Things you'd forgotten about

String art.

Remember those pictures that hung on walls in the 70s/80s (? I'm guessing)
They usually had a black background and coloured string making geometric type patterns.
I had totally forgotten (most probably for the best 😂) that they had ever existed until I looked through some photo albums at my auntie's house.

Anything else of that ilk you can recall?

I remember a lot of these things.

I'll add a few of my own, but I'm in my late 60's now, so you might not all recall these

Block mascara
Plastic daffodils given free with I think it was washing powder
Green shield stamps
Collecting cards given with packets of tea
Goldfish kept in small round bowls (considered cruel now)
Dr White's sanitary towels with loops that you had to attach to a special belt
Padded satin birthday cards
Advent calendars with no chocolate, just a different picture each day

CannotBeInterestedInYourDrama · 27/01/2026 15:56

Origami. It was popular in the 70s. My parents used to like doing it.

And nothing said "You're a grown up now" like those 21st birthday cards with the big plastic "keys to the door" on them. Younger people today would think wtf is that all about, if they saw one now. 😅

CharliesAngles · 27/01/2026 18:26

Oh I do remember those padded satin valentine's cards!
I used to love browsing in our newsagents, they were run by the same family for a couple of generations.
Next door was a shoe shop, also a family business.

The time capsule my best friend and I buried in my back garden in 1971. Memory jogged by watching Call The Midwife on Sunday.

Have you dug it up? Or plan to?

Would really love to but haven't lived in that house for many years! I am still in touch with one of my old neighbours who lives a few houses down and she knows the people who live there now. Wondering if I can wangle an introduction or whether that would be just too weird. Also I live 200 miles away now, but do go back to the area a few times a year.
Need to do some thinking about whether I say anything or just let it lie (literally).

Silverbirchleaf · 27/01/2026 22:38

Perhaps you wait until 2031, and then it will sixty years since you buried it.

Yes, I could probably work out a cunning plan to get my hands on it by then. But suspect it might have already deteriorated. Still very intrigued though!

I'm pretty sure we had a load of Wade Whimsies which we got in Christmas crackers, but I may be misremembering that. I think my mum still has them.

Other things I'd forgotten about were in my aunt and uncles house in the late 70s, one being marble cigarette boxes and matching ashtray and lighter, and the other was an oil rain lamp just like this one

@Blingismything don’t blame yourself! I bought or was given the Rainbow Bright plaster of paris model kit when I was about seven and was so disappointed with how she came out. But we were conned. Those kits came with about 4 murky watercolour paints that sunk right in and the cheapest type of brush. The example on the box must have been done with some sort of quality paint especially for plaster. They set us up to fail! This only popped into my head as an epiphany a few weeks ago. 😆

UnctuousUnicorns · 28/01/2026 09:39

I got a Magic Roundabout set which I think was P.O.P. or similar - I seem to recall the medium started off like blancmange in the moulds before shrinking and drying hard so you could paint the figures. I remember that we couldn't get Zebedee's spring to stay in properly, so he couldn't bounce. I'm still traumatised to this day. 😅

CharliesAngles · 28/01/2026 11:16

We buried a time capsule at our secondary school.
It's now a housing development so I wonder if they ever came across it!

Thinking about those old fashioned valentine's cards reminded me of this...

Padded cards in their own box. How I wanted someone to buy me one , but I never did get one! Lol

Oh gosh yes, aren't they the "Love is..." pics? Remember them well - very odd. Different times!

Awww I'd forgotten about those - just brought back a lovely memory of my Grandad who used to buy them for my Nanna ♥️

winnieanddaisy · 28/01/2026 11:33

@stillfeelingtired, I remember the painting that you have described. She was quite exotic looking .

the80sweregreat · 28/01/2026 11:33

I went to the V and A museum in Dundee and they had an area devoted to old cards like the ‘love is ‘ ones and padded ones. It was interesting seeing how cards have evolved , but now they are fairly boring and a bit small these days in comparison. Hardly any character.

I bought my 1st Gf one when I was 15.

Majorettes. My Auntie Sharon (my dad's sister, 17 years his junior) was a majorette in her youth. I'm not sure if it was a particularly NE thing? The family were from Newcastle.

Ne Scotland 70s it was a thing remember girls with their twirly batons.

CharliesAngles · 28/01/2026 12:35

Now that is something I had totally forgotten about!
It was definitely a thing in Kent, where we visited our cousins in the summer.
I thought they look so clever in their outfits twirling their batons 😄

Spider plants/cheese plants hanging from the ceiling by a macrame plant pot holder.

AdaDex · 28/01/2026 12:51

I've recently rediscovered Adam and the Ants. The world was a better place with a dandy highwayman on the loose 😁
