Tomato soup and a bagel enough for lunch?

DorothyCrowfootHodgkin · 21/01/2026 16:20

My DP and I had a bagel with jam for breakfast around 8:30, then a bagel with cream of tomato soup (out of a tin) for lunch. I just said I'm feeling peckish but he's saying I shouldn't given we had lunch.

I don't think that a bagel and some soup is enough to see you through to dinner (around 7:00pm) unless you've also had a big breakfast.

What would you say?

I had no breakfast, a croissant with jam for lunch and will be having soup and bread for tea. Sedentary day though because the weather is crap, I eat more on other days

DorothyCrowfootHodgkin · 21/01/2026 18:30

Haven't had a chance to read all the posts but I do know that what I had is not a good diet. I know that the lack of protein and/or fat is what made me peckish/hungry so quickly. I'm not overweight and I'm a size 10.

It was just my DP's comment that made me think 'is it me or him?' but either way I didn't care and had a snack of protein.

I wouldn't let anyone tell me what I can and cannot eat (including 'traditional' meal times - I usually eat when I'm hungry)!

It’s not the best nutritionally but it’s not a ‘biggish breakfast’.

.

It would be for me, but then I don't eat breakfast except at weekends.

Haven’t RTFT but I was shocked to find that a portion of soup IS half a tin. Definitely not enough for me

I was arguing on another thread about this to find I was wrong, it is only half a tin!!!

Who thinks up these things!!

soupyspoon · 21/01/2026 18:47

This thread has made me make a tomato soup, really nice. I put ham in mine though. And chicken buillon

capybaraforlife · 21/01/2026 18:48

If i have a bagel for breakfast im stuffed until way past lunch, two in a day seems insane.

Yes, this thread has made me crave tomato soup now for dinner. I always find it boring without lots of buttered bread/toast! 🤤

Bagel 300 calories x 2 plus butter and jam 100
soup 250 calories

950 calories by lunch on mostly bread. It's not very filling but it's lots of carbs. You could eat that many calories and be much more satiated.
However the more important aspect is that your DH is a twat for saying that.

If a bagel makes you feel 'stuffed' your body is very unusual - they are very high carb and low protein so the effect on your body is to increase insulin and blood sugar steeply and then drop them, causing rapid return of hunger.

Half a tin of soup and a bagel each?

Nowhere near enough. You should have a good filling in the bagel. I'd swap the tinned soup for home made too.

It's very low fibre and low in nutrients. Of course you're hungry. Your brain craves better nutrition.

soupyspoon · 21/01/2026 19:05

People in Spain and Italy and France dont bang on about empty carbs when having their morning bread/croissant and coffee

canuckup · 21/01/2026 19:08

I can't believe you don't know what half a tin of soup looks like in a bowl

And yes. Double carbs will spike and make you feel hungry

soupyspoon · 21/01/2026 19:10

I think you can see the pattern on the bowl at the bottom with only half a tin.

shivermetimbers77 · 21/01/2026 19:11

I would be gnawing off my arm in hunger by 4pm if I had that for lunch on a busy workday.. unless there was a decent wedge of cheddar (or other protein/fat source) alongside it.

As a lunch it's fine. But only if you'd had a more substantial breakfast.

Personally my breakfast is my biggest meal of the day - home made smoothie and porridge - so I often don't eat lunch at all because i'm just not hungry at lunchtime.

So Mumsnet! Your biggest meal of the day-some porridge and a smoothie!

Most people I know in those countries (well, Spain and France, I don't know any Italians) start the day with a coffee and a cigarette, not a croissant!

In total style as well. No wonder they're not hungry!

Fatiguedwithlife · 21/01/2026 19:26

I’m always hungry from about 3pm so have tea early (5ish).
i did have some chilli nuts and a couple of mini scotch eggs to keep me going at 4pm too. Your DH can get in the bin

Hahah, I bet a chicken lasts 10 days in her house too

Pineapplewaves · 21/01/2026 20:20

DP and I would have eaten one can of tomato soup each, one bagel each plus one or two pieces of fruit and a yoghurt. That would keep us going until dinner. You definitely need some fruit or veg, you are supposed to have five a day.

If soup is a regular thing and you are both eating at home could you make your own? You would get a bigger portion, it would be more nutritious and filling and much cheaper than buying cans.

Did you share the soup? I find that half a tin (or indeed the made for 1 person) tins are never enough even with a couple of slices of bread.

Yes, I always have a full tin of soup, unless it's just a starter. But then, I don't eat breakfast at all.

tonyhawks23 · 21/01/2026 20:35

Sharing a tin of soup and a sandwich would be fine for us so would assume bagel the same.
?lunch is frugal week days as the kids are fed at school but nice weekend lunch would be soup and bread/toastie,that sounds like a good lunch to me? Never thought I was being stingy with that tbf.but would add butter/cheese.

Placetobreathe · 21/01/2026 20:43

CurlewKate · 21/01/2026 19:14

My smoothie typically consists of the juice of an orange and a lemon, a kiwi fruit, a banana, a piece of carrot, a cherry tomato, a handful of blueberries, a piece of ginger, a portion of kale, a handful of almonds, and some chia seeds. I can assure you it is extremely substantial. So followed by a bowl of porridge with sultanas and cinnamon and served with milk I don't feel hungry until well into the afternoon.
Is that " so Mumsnet" ? It's certainly not for the faint hearted.

DeltaVariant · 21/01/2026 21:31

Bread then bread and soup id be hangry by 4. I am a scrambled eggs for breakfast sort though.
