DS will only wear shorts

Does anybody else have one of these? He is determined to wear shorts throughout the whole year. He insists that he is not cold (he is).

Has anyone found any solutions?

Our school bans shorts from Halloween until after February half term! 😁

AmyDuPlantier · 06/01/2026 12:25

My son is wearing his shorts to secondary today, but we’re in Scotland where things are not as strictly bonkers over uniform.

MatchaTea1 · 06/01/2026 12:45

My 8 year old has not worn long trousers for about 3 years now, some kids just don't like trousers. He bundles up with fleeces and hoodies on top and doesn't seem to get cold.

My son wears shorts 365 days a year. Will not entertain the idea of pants. I used to get really cross with him but I’ve given up. He insists he isn’t cold and hates pants. So I just let him 🤷‍♀️

Time2beme · 06/01/2026 17:47

My son is 12 and has worn shorts year round apart from ice skating for all his life.

Hercisback1 · 06/01/2026 17:50

I have one of these. He occasionally wears under armour (leggings type training/running things) but 99% of the time wears shorts, bare legs and he's fine.

spiderlight · 06/01/2026 17:55

Perhaps he's destined to become a postman.

Tanefan · 06/01/2026 17:57

Secondary school teacher here, there are a few boys still in year 9 even that only wear shorts all year round, including this week! Their parents must have got to the point where they just left them to it and I don’t blame them. It won’t kill them.

linsey2581 · 06/01/2026 18:27

My 23 year old son in the house wears shorts no t shirt and 1 sock.
when questioned why he only has 1 sock he answers with well the other one has a hole in it. He is ASD so it’s a very logical and honest answer. I have no solutions though 🤣

ColdWaterDipper · 06/01/2026 18:27

Yes I have a 12 year old who only wears shorts and a 14 year old who primarily wears shorts outside of school (but the older one will wear trousers if we insist). The 12 year old hs worn shorts year round since he was about 6, we just let him get on with it - the only rule is that he can’t moan about having cold legs if he has chosen to wear shorts! He has to wear them at school anyway, so I suppose he’s just used to it. I do enforce trouser-wearing when we go skiing but otherwise I leave him to it. My 14 year old will often choose to wear shorts (has to wear trousers for school), but will listen to sense sometimes.

RunningOnEmptyLegs · 06/01/2026 18:28

Leave him to it 😊

MargaretThursday · 06/01/2026 18:36

Same with ds.

He's 18yo.

He worse shorts all through school (school introduced shorts into their uniform when he arrived- standard state comp). He was normally the oldest pupil in shorts, and often the only pupil in shorts, but to him being comfortable was more important than not standing out.

He's gone off to uni with shorts and one pair of trousers because he needed full blacks for his course.

He only really wears trousers if he has to or for a costume on stage.

He hasn't owned a coat in 6 years either, after the previous two I bought were unworn before he grew out of them.

Mumofoneandone · 06/01/2026 18:42

My son is 8 and has been insisting on wearing shorts for school. ( School is way overheated which might be some of the issue!) I accepted it before Christmas and made sure his body was well layered up but with the snow and cold now, I've insisted on trousers. He's actually been fine with it.
If he hadn't been, I would probably have got long socks and possibly some tight cycling shorts underneath the shorts, so he was a bit warmer.....

disappearingfish · 06/01/2026 18:46

He’s absolutely fine. You don’t lose much heat through your legs. Hats, gloves and coats are more important.

LemograssLollipop · 06/01/2026 18:47

wewearshortshorts · 06/01/2026 09:22

Like longjohn’s underneath your shorts?

You can buy football leggings for boys in sports shops and they have matching long sleeve tops to wear underneath t shirts. It's an extra layer but not sure how much warmer. Better than bare legs though.
We have the shorts standoff with my 7 year old too.

DS believes that he is Northern (but we live in London and always have done).

Well we are northern and ds is also like this. He was appalled by the no shorts rule at high school but has no choice. It was -8 yesterday and he went to his evening swimming lesson in shorts. One local primary has a no trousers rule. The boys all have to wear shirts and long socks in winter. Short socks in summer. The head when looked around said the bottom of trousers get wet in bad weather as they catch the floor and they are then sat in soggy clothes all day.

Ajakka · 06/01/2026 18:55

I’m a shorts women, I was out in them and wellies shovelling the snow earlier! I’d just let him be, get him some thick socks to keep his feet warm

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 06/01/2026 18:57

fluffiphlox · 06/01/2026 09:19

When I was growing up, boys wore shorts until they went to senior school and not always then. He will be fine.

Snap. Grazed knees are cheaper than a new pair of trousers, as my gran would have said. 😂

Bitzee · 06/01/2026 19:06

Other than looking like he’s stuck in the 1950s he’ll be fine. There’s a very traditional school near me that still doesn’t have trousers for boys as a uniform option, only shorts. My DC’s school didn’t allow them when DD was in reception but relaxed and added a trouser option before DS started under the guise of modernising the uniform along with ditching the hats.

blankcanvas3 · 06/01/2026 19:19

Can’t remember the last time I saw my 17 year old in trousers, so no suggestions from me as he’s been like this since he was about 5! He’s never died of hypothermia if that helps.

DidIForgetPEAgain · 06/01/2026 19:21

I have the same, when it’s really cold I’ve convinced him to wear long thermals under the shorts 🤷🏼‍♀️

teraculum29 · 06/01/2026 19:32

Needmorelego · 06/01/2026 09:19

Go for long socks then.
(my daughter would be blue and still insist she "wasn't cold" 🙄)

my daughter is almost 11 she always insist she's not cold.

Our boiler has broken down, so no heating for few days now, and she still wears t-shirt and leggings when I need to wear layers.

The other day I was collecting her from skateboarding club, ( all other children were wearing coats, or jumpers, my Dd only t-shirt and shorts). She had long trousers in her bag.

comealongdobbeh · 06/01/2026 19:33

2 boys in my son’s class (Y6) wear shorts every single day. Had them on today in -4 weather

OutieModeOn · 06/01/2026 19:36

Cumbria here. DS has lived in shorts since he was old enough to say what he would wear. He's now a teenager and has to wear trousers for school but the rest of the time his legs are out. Including this week where it has been -7 at times.

He has survived so far!

BogRollBOGOF · 06/01/2026 20:12

It's a decade since I gave up fighting and buying more than a token pair of stunt trousers. Teen DS hasn't had hypothermia yet.

Alas no secondary around here has shorts as uniform so we try to get the baggiest trousers that can stay up on his tiny waist so his knees can "breathe".
He takes school trousers on his DoE expeditions for tick box purposes and hasn't owned any non-school trousers for years.

He wore shorts to school every day from y1 to y6. I have photos pulling him to school on a sledge with his knees breathing above his long socks during The Beast From The East Grin
