Things you'd forgotten about

String art.

Remember those pictures that hung on walls in the 70s/80s (? I'm guessing)
They usually had a black background and coloured string making geometric type patterns.
I had totally forgotten (most probably for the best 😂) that they had ever existed until I looked through some photo albums at my auntie's house.

Anything else of that ilk you can recall?

Now that is something I had totally forgotten about!
It was definitely a thing in Kent, where we visited our cousins in the summer.
I thought they look so clever in their outfits twirling their batons 😄

Good to hear it was widespread! I loved watching them too - so clever and rhythmic, marching and twirling. My Aunty Sharon was only 12 years older than me, tiny and petite, with long, almost black hair all down her back, she seemed so glamorous to me as a child.

Oh and we also had this heating system of vents in the walls, we turned it on in winter and the smell of the burning dust followed by the heat was one of my favourite things... Hope someone knows what I'm on about. Oh and glass internal doors too, with a circle pattern, and glass above the doors upstairs with a little gap for ventilation. So odd!

My Grandma had this type of heating, just brought back lots of good memories remembering that smell
The calls of "don't you dare slam that door, you'll break it" 😀

Ne Scotland 70s it was a thing remember girls with their twirly batons.

South west and I was a majorette back in the 80s!

@CountryGirlInTheCity I currently have spider plants and made my own macrame hanger ☺️

the80sweregreat · 28/01/2026 23:29

The yearly Town show loved a majorette parade and floats and someone was made a princess and wore a shash. I doubt many places have these anymore!

Yes! We had a “pageant” every year in the town I grew up in, floats, majorettes etc…

We had hot air central heating. It was common in houses built in the 1960s. My parents had it until they died a few years ago & I know if at least one house locally with it. I used to love sitting by the warm air vent when I got in from school & the cat had his own little carpet sample square to sit on beside it. I stool begrudge the wall space that radiators take up. The thing I hated was that cigarette smoke got blown around the house (everyone smoked in the late 60s). Also there was a vent between 2 bedrooms which wasn't great for privacy...

tworottenapples · 29/01/2026 09:18

We still have warm air central heating. The house was built in the 80's. We had to have the boiler replaced since we bought it and at the time couldn't afford to change to radiator central heaters and a combi boiler, so had to change for another warm air boiler, which is still working. It warms the house up very quickly and people always comment about how warm our house is.

Our local shops used to close on a Wednesday afternoon too, back in the days when there used to be separate butchers, bakers and candlestick makers greengrocers.

There was a local football team called the early closers.

the80sweregreat · 29/01/2026 14:25

Sheffield Wednesday football club is called that because they trained on a Wednesday afternoon as it was half day closing for many shops around the town and the place where they trained.

I always wondered why they were called that!

In the 1980's I used to buy Vidal Sassoon shampoo & conditioner in a pink plastic bottle from a local independent drug store.

It had the most divine smell, I was gutted when it was discontinued.

Nothing in all these years has come close to the fragrance...

HoldingTheDoor · 29/01/2026 15:20

Does anyone remember dancing sunflowers and the stalls in shopping centres where you could pay to have them write your name on a grain of rice?

CharliesAngles · 29/01/2026 15:21

@Smiling2022 my favourite shampoo from the 80s was Salon Selectives which came in a pinky red bottle, it smelt of apples!
I'd love to be able to buy that again.

Timotai shampoo! Not sure if you can still buy it , but it did smell nice.
Don’t remember salon selectives , but Vidal Sassoon did a kit in fancy black bottles with finishing cream and so on. It felt so decadent to have a branded shampoo that wasn’t green Voseen .

CharliesAngles · 29/01/2026 15:34

@the80sweregreat here's a blast from the past! 😅

Woodleigh Green apple shampoo. Now that did smell of apples. So much so, I got attacked by wasps when I used it in the summer. Grin

AInightingale · 29/01/2026 17:30

Jojoba shampoo from the Body Shop - smelt amazing but turned your hair into candyfloss frizz if I remember rightly.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 29/01/2026 23:15

Vidal Sassoon shampoo - smelled of marzipan.

Thedownwardspiralpath · 30/01/2026 10:21

Pendelphin Rabbits 😃

AInightingale · 30/01/2026 11:32

And those glass ornaments of animals that were popular early 80s - they were made of 'crystal' and had sort of a holographic effect under light? I loved looking at them in shop windows. They seemed very glam.

I'm SO glad I decided against it. Seeing it everywhere is bad enough, without having it in the house.

Pendelphin Rabbits 😃

Apparently they are collector’s items so don’t chuck them out till you’ve checked!

Zoopet · 30/01/2026 21:48

Tate and Lyle syrup in a green and gold tin.
When you stuck your spoon in it I always managed to drip some gloop down the side.
Co-incidentally I bought some the other day and it's now in a plastic squeezy bottle. Sigh.
When did that happen?

Thesuperlativesistillloveyou · 30/01/2026 22:05

As a kid I loved a spoon of syrup from the tin.
