To NOT like the evenings stretching...

I absolutely adore the dark nights and love it when the clocks go back in October, love driving home from work in the dark. Love lying in bed all cozy at 7pm looking up at the big, bright moon. Love being at home in the warm or going for a night walk and looking at everyone's Halloween decorations.

I don't like the lighter evenings! I find it harder to sleep, feel like I should be doing more or that everyone is doing something sociable and interesting. All the twats come out getting drunk in their gardens or blasting their shit music out and motorbikes revving about everywhere.

Fuck the light evenings... leave me in the winter!

Why not just live in the moment and stop dreading things that are several weeks away yet

ImPamDoove · 08/02/2026 11:30

I love the coziness of winter too, but the long languid evenings of summer are so lovely. Having dinners outside, which we did for weeks on end last summer, lighting the outdoor stove when it’s a bit cooler - heaven.

Snowyowl99 · 08/02/2026 11:31

Totally agree...I love the autumn n winter. The feeling of being sheltered , the deep silence. I hate the coming of spring it's such a bland month. I await September to see the blanket of darkness coming down. ..cosy house, glow of candles, so much more atmospheric
Not for everyone I know !

CrystalsFormingOnTheTop · 08/02/2026 11:42

I agree OP. I get so depressed when the nights start getting lighter. I noticed it by mid January and I was already wishing the year away so I can have my dark, cosy days/nights back.

The only thing I enjoy about spring/summer is that the dog walks are significantly less wet and muddy!

I was born at midsummer and am a summer hater so definitely not following that trend.

Husband is early winter and very much a summer lover. I am in the depths of winter and prefer autumn but have appreciation for all seasons.

Definitely not a birthday thing. Just a personal thing.

What is it with the mumsnet obsession with feeling claustrophobic being "cosy"?

It has been brighter today and dry for the first time in ages, so I went out for a walk and came back feeling energised and motivated.

I walk the dog in all weather and it's always energising. I was on the beach yesterday in driving wind and rain and still enjoying it. And appreciated getting home and into dry clothes even more than if it hadn't been raining. I don't love it raining do much but I don't particularly object to it either.

RampantIvy · 08/02/2026 12:46

Yes, a walk alwsys energises me, but I just don't get any pleasure from walking in driving rain.

WhineAndWine1 · 08/02/2026 13:07

God no. I hate living in Scotland during October to a Feb is just dark all the bloody time. Bring on it still being light at 9:30 in the evening

I have a collie. Today was lovely to not have freezing cold heavy rain hitting me in the face while I walked.

Every day, twice a day, regardless of the weather because...collie.

I love walking and being outside. I also love being warm and cosy. Two things can be true and I tend to go with my mood on the day. Which may or may not be influenced by the weather.

What do you do in the driving rain? Stay inside in the warm being cosy?

igelkott2026 · 08/02/2026 15:47

I agree about the noise in the summer, people are insufferable. They don't seem to think they are having a good time if they are not drunk, shouting and making sure the entire street can hear their party.

And then you have the screamy girls with their mates round after school. Why do little girls scream so much? I'm sure I didn't.

But otherwise you are U OP. Dark nights are dangerous on so many levels. The more light we have the better.

igelkott2026 · 08/02/2026 15:50

I was born in March and like the spring. Summer can be too hot for me but nice days in the spring are a pleasant temperature.

In the warm in a light airy room with the big light on, but not snuggled up under a blanket drinking hot chocolate.

I think, for me, cosy conjures up images of small dark rooms, blankets and open fires, and that isn't me at all.

Fodencat · 08/02/2026 15:58

In with you OP. As soon as the evenings inch into staying lighter for longer I feel despair. The bomp bomp bomp of a football. Kids screaming and slapping up and down. Our fence being whacked. I won’t feel better until October x

Chucking it down here. Big light on in my bright, airy living room, winter Olympics on the TV, dog on lap (I'm not allowed the blanket, child steals it or dog chews or) with a cuppa tea and a roast dinner cooking.

Properly cosy but not dark or small (aside from the fact my house is small, but the rooms are decent sizes we just don't have many of them).

Walked the dog this morning before the rain started for the thousandth day in a row and enjoyed the fact that the icy water wasn't smacking me in the face while I did it for the first time in 2026. Went out with the family. Now enjoying some cosy time.

It can be both.

Such a shame that half of your year is miserable! There's nothing you can do about lighter evenings but you can do something about the things that bother you

ShamedBySiri · 08/02/2026 16:48

I absolutely hate the dark evenings and mornings, going to work in the dark, working in a windowless environment and coming home in the dark. Compounded by this endless rain. I’ve had a couple of truly horrific journeys home with rain so heavy I could hardly see the road and was driving at 20mph (on a normally fast road).
Someone told me on Friday we had had 39 days of rain, today makes 41.
I did a bit of gardening this morning, mainly cutting back dead foliage and planting out a couple of things. Then the rain got too much. I made a coffee and sat in the plastic greenhouse we got from Amazon which has protected my beloved Camellia nicely, eating chocolate digestives, drinking coffee and contemplating the first bloom in the camellia.
Just now I went out to the car for something and behold - the sun is shining in the west, the birds are singing and I feel slightly cheered by the prospect of spring. (There are quite a few buds out of shot on the camellia).

To NOT like the evenings stretching...

What's stopping you from reading, painting or doing jigsaws outside under a shady umbrella?

Dark lovers just need to invest in blackout blinds all around the house.

As I said, when it's sunny, I feel obliged to be more active. But yes, when it's really too hot, I sit in the shade and read etc.

Obliged by whom?

I wonder if part of it is feeling uncomfortable in the heat, the clothes, the skin exposure, and also feeling like people go out and do stuff and you just sit at home.

the hot chocolate obsession always surprises me. How many gallons are folks drinking that it’s such a big deal;
