Tomato soup and a bagel enough for lunch?

DorothyCrowfootHodgkin · 21/01/2026 16:20

My DP and I had a bagel with jam for breakfast around 8:30, then a bagel with cream of tomato soup (out of a tin) for lunch. I just said I'm feeling peckish but he's saying I shouldn't given we had lunch.

I don't think that a bagel and some soup is enough to see you through to dinner (around 7:00pm) unless you've also had a big breakfast.

What would you say?

You probably feel hungry because you’ve eaten bread for both your meals, it likely spiked your blood sugar due to little protein, which has then made it drop leaving you hungry.

Hatty65 · 21/01/2026 16:22

I've got a patio if you need one...

It would enrage me having a partner saying smugly 'You shouldn't feel hungry' simply because they don't. It implies you are greedy/fat or lack their superior self control. I really dislike people who comment on other folks' eating habits.

If you are hungry, you are hungry. Have something.

hahagogomomo · 21/01/2026 16:24

I agree with him that a bagel plus cream of tomato soup is a decent lunch, but I would potentially have some fruit mid pm without feeling guilty

Peckish is different to hungry.

Since this is on MN I must ask. Was it half a tin of soup?

Porkpieandmustard · 21/01/2026 16:26

Half a tin of soup isn’t very much. Was it half a bagel 🥯 or a whole one?

yeesh · 21/01/2026 16:27

What’s it got to do with him? Tell him to fuck off and have a snack if you’re hungry. You haven’t eaten any protein or veg/fruit so no wonder you’re hungry.

CandiedPrincess · 21/01/2026 16:28

Haha I had a WHOLE tin of soup for lunch, but no bagel. But I am dieting Confused and yes I'm hungry.

If you're hungry you're hungry, it's not up to anyone else to tell you how much you should or shouldn't be feeling it, tell him to naff off.

Bonkers1966 · 21/01/2026 16:28

It was the jam that did for you. Banana all the way.

newmenewwhatever · 21/01/2026 16:28

You are an adult and can eat without permission from someone

Placetobreathe · 21/01/2026 16:29

As a lunch it's fine. But only if you'd had a more substantial breakfast.

Personally my breakfast is my biggest meal of the day - home made smoothie and porridge - so I often don't eat lunch at all because i'm just not hungry at lunchtime.

inickedthisname · 21/01/2026 16:31

It really depends on exactly when you ate and what activity you’ve been doing since.

How is it any of his concern? If you’re hungry then you’re hungry- he can fuck right off.

Sunnyside4 · 21/01/2026 16:33

I'm only 7st, but so far have had berries, yogurt and chopped nuts, then toast with peanut butter for breakfast. Lunch was mackerel, salad and apple. Shortbread and a cookie this aafternoon. I guess I've had more calories than you, I won't make it until our evening meal, so will have some low salt mixed nuts soon.

AgnesX · 21/01/2026 16:34

Half a tin of soup and a bagel each?

Nowhere near enough. You should have a good filling in the bagel. I'd swap the tinned soup for home made too.

Quagmireschin · 21/01/2026 16:34

if you are hungry, eat. I wouldn’t have even commented anything to anyone, I would just go and get some food.

My five year old has just eaten half a tin of tomato soup and slice of toast with cheese on for an after school snack. Half a tin of soup for an adult isn’t a lot.

Justploddingonandon · 21/01/2026 16:34

Did you share the soup? I find that half a tin (or indeed the made for 1 person) tins are never enough even with a couple of slices of bread.

ElsaSnow · 21/01/2026 16:35

Bring your dinner forward rather than having another snack??

CapybarasAreJustGuineaBigs · 21/01/2026 16:37
  1. That's clearly not enough food, or rather not enough nutrition, for an adult to have from waking til 7pm
  1. Wtf has it got to do with him if you're hungry? Eat what you want when you want. Not his business or problem.
Nicecatneighbour · 21/01/2026 16:38

One can of soup only equals one average sized bowl, doesn't it? Half a can would not be enough for me. And I have a proper chicken salad or cheese and ham sandwich with that.

dammit88 · 21/01/2026 16:38

I would be hungry too. But it’s not for him to say if you are or aren’t! Why is he so bothered? Is he trying to make a different point?!

ginasevern · 21/01/2026 16:38

If you're hungry, you're hungry and he's got no right to say otherwise. Christ, it's not as if you've had a groaning roast dinner for lunch. I think anyone with a reasonably normal appetite would feel hungry if that's all you've had until 7pm. What's his problem - apart from being a man?

SheSpeaks · 21/01/2026 16:40

If you are hungry and your circumstances and job allow for it - eat. As much as you want. Whenever you like. Sod all to do with anyone else.

I didn’t manage time for any breakfast or a lunch break today because of work, and now I’m on the bus home I am getting hungry! But will need to sort the kids and get the dinner on so I won’t be eating until 7 either. But it is annoying as if I eat now I’ll not want my dinner, it’s annoying to be out of sync with everyone else.

Well to me it is. But I just have a few spoons of granola in the morning and then nothing until early evening. We all eat what we need to eat.

ShowmetheMapletree · 21/01/2026 16:48

Yes, more than enough. Although I don't tend to eat a lot through the day, not a stringent 3 meals a day person.

Edited to say, is your dh the food police? If you're still hungry eat something. We all have our days
