Things you'd forgotten about

String art.

Remember those pictures that hung on walls in the 70s/80s (? I'm guessing)
They usually had a black background and coloured string making geometric type patterns.
I had totally forgotten (most probably for the best 😂) that they had ever existed until I looked through some photo albums at my auntie's house.

Anything else of that ilk you can recall?

I think there used to be Miss Pears competitions, certainly in the early 90s as my friend entered her sister.
Maybe we have a winner here on MN 😄

Nobody knows what im on about when I mention these pictures,so here goes

Black and white (with shades of grey) and it was sand

You flipped it and the sand would fall really slowly and create a visual effect

Like a waterfall-this would have been the 80's (?)

Im 99% sure my mothers mate had these in the 80's but I could be talking bollocks and young me is mistaken

I remember most of these on the thread

they are being advertised on FB all the time!
I love them actaully and would love to have one!

We had Savlon.
My mother also insisted on giving my hair a final rinse in cold water - god that was horrible, and how it was meant to improve your hair, I don't know.

I think that’s so the hair follicles shrink, resulting in less hair loss.

Ds2 bought a lava lamp and it took me back to the 70s! He likes it, I think they are horrible!

I think they are relaxing and mesmerising!

I bought a round one in blue that you tipped up on the stand (but it seemed to lose the water over time and I couldn't top it up)

Think I got it on Ebay, which is how this came up in conversation

Dp had never seen one before

I clearly remember these being the same idea but as a picture

Say a picture of a waterfall but only the waterfall was the sand and when you tipped it,the waterfall would flow (im finding it hard to describe!)

I clearly remember being fascinated as a child with a neighbours one (that and ornaments of black cats-she had about 3 and they looked very 'fluid' and 80's style)

Are you my MIL? 😄
She loves a patterned toilet paper, and kitchen roll!

I remember friends houses having brass knick knacks (what are they called?)
by their bare brick fireplaces.

Horse brasses. My parents had them (I'm in my 60s)

Pears has changed formulation and doesn’t smell quite the same. I have a couple of the old bars in a drawer just to be able to smell my Grannie’s lovely bathroom.

I just knew they would have done that which is why I haven't bothered buying any since forever. Fortunately I can remember smells really well.

Arraminta · 06/02/2026 23:30

I treasured my bottle of perfume from the Avon catalogue. The glass bottle was shaped like a sitting unicorn and its silver horn was the lid. I also loved Avon's pink tinted lipbalm in the ice cream cone case and their tub of glittery talc which came with big pink powder puff.

My lifelong obsession with potions, lotions and high end cosmetics started very early, I see.

rainbowunicorn22 · 20/02/2026 12:32

using eggs on your hair for nice shiny hair, or vinegar for dark hair, made you smell like a chippy
Beer shampoo, not sure what that was supposed to do, but came in a barrel novelty container
sun in shampoo type thing supposed to make your hair sun-kissed
toners, all strange shades, used to put them on before you went out, but in truth, it never worked
Soap on a rope, especially ones from Avon ,all sorts, we had loads of them one Christmas
Denim aftershave for men who dont need to try too hard!
Brut with Henry Cooper splash it all over!

Citrusbergamia · 20/02/2026 13:31

The cold final rinse is done to give your hair more shine...apparently!

The avon bottles of aftershave my DF used to have...in the shape of a locomotive, ship, plane...

So many things on here that I can relate to and it's made me feel so nostalgic for those slower, easier times.

The ceramic dolphins were from Poole Pottery...my gran had the adult one and baby one.

The lovely thin crinkly Xmas wrapping paper; got superceded by much thicker quality paper. I really missed that noise when I was a child.

Tiny tears (dolly), a doll called 'Havoc' (similar to Sindy/Barbie) but was more of a 'tom-boy' kind of doll, so came with things like scuba diving stuff, combat clothing. Girls world (my DB cut the hair in odd places so it was never the same). Also another doll, slightly bigger than a Sindy where the top of the head, had a piece of 'hair' that you could pull out to make a longer hairstyle; no idea what the name of that was.

Glass of lemonade with a dollop of ice cream in - cream soda! Massive treat on a hot summer day.

Mum having 'Kays' catalogue. Dad doing the pools and we would have to be deathly quiet whilst he listened and wrote down the football scores on a Saturday afternoon in the back of the Daily Mirror.

Getting books from school and having to cover them with any kind of paper to protect them...wallpaper, brown paper (unfolded paper bag) or from a Sunday supplement magazine.

Buying Panda pops...the big bottles from the milkman (who used to come round early hours on his electric float) at Xmas, one bottle of each i.e. cola, lemonade, cherryade, limeade and getting money back when giving the empties back. Only ever had those at xmas...to expensive to buy at anytime of the year.

1 x bath a week, on a Sunday with a hair wash.

So many memories...

"Glass of lemonade with a dollop of ice cream in - cream soda! Massive treat on a hot summer day"

Or similarly, a Coke float, with a spoon to eat the ice-cream at the end - if it hadn't already melted!. Very refreshing on a hot day. ☀️

Beer shampoo, not sure what that was supposed to do, but came in a barrel novelty container.Lincobeer; Mum used that on our hair, then vinegar in the rinse for me (brunette) and lemon juice for my sister (blonde) We must have smelled like a salad dressing!

UnctuousUnicorns · 20/02/2026 16:28

Matey bubble bath and Vosene shampoo in our house.

Oh yes! My mum used to use Linco beer shampoo too. Then rinse me with vinegar (brunette) and my sister with lemon juice (blonde).

HoldingTheDoor · 20/02/2026 18:12

Soap on a rope.
