DS will only wear shorts

Does anybody else have one of these? He is determined to wear shorts throughout the whole year. He insists that he is not cold (he is).

Has anyone found any solutions?

How old?
Toddler - put tights underneath.
Primary age kid - long socks or leg warmers.
Teen - let him be cold.

wewearshortshorts · 06/01/2026 09:17

He is 8.

He is 8.

Go for long socks then.
(my daughter would be blue and still insist she "wasn't cold" 🙄)

When I was growing up, boys wore shorts until they went to senior school and not always then. He will be fine.

redskydelight · 06/01/2026 09:21

If he says he's not cold then just let him get on with it.

Either he'll get cold and realise he needs to wear something different, or he'll decide that he prefers to be cold over wearing trousers.
(I'd check if it's a sensory issue and different trousers might be ok).

wewearshortshorts · 06/01/2026 09:21

Yes. Same here. My brothers always wore shorts at primary. But nobody else is doing this!

My son tolerated a base layer with shorts over the top.

However he didnt go to school aged 8 so not sure how that would go down in a uniform situation.

xterde · 06/01/2026 09:22

He will be cold but he will be ok, lots of boys at my dc school still wearing shorts

wewearshortshorts · 06/01/2026 09:22

Like longjohn’s underneath your shorts?

Mine was like this, it's fine. Didn't carry on after primary school.

HelpMeGetThrough · 06/01/2026 09:23

Welcome to our world with the youngest.

Reception/Primary: shorts all the time.
Secondary: Pissed him off as had to wear trousers, out of school, shorts.
College:Shorts 24/7.

Hes now in first year of Uni doing a Teacher Training Degree for Secondary Sports, so is in shorts all the time 24/7.

I almost shit myself the other day as he had tracksuit bottoms on, as it was “a bit cold”. Yes mate, it’s minus bloody 2!!!

BlueRaincoat1 · 06/01/2026 09:24

Both my boys (10 and 7) have gone to school in shorts today. One was in shorts yesterday out and about. They just love shorts. I provide trousers and advise wearing them. After that I leave them to it, I gave up this battle ages ago. The older one has started wearing jeans recently. They occasionally wear tracksuit bottoms. But usually shorts!

wewearshortshorts · 06/01/2026 09:24

I guess it’s just the thing that he does. He won’t be allowed to at secondary, but I guess that is a way off.

Some boys never grow out of all year shorts even when they are adults. Including in snow. Northerners/Scots in my experience are particularly prone to this habit especially if they are down south where it's "boiling".

DS believes that he is Northern (but we live in London and always have done).

🤣This also happens. My youngest identifies as being from Yorkshire. He isn't.

Elbowpatch · 06/01/2026 09:30

He will be fine. Not that long ago all boys wore shorts year round into their teens.

Bohemond23 · 06/01/2026 09:35

Quite normal at our school. My Y6 son has never worn trousers to school. It's a badge of honour. At the weekend he will wear football skins under his football shorts but that's all.

Needmorelego · 06/01/2026 09:38

@wewearshortshorts I am in London and just before Christmas I saw a bloke out and about in shorts and flip flops 😂

Georgiepud · 06/01/2026 09:42

Yes, I'll be scraping the frost off my youngest's legs at this rate. He's 10.

His older brother at secondary changes into shorts and flip flops the minute school is out. They must both be hot blooded.

LadyDanburysHat · 06/01/2026 09:43

Both of my DSes only wore shorts in primary school. I didn't buy trousers as they refused to wear them. We live in Scotland and have some pretty chilly winters. They were fine.

Snow boots and shorts is an odd look, but they wore them.

I think many adults forget that children have a higher metabolism and don't feel cold the same way we do.

teatimefortiger · 06/01/2026 09:52

My 10year old has gone to school wearing shorts, I’ve given up with the argument to be honest. He doesn’t even own trousers or tracksuit bottoms anymore, just a few pairs of under armour egos which he can wear under shorts if he ever decides he is cold.

so what if nobody else is doing it?
He is not going to die of hypothermia if you keep an eye on him, let him be cold.

Our senior allows shorts but it just wasn’t cool to do it so mine stopped pretty quick.

I let my kids decide when they wanted to wear shorts but also told them if it was 5 degrees or lower it would be trousers due to risk of frostbite (yes I know you have to be in minus degree weather). So we checked the temp through the winter and the decision was pre made.
