's:

Driving, I'm hopeless, just can't get it
I've never been to a club
Anything to do with babies
In-laws
A properly "senior" job

I don't watch soap operas or reality TV, and I have never watched Traitors. Does that count?

I realise that it makes me sound like a crashing snob, but I'm happy to own it 😁

Are we the same person? I could have wrote that list. Though I'm way too common to be a snob 😂

PurpleLovecats · 08/02/2026 23:48

Going to big multi person events willingly,

Admittedly I’m an extreme now as I do not leave the house but I cannot imagine enjoying an event like a concert, theatre, cinema, festival, circus.

All my life if I have managed to attend one I have had to sit at the back, by a door. I have to know I can leave within seconds, there cannot be any queuing. It has ruined graduations, weddings, school concerts etc.

I cannot imagine how amazing it must be to be able to do these things and enjoy them,

Films. You could count the full ones I’ve seen on your fingers.

Morepositivemum · 08/02/2026 23:57

Haven’t used chatgpt and haven’t bought off temu (not sure I want to do either, although every so often I’m tempted!) haven’t changed a tyre or put air in, haven’t tried gin or sushi!!

MrsAvocet · 08/02/2026 23:58

Enjoying having my hair cut. I see it as on a par with going to the dentist - a tedious and not particularly pleasant necessity to be done as infrequently as you can get away with and as quickly as possible.

Having a supportive/loving mother

This.
Plus managing to stay married or in a cohabiting relationship or indeed in any relationship. What on earth is that like? So long ago I have forgotten.
I don’t really mind, it just seems alien to me.

Sparklybutold · 09/02/2026 00:00

I don’t have a bio fam to fall back on.

TheDogsSmile · 09/02/2026 00:00

Having supportive/interested parents. My parents are awful and it was my decision to cut them, but I really envy people who have good parents.

Drinking coffee.

Putting photos of yourself and children online

Eating meat/animal products. It’s not that I judge people that do, I just find the idea of that people do it really strange.

Enjoying shopping. I like clothes and nice things but I don’t enjoy actually shopping for them. I’d like someone to be able to choose and try everything on for me.

I came to add similar. I cut and colour my own. I also dislike any kind of "pampering". A massage sounds like my idea of hell. And I can't imagine paying someone to give me a pedicure. Whenever I see videos of people sat in those chairs with someone sat at their feet on a little stool it makes me cringe.

Greycheck · 09/02/2026 00:06

Driving
Flying
Going abroad

Never done those

Pub life . I can’t grasp , can’t even grasp how much omen think it’s ok men do it all the time . Like , why would anyone want to spend £5 on a pint daily instead of going home to their family .
I also can’t grasp video game addicts , how can grown men and women have time to play for hours and be online talking with strangers . I always wonder how they have so much free time

Agree with this. Never seen the appeal of spending all day in the pub. Or video games.

I will add team sports. Probably just because I’m rubbish at them though.

Sharing photos of your life online. How weird to think people would be interested. Similar feelings about gender reveal parties.

Podcasts. Keep trying, cannot get on with them.

Matcha. It’s just horrible, surely.

Blanketenvy · 09/02/2026 00:08

Being married.
Having children
Being in generally good health
Exercising

RedSpottyMushrooms · 09/02/2026 00:12

Driving (although it seems like the majority of pps on this thread don't drive!)
Cooking/eating meat
Insta/X/Ticktock (I waste enough of my life on Mumsnet...)
All inclusive resort holidays

RosesAndHellebores · 09/02/2026 00:14

Sport - don't mind watching tennos
Shopping with other people
Being one of the girls

Chizzit · 09/02/2026 00:19

Skin care routines - I wash my face with water and occasionally moisturise and that is it. Maybe I'd look way better if I bought a load of products but I have never been able to shake the suspicion that it's all a con.

The idea that as a woman you can't leave the house without a face full of makeup and with hair done beautifully, even for a dog walk! (I know this isn't all women but it does seem to be quite a lot of those I know).

The idea that fashion choices might ever be more influenced by trends than by what you yourself already like (and yes, I have enough self-awareness to know I'm being influenced in all sorts of ways by the fashion industry - if only because I remember that big speech about it from the Devil Wears Prada - but still). I chose my style when I was aged 16 to 22 and I don't feel the need to change it 15 years down the line.

Cocaine as a casual part of socialising.

Family members watching stuff on tablets / separate screens rather than just each generation in the household getting their turn to control the TV or everyone being forced to compromise.

Listening to podcasts or youtube channels where non-experts pontificate about their 'insights' into various scientific or cultural topics.

Ted Talks. The style and format of Ted Talks and its soundbiteification of knowledge.

Wow I didn't realise I was so grumpy until this post opener my floodgates.

Thank you x

Being in a long term romantic relationship

Having babies / even knowing what to do with babies and children!?

Going travelling

elliejjtiny · 09/02/2026 00:31

Driving
Drinking alcohol (I have done it but hardly ever since I was about 20, I think I did 90% of my drinking between age 18 and 19.5)
I haven't been out in the evening just me and dh since before covid but I'm not sure that counts.

Naiveinthesematters · 09/02/2026 00:33

Being part of a family.

Brought up in care - then left to my own devices. Have never ever had a birthday or celebration with a family member other than my two children and I’ve now managed to mess that up.

Being married with kids, watching shows like the Traitors or Strictly and not having a dog.

This is me too

Crushed23 · 09/02/2026 00:49

-Never been a bridesmaid.
-Never been on a hen do.
-Don’t do big family Christmases.
-Never been on a package holiday / all inclusive.
-Don’t keep a budget, just have a rough idea of what I can spend.
-Never subjugated myself to a man for the sake of a relationship (seems to be quite common on MN).
