Anyone preparing for a lot of snow tomorrow?

We're in Leicestershire and it looks like we're due quite a bit.

How are the Cornish faring today?
I live in a valley so have been protected from the very worst gusts mid- Cornwall.
Local secondary closed today though, DS delighted!

I’ve not had any electricity since 5pm yesterday, I need coffee!!!

But the silver lining is that my workplace is closed and so I had a lie in.

I hope everyone is ok and not had too much damage to their property.

Yew! Having an extended lie in, as our village is pretty much cut off by fallen trees (there is one tiny farm lane to the outside world, but inevitably it's now full of reversing cars). Chief irritation right now is people constantly asking on the village FB page how to get out of the village, WHEN IF THEY READ ANY PREVIOUS POSTS THEY WOULD SEE IT HAS BEEN COVERED IN DETAIL!

Both DCs schools are closed (the secondary chiefly because lots of its pupils are bussed in and the bus garage was also completely cut off).

We do have power though, although had a 2 hour power cut last night. Loads of areas in Cornwall still don't have power and are told it probably won't be on until Sunday morning.

Helston doesn't have any water! (Because the pumping station doesn't have any power apparently).

I was supposed to start a college course today, but it doesn't matter because the college is closed too.

Best wishes to all who are affected by this weather. Schools have to close if staff can't get in, and many teachers don't live within walking distance of their schools. Also thinking of medical staff who can't get in to hospitals, surgeries and dental practices etc. Snow and stormy weather might be fun or interesting for some of us - but in this country, such weather can have a huge and detrimental effect on others.

I am retired now, and it is a delight not to have to get up at six and battle through bad weather in the dark.

We had snow last night, caused a bit of chaos on some of the roads initially but it's melting now.

School closed I think due to a lack of teachers being able to get in, my husband had arranged to take the day off as soon as school announced they were closed and I was told not to bother going to work because it's too quiet.

So it's a snow day after all, just have a lack of actual snow here.

PigletJohn · 09/01/2026 11:56

5C and 20mph wind here.

Looks like the worst of it is passed now except for East Anglia to Dover.

Anyone in Hemel Hempstead area? Has the snow melted?
I am supposed to be going there to a funeral later.

Oh hi neighbour

waving
I take it you were more sensible than me and stayed home! 😄

NortyTorty · 09/01/2026 12:16

We’ve lost half a tree but all within the garden and no damage other than to the tree itself. DC4 also delighted that Truro College is shut and enjoyed a fab lie in.

My business partner has no power (we both work from home) but trees currently blocking the road so they can’t get to me and I can’t get our camping power bank/station to them 🤣

Good afternoon we are faced with a major clear up down here on the Lizard, lots of trees down lots of roof tiles down( including mine) some flooding and a big fat dose oh FFS what happened.
Last night I spoke to an idiot man who had 2 small children with him and he'd brought them out to see the waves, unbloodybelieveable stupidity exhibited by this bloke especially when his poor little boy was knocked over by a big wave. Poor kid got up and started running through fear while Daddy stood there like a prize twat. I managed to run after and grab the child and read the riot act to his father.
Some people should not be allowed out grrrrr grrrrrrrr grrrrrrrr

RampantIvy · 09/01/2026 13:16

Thank goodness you were there @Port1aCastis

The recent tragedy in Withernsea wouldn't have happened if people had been more sensible.

I live in mid Cornwall & last night is up there with one of the worst storms since I moved here in the early 80s. What is wrong with people?!!

PigletJohn · 09/01/2026 13:41

Sadly there are people who do not know the sea wants to kill you.

@ThursdayLastWeek - we seem to have fared pretty well apart from our chickens losing half their house! Quite a few trees down and my DDs friend had a tree through their ceiling. My 85 yr old mum has no power and they've said could be without it until Sunday so be going over to her if roads are passable which is questionable.

DD and I got up at 6.45 and then she saw that Truro college was not opening. She said angrily - "I've just put my mascara on!!" and went back to bed (without taking it off!).🤣

DS in Penryn also lost power yesterday evening and has been told it won't be restored until Sunday morning.

I hope your mum is okay 💐

That's terrifying. I live in a coastal town on the other side of the country and have fishermen relatives that have been lost at sea in the past, as well as many family members in the RNLI and it astounds me how many people seem to be unaware of how dangerous the sea can be, especially in bad weather.

I hope that man thanked you and doesn't behave so recklessly again in the future. So glad you were there.

Port1aCastis · 09/01/2026 18:19

BBC news just reported that miraculously there were few injuries last night because people had heeded the red warnings, well I for one never want that government text red alert again but it has served its purpose.
Sadly a legion of numpties were out and were dealt with.
Thanks to the many Mners who supported me last night you are all brilliant.

The power cut is now over but the worst thing was we lost internet too so phones didnt work at all. Had we needed any emergency help how could we get it . No landlines now.
Its been very cold but we are through it now.

Have you not got old school mobile phone signal?

No - strangely there was nothing . First time we have had that happen but we have no idea why . 3 phones fully charged and none worked at all overnight . The messages I had written were received around 4 pm today.

CornishTiger · 09/01/2026 20:42

Last night was hell! Early power cut here and restored this morning but intermittent breaks still.

So much damage everywhere. The amount of huge huge trees down - on roads, houses obliterated, power lines exploding, no mobile signal at times , some homes without water as treatment centre affected.

Schools closed or delayed opening for second time this week. No chilled or freezer foods in main supermarkets.

It’s been exhausting! And that’s all of top of working in a key role experiencing our own challenges cos of the weather.

JurgenKloppsTeeth · 09/01/2026 22:17

I just read that St Michael’s Mount lost 80% of its trees 😞 Friends in Newquay and Penzance lost roof tiles, greenhouses and all sorts. I’m in a dip so most of it went overhead but I did lose various bins. The lights were flickering a lot so I’m surprised to still have electricity. Quite a few workmates have no power and not likely to before Sunday.

They're switching all those off. No more 3G

But there's 4G! I still get mobile phone signal without Internet, although I concede that some people are in signal blackspots, especially rurally. Happily scrolled through the power cut on Thursday night.

I guess it's entirely possible that a mobile phone mast was damaged.
