DS will only wear shorts

Does anybody else have one of these? He is determined to wear shorts throughout the whole year. He insists that he is not cold (he is).

Has anyone found any solutions?

No, I have a 62 year old father who does though 🤣 whatever the weather, shorts.

ButWhysTheRumGone · 06/01/2026 20:52

Our school refused to let the children outing the show yesterday at break because many were in shorts and therefore “not appropriately dressed for the weather”. An email went home yesterday to say they must be wearing appropriate clothing today so they could go outside at break. At home time one of the teachers pulled up a parent about his child being in shorts again. He said he thought appropriate clothing meant a hat and gloves 🙄 Lots of boys challenge themselves to go all year wearing shorts. This is primary school btw.

Let him wear shorts!

My 30 year old nephew always wears shorts. Even in the snow. It was -4 yesterday and I was out in jogging bottoms and a tshirt. Some people just don’t feel the cold.

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 06/01/2026 21:22

Oh yes my son struggled starting secondary in September for this exact reason - he’d never (ever) worn real trousers, only shorts and if I insisted, joggers. It took until this month for him not to mention it repeatedly how much he hates school uniform trousers. His knees however are doing much better.

eurotravel · 06/01/2026 21:25

Quite common

MCF86 · 06/01/2026 21:27

Mine caved in the end around the end of November when we had a really biting cold wind going on, despite initially saying he was wearing shorts until next Christmas (so over a year at the time)! I was surprised he didn't go back to shorts when it got a bit milder again during December, but not unhappy 😆

I just always made sure there were some trousers in his bag - when he did crack, he changed into them at lunch time so I was glad I did!

Libre2 · 06/01/2026 21:34

So funny, DS (now 17) never wore trousers to primary school. I remember him going to school in shorts during the “Beast from the East” (remember that winter?) and packing him a pair of trousers and hopefully saying “change into trousers if you want to play out in the snow”. He has barely worn shorts since primary other than for the gym. I was quite sad when he went into long trousers.

Bourneo · 06/01/2026 21:53

Yep mine is like this. He's nearly 10, I gave up last year asking him to wear trousers. He'll have to in high school, but for now he says he'd rather be a normal temperature inside and cold for half hour on yard than boiling all day. He just runs hot 🤷‍♀️

tallbirduk · 06/01/2026 21:55

Yep, same as others, my eldest put shorts on at Easter in year 1 and that was it, no trousers through the rest of primary.

I was really worried about secondary, even squared it so he could wear shorts, and he did - briefly - but then he switched to trousers and now (aged 17) he needs cajoling into shorts even when it’s boiling😂

Funny things these kids.

m00rfarm · 06/01/2026 21:56

Mine had to wear shorts up to the age of 9 throughout the winter and summer. He often wears shorts in the winter now (aged 24) if he is working from home.

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 06/01/2026 21:56

Lots of these round where we live, DS has a mate who he has never seen in trousers. He refers to it as "having PE teacher vibes" 😂

Purplepepsi · 06/01/2026 21:57

12 year old still in shorts. Was minus 2 this morning! He does at least wear a warm coat though!

PepsiBook · 06/01/2026 21:58

My eldest did this for about 2 years. Then realised how silly he was!
My third child is now going through the same thing. She doesn't mind school trousers, but wears shorts other than that.

Ihaveaskedyouthrice · 06/01/2026 22:02

Yep, my 8 year old son is the same. Last time he wore pants was end of January (he was going to a football match and it was so cold we said he couldn't go unless he wore pants).

It doesn't bother me, if he's cold enough he'll wear pants. He's gone to bed tonight in a pair of boxer shorts whereas his 2 siblings are in fleece pyjamas.

StasisMom · 06/01/2026 22:04

I promise my DS and friends all wore shorts all year round, we live in the NW. He refused trousers and was honestly fine.

You need a slightly colder climate to stop boys turning into shorts boys, who then turn into shorts men.

I live in Iceland and the winters are cold enough that shorts boys just can't exist. They all learn to wear trousers and consequently no shorts men.

In London you can safely let him get on with it.

This is just brilliant.

Boys become shorts boys.
Shorts boys become shorts men.
But in Iceland, shorts boys don’t exist.

is that a haiku?

My DS is still in shorts every day.

MannersAreAll · 06/01/2026 22:36

Don't worry about it. If he gets excessively cold he'll do something about it.

DS1 was like this. People told me not to worry and he'd grow out of it. He's now a gardener and still wears shorts all year round. He has always said shorts are warmer than wet trousers.

The only time I've seen him in trousers in the last few years has been at two weddings where he was in the wedding party. Even then he swapped to shorts later at night at one of them.

tarheelbaby · 06/01/2026 22:38

As a teen and pre-teen, I remember wondering what was wrong with adults that they were cold all the time. Now I wear a cardigan/pullover + scarf most days. Your DS may grow into it.

That said, even here in the sunny south, this week it's been jolly cold - single digits in the daytime and minus digits overnight but I have seen several people in shorts.

Pessismistic · 06/01/2026 22:39

Hi op it’s fine for him to wear shorts look how many girls wear skirts ladies the same and dresses not everyone likes tights or pants.

TheWelshposter · 06/01/2026 22:43

My 9 year old is the same and has been for a few years. He will also only wear short pyjamas. No Christmas fluffy pjs for him....he looks like he's always on summer holidays. I feel your pain. He will hardly ever wear a coat either.

Regulus · 06/01/2026 22:51

Our whole academy from reception to Y13 allow shorts and about 10% wear them all year.

It was funny seeing the lads with a blazer and tie and smart shoes and shorts when we first allowed it but the boys (and girls) love it.

Don't worry about it.

853ax · 06/01/2026 23:43

It very popular here for boys to wear only shorts.
School are often sending out messages saying to wear long trousers over winter.
They don't feel cold on legs why not leave him to it. But the more used to it they get the more annoying long trousers are.

Mossstitch · 06/01/2026 23:52

I know an 80,year old that wears shorts all year around........only time I've seen him in trousers was a wedding🤣
