Tomato soup and a bagel enough for lunch?

DorothyCrowfootHodgkin · 21/01/2026 16:20

My DP and I had a bagel with jam for breakfast around 8:30, then a bagel with cream of tomato soup (out of a tin) for lunch. I just said I'm feeling peckish but he's saying I shouldn't given we had lunch.

I don't think that a bagel and some soup is enough to see you through to dinner (around 7:00pm) unless you've also had a big breakfast.

What would you say?

Peak MN!

Yes a part of me died with 'low salt mixed nuts'

Urgh

Pour that salt on!!!

MsMcCoo · 21/01/2026 17:47

Empty carbs😭 sorry but maaaan

LowdermilkPark · 21/01/2026 17:49

I would’ve just had the soup, no bagel. Both would be too much for me. I have to watch my weight.

I’d be hungry on that.

Because it is refined carbs, no protein, no fibre.

If I had wholemeal toast and banana (or egg) for breakfast, and chunky veg soup with a slice of wholemeal, some salad and a slice of chicken I’d be fine.

I would say a bagel is a biggish breakfast, and I wouldn't have another one with lunch. The empty carbs are making you hungry, those meals have very little food value.

It’s not the best nutritionally but it’s not a ‘biggish breakfast’.

.

LookingThroughGlass · 21/01/2026 17:53

It's about what I'd have for lunch, but unless you're trying to lose weight, there's no reason why you shouldn't have a healthy snack if you're hungry - some fruit, maybe, or a yoghurt - something like that which won't 'spoil your dinner'.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 21/01/2026 17:55

You are hungry because you haven't had protein but yes bagel and soup is a decent lunch.

Chinsupmeloves · 21/01/2026 17:57

Do you both wfh and sit and watch what each other eats during the day? My reply would be yes i do and you could embellish your time of cycle and its needs lol 😆

In a what world is it a biggish breakfast? It's no more kcal than two Weetabix with semi-skimmed milk. A rubbish breakfast perhaps, but not big.

I'm a size 8 or 10 but apparently eat a hell of a lot more than nearly everyone on this thread. Or am not delusional about what I eat. Everyone I see at work is eating more than that for lunch.

mumsickles · 21/01/2026 18:00

You ate simple processed carbs which turned to glucose really quickly, spiking your insulin which then crashed and then you are starving. Eat something with fibre and protein and this up and down won’t happen!

muddyford · 21/01/2026 18:01

It wouldn't be enough for me. I need a decent breakfast to last till lunchtime, so after just one bagel I would need more than a bagel and soup.

Glasskey · 21/01/2026 18:04

If you both had a tin each then unreasonable. If half then maybe some fruit later.

FinallyHere · 21/01/2026 18:05

alloutofcareunits · 21/01/2026 16:22

You probably feel hungry because you’ve eaten bread for both your meals, it likely spiked your blood sugar due to little protein, which has then made it drop leaving you hungry.

This. Add more protein and fat to stay satiated for longer.

Iloveeverycat · 21/01/2026 18:05

It's nothing to do with him if you are peckish. Does he normally coment on what you eat and whether you should be hungry or not. I have never had this conversation and we have been together over 40 years

PersephoneSmith · 21/01/2026 18:09

As a child I was never allowed to have any lunch because my mum wasn’t hungry so she told me there was no way I could be either.
She always had eggs and bacon for breakfast, all I was ever given was a bowl of corn flakes.
Goes without saying now that I would never tolerate anyone telling me if should or shouldn’t be hungry 😡

Ahhhblissful · 21/01/2026 18:12

I would not be hungry after eating that, I WOULD BE STARVING.
Sorry i like food not flavoured water and a bagel.
It nothing to do with him op if you want to eat go eat.

nothingtoseehereatall · 21/01/2026 18:12

I would happily live entirely on bagels so no shade on carbs here, but I’d say that little/no protein just makes you get hungry sooner. Protein has a higher “satiety” index meaning it makes you feel fuller for longer.

i mean also, eff off to him, snack away! If you are hungry you are hungry (and I would be for sure).

But if you didn’t want to in future, you could swap the soup for eggs maybe? but like I say, ONLY if you want to.

oh and my DH would claim he was practically dead of starvation on that 🤪🤪 Between us we do a lot of exercise though (me running he cycling) so carbs are our best friends.

That is horrible. You must have been starving.

I thought it was just my mother that said that.
Im not hungry so i no your not i was starving sometimes.

And like you as adult i dont tolerate anyone telling me if im hungry or that i shouldnt eat something.
They can fuck right off.

Nosejobnelly · 21/01/2026 18:15

White bread - will spike your blood sugar and then it drops like a stone so that’s why you’re hungry.

RaininSummer · 21/01/2026 18:15

It's not the size of what you had to eat but I think it's the fact that everything you have eaten is high GI ie highish sugar so you crash quickly. Where is the protein to keep you full?

soupyspoon · 21/01/2026 18:19

Just to say that OP wasnt asking for dietary advice or about how to 'keep full' or whether other people considered a bagel to be a sugar rush (its not for everyone)

Just whether other people would find it filling or not

Well yes, at the time it would be filling and people have different capacities, some people would manage it on until dinner, some wouldnt.

My mother thought the whole concept of lunch was poncy and not a real thing. Breakfast was a small bowl of cereal and dinner might be marmite sandwiches, or Smash and beans, or pilchards on toast. School lunch was the highlight of my life, all the dinner ladies knew me as a “good eater” who would never turn down anything. We didn’t have lunch at weekends or in the holidays and were constantly starving. We used to steal food.

I wouldn’t tolerate a partner telling me how to feel or when to eat. I have enough issues with food, without some sanctimonious bloke weighing in to mansplain my own appetite to me.

Moonlightfrog · 21/01/2026 18:19

It is enough but I would have probably had a piece for fruit after as I like something sweet after most meals.

As others have said…having 2 bread products for breakfast and lunch probably won’t keep you full for long.

IHeartJeff · 21/01/2026 18:25

Haven’t RTFT but I was shocked to find that a portion of soup IS half a tin. Definitely not enough for me
