Tomato soup and a bagel enough for lunch?

DorothyCrowfootHodgkin · 21/01/2026 16:20

My DP and I had a bagel with jam for breakfast around 8:30, then a bagel with cream of tomato soup (out of a tin) for lunch. I just said I'm feeling peckish but he's saying I shouldn't given we had lunch.

I don't think that a bagel and some soup is enough to see you through to dinner (around 7:00pm) unless you've also had a big breakfast.

What would you say?

I'd like mealtimes to be abolished and they may well be largely when the dc move out.

billiongulls · 21/01/2026 22:01

I'd be chewing my own arm off with hunger if lunch was half a tin of soup and a bagel. No protein, small quantities. But I'm a big eater.

If i have a bagel for breakfast im stuffed until way past lunch, two in a day seems insane.

Hahaha

I would be hungry by 4 with that. But I tend to eat more early on the day, bigger lunch and then smaller meal around 5pm.

IndigoBluey · 21/01/2026 22:59

You can tote it up yourself? Recommended calorie intake is around 1900-2000 per day for women. I doubt yours would be close to that? More importantly, if you are hungry and want to eat dinner or a snack, why are you concerned about your other half’s validation?

mondaytosunday · 21/01/2026 23:12

If you’re hungry you’re hungry. I make my own soup with butternut squash, onions and some chorizo. A bit of cream and stock. Not much protein there but it’s very filling and a bowl of that (no bread) would keep me til dinner. But tomato is fairly thin and I’m not surprised you’re hungry. Add an egg to breakfast and some protein at lunch.

BertieWoostersChaps · 22/01/2026 00:05

Bit of a crap food day really - no protein at either meal so of course you're hungry.

capybaraforlife · 22/01/2026 05:18

billiongulls i will say i always have a full tin of soup - in fact had tomato for dinner last night :)

but two bagels is crazy talk :)

bathsmat · 22/01/2026 05:26

But I just have a few spoons of granola in the morning and then nothing until early evening.

I have a few spoons of granola on Monday and then a light supper on Friday.

SplendidUtterly · 22/01/2026 05:37

Just eat.
Is your DP ill or dieting? I ask because two bagels and half a tin of soup would have most adult males chewing their arms off by 7pm. Why is he telling you that you shouldn't be hungry?

hahagogomomo · 21/01/2026 16:24

I agree with him that a bagel plus cream of tomato soup is a decent lunch, but I would potentially have some fruit mid pm without feeling guilty

I don't think people generally feel guilty for eating fruit.

MammaBear1 · 22/01/2026 06:38

You probably feel hungry as you’ve had very little fibre or protein so far. These are the things that keep you fuller so you might choose to have different breakfasts and lunches to stop the hunger.

if you’re hungry though, eat. Your appetite is not his business to question.

Bjorkdidit · 22/01/2026 06:50

This thread has to be a wind up.

UPF - tick
No obvious protein source - tick
Carb based breakfast and lunch - tick
Potentially controlling or judgemental man policing a woman's eating habits - tick

But come on MN, no-one's mentioned the huge amount of salt in the tinned soup and manufactured bread products - disappointing.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/01/2026 06:51

I ate three bagels on the drive home after buying a dozen at my favourite bagel shop a couple days ago.

Jaderebecca · 22/01/2026 06:58

Probably need some fats and protein to keep you fuller

growingsidewaysnotup · 22/01/2026 07:01

Is this a typical day of eating?

For breakfast try a bowl of Greek yoghurt (it must be Greek, more protein), half fat free half full fat. Add some honey to taste and some berries, it’ll fill you right up.

For lunch, try a bowl of soup with a small bread roll, some butter and a source of protein.

Neurodiversemom · 22/01/2026 07:05

If you've only had bagels and soup... that’s a light lunch. It’s normal to be hungry again before dinner.

Clonakilla · 22/01/2026 07:12

The usual disordered eaters out in force I see.

’Not feeling guilty’ for eating a piece of fruit? FFS.

If you’re hungry and it’s not dinner time yet have a snack. Like many many many people across the world. Perfectly normal behaviour.

😱
I wouldn't have been able to eat ALL DAY after that!!
😉

popcornandpotatoes · 22/01/2026 07:39

Absolutely no one should tell you that you shouldn't feel peckish. If you feel peckish then eat something. How very dare he, I'd be absolutely outraged if DH told me I shouldn't be hungry for whatever reason.

Granola is absolutely full of sugar. Disgusting.

Granola!? You might as well have just eaten a mars bar for breakfast

DorothyCrowfootHodgkin · 22/01/2026 10:39

I am aware that yesterday's choice of breakfast and lunch weren't healthy - I understand the food groups and what a healthy diet looks like. But I was in a hurry and didn't have much in (we both WFH) so that's what I chose to have.

It was one tin and one bagel each for lunch, by the way.

So my question was not about my choice of food and whether it was healthy or not - it was purely asked to see if others would also have been peckish after the amount (and type) of food I had had.

I am honestly surprised that around half of the people here think it's enough food until dinner, but then that's exactly what I wanted to find out :-)

iamnotalemon · 22/01/2026 10:45

Now I want a bagel. An onion one with lots of butter. yum!

OceanSafari · 22/01/2026 11:07

Whether it's enough food or not is relative to each individual. The fact that tomato soup and (white? I'm assuming) bagels are fairly high in sugars, plus the lack of protein and fat, you would get hungry again sooner.
