DS will only wear shorts

Does anybody else have one of these? He is determined to wear shorts throughout the whole year. He insists that he is not cold (he is).

Has anyone found any solutions?

My eldest was the same. Once he got to year 5, I gave up insisting and he wore shorts all year to school. He’s in high school now and they don’t wear shorts unless it’s boiling so he’s finally got warm legs

TwooooDoooozenRoses · 06/01/2026 10:01

I don’t think it particularly matters does it? He’ll be cold or not, but he certainly won’t die from it! He’ll change his tune if he is too cold.
My husband lives in shorts all year round and so does my son.. which is handy because his school uniform is shorts all year round, with long socks!

Mikart · 06/01/2026 10:03

Ds always wore shorts. My brother did in the 50s. Shorts and wellington boots

The regular postman wears short all year around. I asked him about it last time we had snow, he said only his hands get cold and if his legs get wet they just dry off but trousers would have him shivering if they got wet.

My mother claims I must be part Viking because of my tolerance to cold. I'm not sure how that was supposed to work if my parents were not Viking descendants too.

I cracked yesterday and put the heating on, forgot I'd done that when I went to bed, I woke up covered in sweat.

thisisthebiscuit · 06/01/2026 10:08

Some people never grow out of it…my DH still wears shorts years round and apparently doesn’t feel the cold!

AmyDuPlantier · 06/01/2026 10:09

Shorts seems to be the thing just now. It’s snowing here and my son went off in shorts, and plenty of boys walking to school in them.

I don’t care 🤷‍♀️ They understand cold, if they’re fine with it then crack on. Little weirdos 🤣

otherthoughtssareavailable · 06/01/2026 10:16

DS has always been like this. Wore shorts all year through primary through choice, wasn't happy that seniors didn't allow shorts, chooses to wear them 90% of the time when not at school (he's 16 now). Even if he does put some joggers/trousers on (normally under duress that it really is quite cold or shorts are not appropriate attire for an event) then he'll still only have a short-sleeve tee/shirt. We nicknamed him 'radiator boy' when he was a kid - always warm - he does NOT get it from me!

sesquipedalian · 06/01/2026 10:19

OP, he’ll be fine. My DS wore shorts until he was in year 6. He lived to tell the tale! He had a warm duffel coat and long socks - he was fine!

DS believes that he is Northern (but we live in London and always have done).

ha, if he was a real northerner, he'd be going barefoot, not wearing shoes like a soft southerner.

I guess it’s just the thing that he does. He won’t be allowed to at secondary, but I guess that is a way off.

leave him to it. His body - if he gets cold that's his issue. Another thing is if he isn't adhering to a school uniform/dress code which is sounds like he is.
You do you. I personally think he is bonkers and am wearing 5 layers but I saw a man walking his dog earlier in shorts and a puffa jacket and bobble hat. To each their own.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 06/01/2026 11:06

My son was the same ... still is mostly abd he's 40!

wewearshortshorts · 06/01/2026 09:22

Like longjohn’s underneath your shorts?

Well, more like what footballers wear to train.

Yuja · 06/01/2026 11:16

My 10 year old DS is like this. I gave up worrying about it a couple of years ago and he’s still alive!

RandomUsernameHere · 06/01/2026 11:17

DS wore shorts all year round in primary. He’s in secondary now and they’re not allowed to wear shorts, otherwise he’d probably be wearing them today!

Placestogo · 06/01/2026 11:21

My son was the same. Now 13 he wears jogging bottoms and no shorts… even in summer!!!!
he didnt want to wear a coat either but this year he gave in and now is really hapoy about it. He draws a line at wearing anything else but a t-shirt under his coat though!
i wouldnt be surprised if someone told me my DS had sensory issues… (he does have (diagnosed) adhd and perhaps a sprinkle of asd)

my 15yo wears tracksuit bottom and a hoodie whatever the weather…. Snow, ice, rain, heat wave, it doesnt matter… i did but him a coat in November so if school makes a social care referral because he has frozen to death on the playground, i’ll have my own back covered (pun intended). Of course the coat is still unused…

i am probably saving a lot of money without realising it!! I would probably be a lot poorer if i had girls!

Mexicansky · 06/01/2026 11:23

My son is 8 as well, yesterday morning it was -8 here and he went to school in shorts
last school year he wore shorts every day even with his wellies in the snow.
he doesn’t actually have any school trousers.
he is always warm and very rarely says he is cold.
I worried but figured he would say if he was cold.

tinyspiny · 06/01/2026 11:26

My husband wears shorts all year unless he’s going into work ( occasional) or going somewhere where they wouldn’t be appropriate and he is in his mid 60s .

Netcurtainnelly · 06/01/2026 11:48

Shorts Rock.

Needmorelego · 06/01/2026 11:57

I literally just saw a lad of about 10 wearing big fleece coat, thick gloves and a kind of fleece hat/balaclava combo thing - with shorts on.
Footy shorts too so they are that thin material.
It really made me smile having read this thread 😂

HelpMeGetThrough · 06/01/2026 09:23

Welcome to our world with the youngest.

Reception/Primary: shorts all the time.
Secondary: Pissed him off as had to wear trousers, out of school, shorts.
College:Shorts 24/7.

Hes now in first year of Uni doing a Teacher Training Degree for Secondary Sports, so is in shorts all the time 24/7.

I almost shit myself the other day as he had tracksuit bottoms on, as it was “a bit cold”. Yes mate, it’s minus bloody 2!!!

I was going to post that OP son is destined to a PE teacher!

GoldDuster · 06/01/2026 12:00

It's an end of primary phase, not sure what's behind it but the 365 shorts era didn't last long. The worst outcome will be chillblains on his knees and a life lesson.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 06/01/2026 12:00

Yep! my 11 year old will only wear shorts for school. I've given up fighting about it and we compromise on him wearing joggers over his shorts when it snows and he takes them off when he gets to school.

He goes to high school next year so he'll have no choice but to wear trousers then!

DrowningInThings · 06/01/2026 12:03

We had the rule if it was below 5 degrees when he left the house in the morning he had to wear trousers. He wore shorts to secondary, but switched to trousers pretty quickly!

thornbury · 06/01/2026 12:04

My dad is 80. He only wears trousers to go out for dinner, otherwise shorts.

Puffinshop · 06/01/2026 12:05

You need a slightly colder climate to stop boys turning into shorts boys, who then turn into shorts men.

I live in Iceland and the winters are cold enough that shorts boys just can't exist. They all learn to wear trousers and consequently no shorts men.

In London you can safely let him get on with it.
