What aspect of 'normal' life is alien to you?

PurpleSky300 · 08/02/2026 22:14

By which I mean... what are the "normal" things of life you haven't yet done or experienced, compared to most people?

For me it's:

Driving, I'm hopeless, just can't get it
I've never been to a club
Anything to do with babies
In-laws
A properly "senior" job

Daughter or direct debit?

Direct debit definitely not a Daughter.
Sorry for the confusion👍😁

MassiveOvaryaction · 09/02/2026 06:51

Going to the hairdresser. I have done it but not for literal years. Hate it.

Manicure/pedicure. Just can't stand the thought of someone fiddling about with my hands/feet.

Likeoohlaalaala · 09/02/2026 06:52

Getting nails done, can't grasp it and looking at people's painted nails makes me feel a bit sick

Tik Tok and Twitter/X

Having a career, I still don't know what I do or what I want to do and I'm 44

Children

I have to pay for so many things with online banking these days. How do you manage without?

This used to be me, I just used PayPal to pay for things ir transfer money and had paper statements. Used the phone to speak to the bank if something needed sorting.

Thankfully I've embraced online banking now

IDontHateRainbows · 09/02/2026 06:54

Having a tidy house
Having friends round to said house (embarrassed at all the clutter)
Having a car that's not an old banger

Edited

Haha I agree with the car also. Why spend all that money on something that gets you from A to B? I don't understand how the money spent can translate into pleasure. I'd rather stick it in my shit pension pot

The school run. I’ve got two children but I’m also a FT teacher so I’ve never done the school run, dh has always done it.

BagthorpeSaga · 09/02/2026 06:59

Cooking - I’m 57 and I’ve probably cooked about 5 meals in my life - I’m the ‘queen of picky bits’ !

ChaToilLeam · 09/02/2026 06:59

reality TV
watching sports
beauty treatments
having children

driving

I don't "get" any of these!

Buttheywereonlysatellites51 · 09/02/2026 07:01

Watching, playing or talking about sport
Going on a beach holiday (can't sit in the sun, burn after half an hour)

Rosepinky · 09/02/2026 07:02

Being married/living with a partner
Driving
having even one emotionally mature parents you can talk to anytime
Pet ownership
having one main friendship group - I typically hang out 1 on 1 with friends or sometimes with 2 of them but I don’t have a core friendship group.

ClawsandEffect · 09/02/2026 07:02

Being in large groups of people. I think I used to enjoy it, pre-covid, when I was younger. But now it makes me anxious and shaky. I don't mind as much if I'm alone and don't have to be part of a group. But shared activities are alien and distressing.

Gotmyoldshoeson · 09/02/2026 07:05

Having a band I’m a fan of.
Enjoying gigs or live music
Enjoying watching ( or playing) team sports
knowing, or caring, what make a car is.
Going on a holiday with ‘the girls’. The thought of this fills me with dread, so I’ve always politely declined.

Gotmyoldshoeson · 09/02/2026 07:09

And going on a spa day. Just not my thing.
Straightening my hair.
getting nails done.

JennyWrenSeven · 09/02/2026 07:10

Going to the gym!

Daughter or direct debit?

Was about to ask the same! If direct debit you can’t buy something online with a direct debit and if daughter well as someone who spent a lot of years being her mothers pa then you are being disingenuous to say you don’t do online shopping, you are getting some other mug person to do it.

Parents, sorry for that, mine were the same.

BeanQuisine · 09/02/2026 07:18

Swimming, jogging, going to gyms.
Going to beauticians, nail bars etc.
Eating breakfast cereals. Drinking "energy drinks".
Eating McDonald's and the other US chains.
Watching most modern TV shows - they're not for me.
Reading articles about the so-called royals.
Sitting on a banana lounge in a bikini next to a swimming pool - never done it, never fancied doing it.

Pricelessadvice · 09/02/2026 07:18

Relationships and children.
I find being in a relationship the most alien, suffocating thing. When I’ve been in a relationship, I’ve spent most of it trying to work out how to avoid seeing them 😅
Getting nails done.
Going to the gym.
Pyjama days. Yuk. Let me out the house and into the fresh air.

LlynTegid · 09/02/2026 07:18

I have never read any of the Harry Potter books or seen any of the films. Even though I agree with JP Rowling standing up for women's safety and have met Daniel Radcliffe.

localnotail · 09/02/2026 07:19

Amazing how many people do not drive. I assume not everyone lives in London? How tf do you get around? When I used to live in a small town I did not like driving much but had a car as I hated being reliant on other people to taxi me around. It also gave me better career opportunities as I could drive to another town to work. Car, to me, is freedom! Don't need to own it in London but still would rent one if I needed to.

Wincarnis · 09/02/2026 07:21

Going to the gym
Having a massage
wearing a bikini
having a happy family
summer holidays

Elsvieta · 09/02/2026 07:22

Having siblings - don't understand that relationship at all.

Not being shy / socially anxious all the time and putting a lot of effort into avoiding social situations.

Not reading books.

NotMyRealAccount · 09/02/2026 07:27

Video games.
Skin care beyond soap, cheap moisturiser and sunscreen. It's a layer of complexity my life doesn't need. Likewise make-up.
Going on cruises.

DeluluTaylor · 09/02/2026 07:31

Liking something ‘a little bit’ not developing a full on obsession.
Having money for the last three weeks of the month. Just having £200/600 whenever. My mind boggles at that.
Being anxious about everyday things.
Not wanting to explore the world e.g. eating at the same restaurant or going to the same place on holiday each year.
Needing to be in a relationship.
Finding people boring. Most people have some thing interesting about them, you just have to find it, find out what they are passionate about.
