Which direction does you garden face? I might try them in the front garden this year as they definitely didn't approve of the back garden.

Maybe that is the secret as they only grow in our front garden too.

Front garden is mostly south facing with lots of light.

Please tell me the secret - do they only like you if you’re Dutch?

Possibly. I have them too. They run riot and need tight control. It is surely not a coincidence that the two cloggies on this thread have rampant sweet peas.

I am also really looking forward to the speed skating.

LittleBowSheep · 29/01/2026 10:23

I've had quite a lot of success with sweet peas but I grow them indoors from seed. I've not tried sowing direct outside. Is that what everyone means by having no luck with them?

I tried direct sowing. Will try your way this time.

We have sweetpeas (my dad gave us some seed many years ago) and they grow everywhere now. Luckily my neighbour loves that they are in her garden now

Yes my sweetpeas grow well and there's a couple already that have amazingly survived the frost and snow.

They have very long roots so I sow them in toilet roll insides. Saves having to transplant them into something bigger later.

BIossomtoes · 29/01/2026 10:33

Maybe I’ll have a go this year. Our garden faces SW, they might like it. I’ve never tried because I figured if my granny couldn’t grow them I have no chance.

placemats · 29/01/2026 10:34

I was going to tidy up this planter but didn't want to disturb the sweetpeas.

I do that as well.

countrygirl99 · 29/01/2026 10:50

IME sweatpeas are slug food. I have tried several times , including starting them in pots. But the next time I look after planting them out there's a half inch of stalk and the rest has been eaten. Rarely takes more than 24 hours.

SerendipityJane · 29/01/2026 11:49

Another fucking (Labour) disgrace for people to fill their boots with.

@SerendipityJane disgusting. Country is going to the dogs isn't it.
I'm sure someone will come along to explain it's only because people have stopped bothering to report murders.

I see another Reform racist slipped through Farage's "vetting". What is it about Reform that attracts these people?

I am sure the Brexiteers will be happy 😊 This is the sort of thing they wanted, wasn't it?

Some of that would have made Bernard blush.

More positive business/economy news. New business in last quarter up 10% on previous quarter.

From the Guardian

Lucy Powell, Labour’s deputy leader, has said the party’s candidate in the Gorton and Denton byelection will be one of “two good local candidates who will be outstanding members of parliament for this area”.

The final two on Labour’s shortlist are Manchester councillor Angeliki Stogia, and Eamon O’Brien, who leads Bury Council in Greater Manchester. Members are due to choose the candidate after a hustings, with the result expected on Saturday afternoon

But that can’t be true - there are lay offs and businesses going bust at a rate of knots. Or so we’re told.

Listened to World at One, Radio 4 earlier and those speaking about it were incredibly positive. Great news!

Yes, it's being derided by some. So predictable.
