Things you'd forgotten about

String art.

Remember those pictures that hung on walls in the 70s/80s (? I'm guessing)
They usually had a black background and coloured string making geometric type patterns.
I had totally forgotten (most probably for the best 😂) that they had ever existed until I looked through some photo albums at my auntie's house.

Anything else of that ilk you can recall?

I made one of these in primary school! It's probably still in my parents' attic somewhere.

Aww that's great.
We made macrame plant holders, I think they're "in" again now aren't they!

Antimacassars on sofas and arm chairs and doilies under ornaments!

Edited

I never knew that’s what they were called! I guess we have ‘throws’ now for the same purpose.

StillFeelingTired · 23/01/2026 14:19

I grew up in Australia in the 70s and it seemed like every house had a badl painting of a topless woman kneeling with long blonde hair and some sort of flower tucked behind her ear. The same pairing I mean, not a number of different ones on that theme. Does anyone know what I mean? I tried to Google but it threw up too many dodgy images.

Ormally · 23/01/2026 14:20

Magic eye pictures ('90s). Just gone to an internet page about how they work that says 'Let's start with some easy ones'.
No, I still can't see them.

They do seem to be back in. A shop in our tourist town sells only these. Considering the cost of rent and business rates I have no idea how they have lasted. ( 3 years now)

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2026 14:21

Macrame isn’t that bad really , it can look nice.
I haven’t any myself, but I think anyone with it are usually a bit more of a hippy type of person and nice people! ( which I know is a bit nuts!)

Paying time-and-a-half, or double for working overtime.

Oh yes. Sigh.

NetflixWithoutFriendsIsWrong · 23/01/2026 14:23

Those little turtle figures you used to get in kinder surprises, especially the one where he's biting into a watermelon wedge

SydneyCarton · 23/01/2026 14:23

I used to think my grandma's Royal Doulton lady (it was called something like "Autumn Winds") was the most wonderful thing ever. I think we gave her the miniature version of it for Christmas or a birthday once.

@fishfingerbutty I used to know a girl who started collecting Eternal Beau china from when she was about 16 for when she got married and had her own home. She and her mum used to look at catalogues and save up for pieces, it was weird....

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2026 14:23

My boys loved the magic eye book ! They were clever and sold in ‘Athena ‘ with the posters of the tennis girl and the man holding the baby! Very popular once
I do remember the nude lady with the flower in her hair etc. Markets loved selling some odd art work back then.

Nope, can't picture what you mean @StillFeelingTired , you'll have to carry on searching... 😆

Having to wait till after 6 to make a call when it wasn’t “the dear time”.

Aah that reminds me of my friends parents who talked about "clocking in" at work.

Bulldog was banned at ds2’s primary for being too rough! It could get a bit hairy at times

Its given a different name now and still played. We used it a lot during rugby training only a few years ago! Can see why they stopped it in playgrounds though - unsupervised and onto concrete wouldn't be so good as on a muddy grass pitch.

This kind of thing...

OMG. Tween/teenage me used to make loads of those in the 1970's. I also had a Plasticraft kit and made plaques, paperweight and keyrings with shells and sea creatures in which I could buy with my pocket money at the shell shop in town. I can still remember the smell of the molton plastic now.

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2026 14:28

My parents used to hover around the telephone and stare at the clock ‘ not till after six o clock ‘ was the refrain.
Having to store the big telephone books somewhere , big tombs which were renewed every year along with the ‘ Thomson local’ for your trades and shops numbers.
I do remember’ customer service’ , something sadly lacking these days!

SydneyCarton · 23/01/2026 14:30

@the80sweregreat When I was in Venture Scouts we used to deliver phone books to raise funds for the unit.

Also local adverts at the cinema Grin

And then hang up before the hour was up!

Remember phone boxes where you actually had to use coins!!
We had graduated to phonecards when I went to uni and called home once a week from the phone student union bar!

It was strange going shopping on a Sunday wasn’t it! Sunday was the boring day, only the paper shop opened up our way and shut at one.
Suddenly we could go out 10 till 4 for actual shopping!
It really was a big deal and a big debate how it was ‘ the thin edge of the wedge ‘ ! Lol

My sister wrote to our MP about it - she had a Saturday retail job and didn't want to be asked to work Sundays

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2026 14:34

Local ads at the cinema were funny! The one showing for a local cab firm had actual chauffeurs in them with hats on. Complete fiction , it was usually a man with BO and car smelling of fags !
The cinema also showed B movies too.

Maccassar was a type of hair oil used by men. Antimacassars stopped the oil ruining upholstery

ohtowinthelottery · 23/01/2026 14:47

I remember staying in a town in South Wales for the weekend. It had 52 pubs and none of them were open on a Sunday!

Oopsylazy · 23/01/2026 14:51

Brass wall plates with a galleon and these black hexagonal mugs/plates - all my aunties had them!

Do you mean like the “Tina” painting everyone had?
