Anyone preparing for a lot of snow tomorrow?

We're in Leicestershire and it looks like we're due quite a bit.

East Staffs checking in again.
The forecast of sleet (by both the Met Office and BBC) was and still is totally wrong as 2” of snow has fallen since 7.30pm and is still coming down thick and fast.

Edited

I'm in the NE and met office has been insistent that we're above freezing all day yet it only crept above zero for the first time today about an hour ago.

Sleety rain falling right now, not particularly heavy, and the pavements look like a mix of sparkly and glassy.

It looks tight over the channel. 😯

Forest of Dean, Heavy rain earlier which is easing off a bit now. We are right on the edge of the amber zone. No snow as yet, although we had some earlier in the week. Thinking of everyone in Cornwall and the Channel Islands and hoping you all stay safe.

NotTerfNorCis · 08/01/2026 22:48

Derbyshire. Light snow here, looks like it's melting under soft rain already.

We’ve been told here (Warwickshire) school closed but we have heavy rain…

Which part of Warwick? I'm near Leamington and my kids school is looking to be open so far!

TubeScreamer · 08/01/2026 22:51

After an hour of light snow that didn’t settle, we now have very heavy rain in my bit of Leicestershire.

Argh. We got the first wave of snow in Norfolk and I’m glad to see the back of it. Kids got an extra week off due to flooding and a broken boiler at school. I need them to go back now!

If they are off anymore they will have to make the time back in summer!! 😂😂

My thoughts are with the people of Cornwall with the red warning in place. I hope this (the most beautiful part of England in my opinion) is not too badly battered and that people are able to make themselves safe.

DH has just read of 4 metre waves in Coverack, we are struggling to imagine this as it's always so calm and tranquil when we visit in summer.

I'm up north (England) and it looks like we are getting off relatively lightly for once with yellow snow warning.

My friend in Cornwall lost power about an hour and a half ago. I am in Surrey and its a bit wet.

CatWithThreeLegs · 08/01/2026 22:57

Just been watching our local wave cam on YouTube and seeing huge waves breaching the promenade. Apparently it's started to flood the main road, which may close if it gets much worse.

Sheree101 · 08/01/2026 23:10

I’m in Scotland and I can tell u iv never seen anything like it. It’s been horrendous to say the least. People getting cut off from everything, power out, crashes and roads closed everywhere, cars stuck and dumped everywhere, no bread and milk in shops. Actually shops bare. Temperatures of -14. It’s been awful. I’m not sure if England is to get it as bad as what we have had. I can say though the one good thing we have had is community spirt. Everyone has been helping each other out. People pushing cars and (attempting to) clear each others driveways but it just kept coming down thick and fast. The snowflakes were massive! As soon as a path was cleared it was snowed under again. We are now left with thick black ice everywhere

AliceandOscar · 08/01/2026 23:12

So odd, in North Hampshire and we had heavy rain earlier, now there is nothing, no wind, no rain completely calm and totally against the weather forecast.

Same here in Leicester

Sheree101 · 08/01/2026 23:15

This is when it first began then it got worse. Couldn’t see a thing when driving in a blizzard. Dusk carriageway's down to one lane as they were so covered in snow the whole road was not visable .

I always smile when schools close as my dad was a head teacher and he never closed his school. On very cold days he used to say they would have a longer assembly and if the children sang their hearts out they would feel warm.

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 08/01/2026 23:25

North wales. Been snowing the last few hours. I didn’t think it would stick after all the rain but it definitely has. It’ll be a snow day for the kids tomorrow for sure. Worried about DH who is insisting on going to work but I’m not sure it’ll be safe.

hope all those in the red area are safe. Sounds so scary.

It’s 7 degrees here in SE UK, huge amounts of rain, 11.30pm.

can’t believe the difference in temperature

It’s more about people getting there and back safely

We have this nonsense multiple times a year. A storm comes and goes. It’s never devastating. It’s England ffs not a hurricane prone exotic island.

Are our weather events as bad or as frequent as those other countries suffer? Of course not, but when days like today happen it's not nothing either.

I am in south-west Leics and have just struggled to drive home from an ill-advised outing, a distance of only a few miles, on roads covered in snow and ice. I was driving extremely slowly and carefully but still skidded several times, anyone going much faster would really have been in trouble. Over a very short distance I saw abandoned cars, stranded people, and at one point a smashed car that had clearly been involved in some kind of collision, and I'm not just talking about the odd dent here.

Friends driving home from the same event have reported seeing the same things, plus in one instance a car slipping down a hill because its tyres weren't able to grip. There will have been accidents this evening, I hope no one has been injured but it wouldn't surprise me if they had been, unfortunately. I'm counting my blessings to have got home without damage to either my car or myself and have definitely learnt my lesson about ignoring weather warnings.

Personally, though, I think it's pretty crass to dismiss weather events like today's as 'nonsense' merely because they don't happen with the frequency or severity experienced in other countries.

MO0N · 08/01/2026 23:41

I'm on the south coast, lots of rain & quite windy.
Stay safe everyone🙏🤍

LakieLady · 08/01/2026 23:45

PigletJohn · 08/01/2026 21:54

I'm on the South Coast and it looks like missing me. Our forecast is 25mph winds gusting to 40.

I'm in E Sussex, approx 7 miles from the coast. We have a yellow warning for wind from 2am, but the wind is already pretty bad (my house is in quite an exposed position at the top of a hill) and it's raining very hard.

I'm putting ear plugs in when I go to bed in the hope of sleeping through it, and taking a torch just in case the power goes off. I slept through the hurricane in '87, so hopefully will do the same.

I really feel for everyone where there's snow and very high winds. Hope you all stay safe.

There was a tremendously heavy burst of rain in my part of Sussex for a few minutes earlier. It was pouring down the windows like a waterfall.

It only lasted a few minutes, but it was quite something.

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 08/01/2026 23:53

North East Somerset here, so much rain today that many of the local roads have flooded.
We're had a few flakes of snow, in drizzle, and part of our back guttering has come unclipped. Can't do anything about it now.

Temp has dropped 7°C in the last 3 hours, it's 1°C now, but apparently feels like -5°C with the wind chill. 45mph gusts of wind, the street lights are wobbling significantly.

However, lots of bread, milk and loo roll left in the shops.

Stay safe all.

Whereabouts are you? Birmingham airport has closed due to the snow and flights out cancelled with arrivals diverted. I doubt they do that lightly.
