What aspect of 'normal' life is alien to you?

PurpleSky300 · 08/02/2026 22:14

By which I mean... what are the "normal" things of life you haven't yet done or experienced, compared to most people?

For me it's:

Driving, I'm hopeless, just can't get it
I've never been to a club
Anything to do with babies
In-laws
A properly "senior" job

Understanding directions and having a good sense of the way to go. Feels like my life would be inexorably easier if I had a basic sense of direction.
Spending holidays sitting in the sun by a pool or on the beach. Hate the heat and find sunbathing boring.
Having hand and eye coordination and basic spatial awareness so I’m not always dropping/spilling things or walking into things.
Having had a holiday with a large group of girls - fills me with dread.

ThatAgileLimeCat · 09/02/2026 07:46

Dinner parties

Decorating/house repairs. Don't understand how people visualise a new plan for a room, plan the work then do some or all of it themselves.....it is like witchcraft to me

Good hosting

Fashion

Eating meat.

JennyWrenSeven · 09/02/2026 07:47

Socialising, going to any event, opening of an envelope, etc

I worked with someone who was a social butterfly and it exhausted me even talking about it. I just don’t know how she and others manage it.

I potter into town and go out when I feel like but I hate arranged outings. Possibly an age thing now with me.

Gardenalia · 09/02/2026 07:51

Discussing intimate matters with anyone
Being financially dependent on anyone
Pubs
Home deliveries from supermarkets
TV adverts - only watch BBC now, all other channels drive me crazy
Gambling of any sort
Restaurant food - this makes me very sad, but unless food is cooked fresh from scratch, it makes me vomit 😔
Family strife - none of my family is perfect, but we’ve never fallen out, we just leave each other be

EdithBond · 09/02/2026 07:53

Online shopping
WhatsApp

Cerialkiller · 09/02/2026 07:55

It's a looong list.

Drinking culture. I've had a couple but never been hungover, vomited or blind drunk.

Having a group of girlfriends. I have friends but they mostly don't know each other.

Agree re reality TV/soaps. I have better/more interesting things to do then watch that stuff (it's mainly the amount of time it wastes). I am about to buy a month of netflix just to watch season 4 of Bridgerton so maybe I'm a big hypocrite!

Been thin/never thinking about food.

Liking/wanting to travel/see the world. I've been abroad and it's perfectly nice but id be quite content staying at home.

Never had my hair professionally coloured or treated beyond a basic cut. Ditto nails. Never done them. Don't see the appeal, in fact they look awful to me. I work with my hands a lot, crafting and art and the thought of long nails or even nails that I just need to look after doesn't appeal. The long claw nails that I've seen recently make me physically uncomfortable!

LBFseBrom · 09/02/2026 07:55

Taking pleasure in sport.
Feeling the need to do housework.

drspouse · 09/02/2026 07:58

Package holidays - especially AI.

Eastie77Returns · 09/02/2026 07:58

I’ve thought of a few more

Not travelling abroad. When I meet adults who don’t have a passport and have never left the country my mind is blown.

Relying on a DH/DP for money.

Camping and holidays in a caravan.

Also not driving. If you have DC then I think both parents should be able to drive in case of an emergency (I know this is an unpopular opinion on MN) and it’s an unfair burden on the driver. My non-driving friend, her husband and young DC attended a wedding hundreds of miles away. He fell ill and couldn’t drive home and they were stuck in a hotel for a couple of days waiting for him to recover.

I don't watch soap operas or reality TV, and I have never watched Traitors. Does that count?

I realise that it makes me sound like a crashing snob, but I'm happy to own it 😁

Me neither. or anything involving cooking.

blackheartsgirl · 09/02/2026 08:02

I have no biological/extended family or dh. They’re all dead or just never existing the first place. So people spending time, going to see their parents, having their sister etc over, bumped into a cousin blah blah nope it doesn’t happen for me.

social events like a club event or party are an absolute nightmare as I literally sit there on my own, it’s embarrassing. I try and avoid.

going on holiday abroad as an adult, never done it, never will. Not that I don’t want to, I do, have no one to enjoy it with and I’m broke!

whatisforteamum · 09/02/2026 08:04

Watching sport.
Why.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 09/02/2026 08:07

Any sport ( except I like watching ice skating)
Any alcohol, except Baileys at Xmas.
Being an early bird.
Not feeling hungry 🫩 (unless ill when that aspect is a blessed relief)

genesis92 · 09/02/2026 08:11

Harry Potter.

LazySusannes · 09/02/2026 08:14

Going to the cinema

I find the sound too loud and it hurts my ears.

I stopped going about 10 years ago.

Caterpillargirl23 · 09/02/2026 08:14

Having my photograph taken without a slight panic.

dottiedodah · 09/02/2026 08:15

Fivetriangulartrees I drive but didnt pass my test until I was 32.I can drive locally ,less keen on long journeys and heavy traffic. 3 times on MW.Also never driven abroad or in London.I just couldnt imagine driving across Europe .We met a chap who drove to Spain and enjoyed it! Never worked FT after DC and became a SAHM for many years. Never managed Tampons either !

godmum56 · 09/02/2026 08:16

sport. Any sport, watching it or taking part
swimming running bike riding
using makeup
soaps on tv
reality TV
following fashion
going to live gigs
foreign holidays
feeling lonely. While I miss particular beloved people, I have never in my life felt loneliness that can be assuaged by being more social or the general company of strangers.

HoldingTheDoor · 09/02/2026 08:21

localnotail · 09/02/2026 07:19

Amazing how many people do not drive. I assume not everyone lives in London? How tf do you get around? When I used to live in a small town I did not like driving much but had a car as I hated being reliant on other people to taxi me around. It also gave me better career opportunities as I could drive to another town to work. Car, to me, is freedom! Don't need to own it in London but still would rent one if I needed to.

I’m not in London and I live five minutes from a train station that’s one stop away from one of the larger UK cities and there are 5 buses also within 5 minutes that will take me the 15-20 minutes there.

I’ve never understood the idea that everyone should drive. Driving should be a privilege not a right and there are far too many bad, careless and inconsiderate drivers on the road as it is. I’m not convinced that we need more of them.

1980isitjustme · 09/02/2026 08:21

Dancing. I’ve always been way too self conscious and it makes me sad that I have missed out.

TheGoddessAthena · 09/02/2026 08:22

Buying shite from Shein or Temu.

Nannyfannybanny · 09/02/2026 08:23

Don't watch soaps, nope never seen Traitors, Love Island, Goggle Box..I don't do online, phone banking.. before I retired,we had a bloke from the Fraud Squad giving us a lecture (mainly to do with Patient confidentiality) he said he could find any of our passwords and hack our accounts in 10 minutes and not to do it) eaten or cooked a steak.. smoked.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 09/02/2026 08:26

What a depressing thread.

LoveWine123 · 09/02/2026 08:27

Sports, beer, watching reality TV, getting drunk on a regular basis, adult gaming, men with families going to the pub or gym after work most day

tweetysylvester · 09/02/2026 08:28

Self love, feeling confident and relaxed in yourself.
Not waking up with a sense of dread and loss...
Being understood and having someone truly on your side.
Having a "regular" childhood or one you could happily look back on.

More lighthearted ones:
Having a car or wanting to have one.
Finding influencers truly inspiring.
Dreaming of having a large family.
Being really interested in nail care and manicures.
Bike riding culture (and any sports devotion, really)
