Things you'd forgotten about

String art.

Remember those pictures that hung on walls in the 70s/80s (? I'm guessing)
They usually had a black background and coloured string making geometric type patterns.
I had totally forgotten (most probably for the best 😂) that they had ever existed until I looked through some photo albums at my auntie's house.

Anything else of that ilk you can recall?

I’m enjoying this thread as much as it’s making me sad. I’m not sure nostalgia is a good thing!

As a child blankets on my bed there was one that felt scratchy dont know what it was made of .Then topped with a pink candlestick cover .
I also remember going on long car journeys with my parents to visit grandparents , me and 2 siblings and no seatbelts going down the motorway oh and the dog was in the back with us as well .

We didn't have a car until 1980, before which we would travel by train to holiday destinations. One year, I think '77, we went on holiday with my uncle (Dad's brother), aunt and cousin. We travelled down to Cornwall (from NW England) in their estate car, my uncle driving, aunt next to him, my parents in the back seats, and my brother, our cousin and me bouncing about untethered in the back, on cushions or pillows. It seems unthinkable now, but was quite normal back then, before safety standards massively improved.

Smoking on the left in the cinema ( about two feet away from the right).
Smoking indoors anywhere, really. I remember as a student HCP in the early eighties, smoking in the ward kitchen.
Also had a glass of wine in the hospital canteen with our free Christmas dinner while on duty: then we went back to work on the wards, and drove home afterwards.

We lived in Sussex, and used to visit my Mum's family in Co. Durham. We travelled to London Victoria by train, crossed the city to King's Cross, and got another train to Newcastle upon Tyne. One year we travelled by sleeper train, which was very exciting for us.

Having to wait till after 6 to make a call when it wasn’t “the dear time”.

Yep! And having to sit on the stairs to make the call while your Dad paced about at intervals, tapping his wrist...

Those bead seat covers for your car. Every car seemed to have them. Supposedly helped you with backache on long journey. Never had one so idk if they worked.

The CB Radio craze.

Those green sunvisor strips to put on your car windscreen with Tracy and Wayne pay on them. Or whatever. I remember seeing one during the Jeremy Thorpe scandal where some wag had put Jeremy and Norman.

Yes, CB radios! I remember going round my cousin's, he could listen in to police radios I'm sure?

14, 14 a copy 😂

Irememberwhenitwasallfieldsroundhere · 25/01/2026 16:09

Thelwell pony prints anyone?

Thesuperlativesistillloveyou · 25/01/2026 16:37

Mum had a 'rubber plant'made of plastic and you could take the leaves off and change them about early 70s.
Dark wood ornaments of African animals,giraffe,deer.70s.

Those pictures night shore scene with a birds wings and half naked woman standing on the cusp of the wing..70s.

That was 'Wings of Love' by Stephen Pearson! Our auntie and uncle had it on their 'best room' wall, and we thought they must be right pervs... (And a couple who looked less like the bare-naked couple than my auntie and uncle you cannot imagine...) 🤢

And yes to Thelwell prints and mugs and books (which we kept alongside our James Herriot and Pullein-Thompson horse-girl books)...

The black stuff that you scratched away to make a picture was called, I believe, 'scraperboard'?

These soup bowls, free with petrol 😊

I haven’t RTFT but has someone mentioned tiger tokens yet? Collected them with every £5 of petrol (which would last forever) and for every 6 you could get free stuff. I don’t remember soup bowls but we still have the glasses!

fishfingerbutty · 25/01/2026 18:26

A PP mentioned a “ best room”, and I remembered that DH’s parents had a best room at the front of the house that no one actually used. DH’s six siblings and their assorted partners and offspring all crowded into one room and the kitchen.
The best room’s decor was frozen in time.
Very occasionally, his dad would escape there for a bit of peace.

That reminds of Monica's (of Friends) "guest towels" in the bathroom, which were not meant to be used by guests at all, they were just for show 😅

Those cardboard doll figures that you used to press the paper clothes on to, kept in place with folding tabs.

CharliesAngles · 25/01/2026 19:42

@MaidOfSteel loved those!

What about those "painting" books where you just dipped your brush with plain water to reveal the pictures?

I was minding my step granddaughter the other day, she was looking for something online with her tablet and I said I'd check the laptop, after a few minutes she asked why I was doing that with my fingers, she'd never seen anyone touch typing before, this led onto me telling her about queuing up in typing class to have a go on the electric typewriter.....her mind was blown.

Of course now she knows I'm ancient where as she wasn't too sure before this information....I'm in my fifties 😁

She didn't believe me that phone boxes were a thing 😊

I loved those when I was a little girl, you’d had to cut the clothes out of a magazine my dad used to buy them for me

I think it is ‘Wings of Desire’ there is a photo of the Happy Mondays all lying on a bed with one on the wall behind, will see if I can track that down

DungareesTrombonesDinos · 25/01/2026 20:36

The pools and the pools man! He came round our street collecting people's money, and had a money.... apron thing on. Could play spot the ball. My Gran won enough to take us on our first abroad holiday on the pools!

CalzoneOnLegs · 25/01/2026 20:42

BiddyPopthe2nd · 26/01/2026 08:09
