Anyone preparing for a lot of snow tomorrow?

We're in Leicestershire and it looks like we're due quite a bit.

My part of Staffordshire had heavy snow overnight and trees down. Neighbours unable to get off their driveways as too slippy. Local reports of poor road conditions and people stuck on M42 for hours.
it must be puzzling if you’ve no snow to wonder what the fuss is yet it’s real for some of us

We ended up with quite a bit of snow but have had no update from school since late last night. Which is irrationally annoying me. I'm guessing no news means they are open but a quick message would have been useful.

I guess they will indeed be recieving lots of calls especially as their last message to us said they would update us in the morning. Just seems daft to not just put out a message and instead expect the poor office staff to deal with multiple phone calls.

Hope you sort the Welly problem.

You do realise that trains move ? 🙄

I'm confused. What is the point you are trying to make? I'm talking about a local train service that doesn't cover a great distance.

We have a little snow, yet all the morning trains have been cancelled. What an over reaction.

This country seems to be getting more and more risk averse.

Any excuse for train drivers not to work yet they are continually demanding more money

Snow and ice often affects the signalling system because the switches don't work, and ice on rails makes it dangerous and can lead to derailments.

And while there might only be "a little snow" where you are, further up or down the line it may be considerably worse.

If you look on your council website there’s usually a school closures page that lists all emergency closures on it

Ours just says check your individual schools website or social media. I know the lists used to be quite common but it doesn't seem to be a thing here any more. Have just had a message to say they are open though, guess they got fed up of all the calls. 😅

It's above freezing here and the couple of inches of snow we have is melting, and our trains have run in much colder, snowier weather than this.

CeeJay81 · 09/01/2026 08:35

School is closed here but we have no snow at all. The western boundary of the storm was def out.

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 09/01/2026 08:49

We have snow but schools are open because the main roads are fine. It’s quite slushy. My kids are gutted- when they bed, it was snowing like crazy so they were convinced they had a snow day (as was I!)

ThursdayLastWeek · 09/01/2026 08:54

How are the Cornish faring today?
I live in a valley so have been protected from the very worst gusts mid- Cornwall.
Local secondary closed today though, DS delighted!

It does seem very localised though. I am in the midlands where we had plenty of snow last night, and had it last weekend too. Yet I know places not too far away where there has been no snow at all, both last night and last weekend. I thought they were making a big fuss yesterday when they were stopping evening trains as our forecast appeared to be sleet, but they seemed to have made the right decision. Airport was closed too.

NeartoNewquay · 09/01/2026 09:16

@ThursdayLastWeek - we seem to have fared pretty well apart from our chickens losing half their house! Quite a few trees down and my DDs friend had a tree through their ceiling. My 85 yr old mum has no power and they've said could be without it until Sunday so be going over to her if roads are passable which is questionable.

DD and I got up at 6.45 and then she saw that Truro college was not opening. She said angrily - "I've just put my mascara on!!" and went back to bed (without taking it off!).🤣

Tryonemoretime · 09/01/2026 09:23

Still no snow, but a little wind is breathing on our trees.

SunnyViper · 09/01/2026 09:24

We had about 5 inches but then it began raining around 2am and there isn’t much left this morning. All the roads are clear.

Tryonemoretime · 09/01/2026 10:24

Best wishes to all who are affected by this weather. Schools have to close if staff can't get in, and many teachers don't live within walking distance of their schools. Also thinking of medical staff who can't get in to hospitals, surgeries and dental practices etc. Snow and stormy weather might be fun or interesting for some of us - but in this country, such weather can have a huge and detrimental effect on others.

zurigo · 09/01/2026 10:28

West Herts and no snow at all. We were on the very southern edge of the yellow snow warning, so I hoped we wouldn't get much/any and we haven't. Bit of sleet, but we haven't even had heavy rain. Commiserations to all who've had a heavy dose of rain, wind and snow.

leporello · 09/01/2026 10:42

Looks like we got off lightly here in coastal Dorset, although I did just spend 10 minutes putting rubbish back into an overturned bin 🤢. Hope you're all over the worst, must admit I was relieved when @Port1aCastisposted later on after saying how she was spending her evening. Round of applause from me!

LemaxObsessive · 09/01/2026 10:42

Not a flake of snow at all so far this winter, no wind last night just very cold

RanchRat · 09/01/2026 10:47

We have had some snow in S.W. Sheffield, about 4 - 6 inches, but its dry now, don't know if there will be any more. It has been very exciting for the dog.
