What automatically makes you think people are idiots?

For me it’s:

people who think that Michael Jackson isn’t a pedophile.

people who say things like “Londanistan” “Bradfordistan”

People who say “If the Holocaust is real, why do the tattoo numbers only go up to 5 digits”

But some conspiracies have turned out to be true?

Most people will declare "Conspiracy theories and the people who believe in them are so clearly stupid" without actually thinking about what they're saying.

People who believe that Finland doesn't really exist, the royals are actually lizards in disguise and birds are battery drones that charge themselves by sitting on telegraph wires - are they stupid? Most probably, yes.

People who question the official conclusion of David Kelly's death, believe that some powerful people are monsters who have done the vilest things and blackmail/cover for each other or wonder if it might possibly have been any more than coincidence that Diana declared that 'they' were going to kill her in a car crash, and then she died in a car crash in bizarre circumstances - are they all automatically stupid? I'm far from convinced.

Was the post office scandal covered up through a conspiracy lasting years - probably also smearing and gaslighting the victims who raised the alarm as 'conspiracy theorists'? Are judges and the police all stupid conspiracy theorists every time they arrest and then often later convict people of 'conspiracy to X'? Do people genuinely think that groups of people never get together to secretly make nefarious/criminal/dishonourable plans? That's all the word 'conspiracy' actually means.

You also tend to find that the same people who will scoff at the idea that western governments could ever be involved in conspiracies and cover-ups will confidently assert that Russia, China, North Korea, Iran and others ARE definitely involved in conspiracies and cover-ups in pretty much everything that they ever do!

I hadn't thought of that...

Agree with you both wholeheartedly. Thank you for expanding on my point ☺️

People who say “we was” instead of “we were”

and

”I done” instead of “I did”

and people who refer to “myself”

otherwise
people who know nothing about current affairs
people who think being an influencer is spending to aspire to

Lefties on Mumsnet that get aggressive when someone has a different opinion.

Huge inflated lips and face full of filler.

People that virtue signal on social media.

Ooh you've reminded me, people who use the generic term 'lefties' without understanding theres a difference between a red flag and a rainbow one.

lifeturnsonadime · 06/02/2026 11:09

Anyone who doesn't see that so called 'trans rights' is a gift to the patriarchy.

Especially educated women who are not impacted by the loss of women's rights that 'trans rights' relies on and call women who are intelligent enough to understand and fight this bigots/transphobes.

There is a difference but they can and often combine - e. g Ash Sarkar.

Anyone living in and enjoying the benefits of any liberal, western democracy who claims to be a Marxist is an idiot.

Thinking someone is an idiot because of their political beliefs is not what makes me think the person lacks intelligence. I think a person lacks intelligence when they use the term 'leftie' as a lazy umbrella label for anyone who holds political views they disagree with. If they are unaware there's a difference between wanting to reduce class and wealth inequality and their stereotype of a blue haired student, marching around with a rainbow lanyard calling people bigots, and use 'leftie' as a one size fits all insult, they're not the sharpest tool in the shed.

If the person wanting to reduce class and wealth inequality is doing so under a Marxist or Communist label I have no respect for them regardless of the colour of their hair or their lanyard. It's an evil doctrine which has failed everywhere it's been tried.

Not suggesting you personally but equally anyone who uses the term "fascist" for everyone right of centre. Anyone who uses "fash" doubly so.

Right. So if you wanted to express that, the intelligent way to do so would be to say "I think Marxist/Communists are idiots" so it was clear who you were referring to.
Using the lazy pejorative 'leftie' suggests the speaker sees no difference between their blue haired protester stereotype and my 80 year old Uncle Albert and his fellow ex miners down at the Labour club. Which isn't very intelligent.

I didn't actually use the term. I was pointing out "leftie" can include the red flag and the rainbow flag.

You might be surprised by the people on the left wing who describe themselves as a "leftie"
Here's one or Andrew Marr.

I know left wing people use the term 'leftie' about themselves. However, not usually in the context that imo opinion indicates idiocy. Such as to insult anyone who suggest that there can be good reason why a person is on benefits. Or who doesn't think immigration is the source of all ills. Or who criticises Farage, or Trump, or ICE. Or as an accusation when there's a heinous act that an immigrant can't be blamed for (because its always either an immigrant or 'a leftie' with these types).

Why on earth do you not believe that poster? Is it only people who think Brexit Leave voters are idiots that you believe? Are people not allowed to think people who voted for Brexit are not stupid? What a narrow-minded view!

Yes, some posters were using the laughing emoji to be cruel, and this is why it was axed. It doesn't need to come back. If they DO ever bring it back, they should make it visible to everyone, so other posters can see when someone is being a twat and a bully.

It's an emoji. If emojis offend you, I'm not sure the internet is for you.

Baggingarea · 06/02/2026 13:21

You know when you start crossing the road, then notice a car coming so do a little awkward jog and wave thanks when they slow down?

There is a breed of person (usually young men) who will walk defiantly slowly and make the car wait for them.

Like ooo ur so hard, Id better not mow you down then. Idiots!

If you think it's fine to use an emoji to mock, which many were doing, then I suspect you're not exactly a sparkling enhancement to online discourse yourself.

I saw something hilarious online which was a meeting for the flat earth society which said they had meetings “all around the globe”.

could be an urban myth but it made me laugh

Now I've read that I'm hoping it's real, too funny! 😄

You're right, of course. Emojis are only for serious busines, as follows.

"Sadly, after a long life, John took his last breath and passed away this evening 💀👻⚰️🥀🧟‍♀️"
"Unfortunately, the tests have come back and it's a serious condition 😷🤮🤒💉🦠"
"Regrettably, the company has folded into bankruptcy and you will all lose your jobs effective immediately, and we cannot pay you 📉💸💼☠️🤑❌".

How dare anyone use emojis for fun?!

Avantiagain · 06/02/2026 13:59

The person in my extended family who voted Brexit to 'get the Asians out'. Racist and thick.
