Mumsnetters voting Reform

Mumsnet mothers have always leaned Labour. Now Reform is ahead

I'm slightly startled by this. I'm a centrist, slightly more right leaning perhaps but frankly I'm open to any government who will get a firm grip on the public finances and go about growing the economy in a sustainable way. My impression of this site is that it's definitely more left leaning and and Reform enthusiasts tend to get shouted down. Personally, I think we should be talking about them a lot more as it's highly likely they will form part of the next government.

My impression is that they are promising the earth but don't have people with the necessary skill set to make that happen. I really worry that they will get voted in and find out that they can't fix all the problems within 18 months, leading to yet more disillusionment amongst voters.

Rising support for Nigel Farage’s party — if not the man himself — may worry the government

I am not sure official 2026 manifestos have been publushed, to be fair. But Plaid, Welsh Labour, Welsh Tories etc. all have set out the direction of travel on their websites. For example.

The parties took part in a debate a few days ago. Reform refused to attend.

I will amend my statement to:

Farage has yet to announce candidates and policies and refused to take part in a debate. Which speaks volumes.

Given candidate registration hasn't even opened yet you want to amend that bit too. You Labour fans girls really need to get your facts sorted.

I disagree and polling shows many do too. On personal ratings she’s going up past the men.

The pale, male, stale looks tired.

Yet Reform is ahead in the polls?

EasternStandard · 06/01/2026 11:46

Starmer in particular embodies pale, male, stale, you can see it at PMQs where Kemi flattens him. Not many think Starmer does well anymore.

The media request thread is interesting, Labour / left posters losing it at mnhq. It’s really not their site to do that about, it’s Justine’s, but BlueSky is available.

You misunderstand me. I'm generally a supporter of Badenoch. But she's undoubtedly a function of the Cameron/Gove period, that was a wholly different era.
It may be that the next Tory PM if there is going to be one, is someone not even in politics today.
Or that the likes of a Katie Lam is the one who picks up the pieces of a crushed Tory party post-2029 GE, and works with Farage in his reverse takeover of the party.
As someone who's a conservative, has a lot of time for Badenoch, is nowhere close to having a deal with me sealed by Farage, my hopes still rest with her.

Kemi has come into her own a bit in recent months - that said Labour are making it increasingly easy for her. "Tax the farmers" oh no "Don't tax the farmer" "Reform benefits" oh no "increase handouts!", "cut winterfuel allowance" oh no "don't cut winterfueld allowance", "I have full confidence if [name any labour Politian" oh no "This weeks firing is [politician just named" and the classic "there will no more tax rises this is fully funded" oh no "we need record tax rises this year as Reeves got her maths wrong" No one has a fucking clue what direction Starmer is going in - I'm not sure even he does.

Fair enough, apologies

I am a PC member and supporter not a Labour "fan girl".

PC has already announced their candidates for all 16 consituencies.

https://www.partyof.wales/2026ymgeiswyrcandidates

Labour has also already announced dozens of candidates.

https://labourlist.org/2025/12/senedd-elections-2026-welsh-labour-party-candidates-who-my-local/

I think there is a website where you can check which candidates have been announced so far in each of the 16 constituencies.

Eta website:

PandoraSocks · 06/01/2026 12:11

I await your apology @Dragonflytamer as I did get my facts straight- I checked and Reform has not yet announced a single candidate. 🙂

Does it matter? Those who are going for PC aren’t going to switch due to candidate announcements and vice versa.

No apology needed. The registration period is no where near ending. PC probably just need all the time they can get given they are about to become even more of an electoral irrelevance than they already are.

1984Now · 06/01/2026 11:33

I always see Kemi as the last of the Cameron/Gove protege generation.
An alternative universe where Cameron scores a big win in 2015, there is no Brexit vote, Trump doesn't win in 2016, Cameron hands over to Gove who wins in 2020/21, and again currently, Badenoch the heir apparent.
She is the last of the 50/50 men/women shortlist Cameron modernizing drive.
So, she's leader now, but in a world that is never going to suit her brand of politics, where Brexit happened, then Trump, then the toxic effects of the left IDentarian culture war, COVID/lockdowns, Ukraine/Gaza.
As we go into a post-liberal world of Trump Putin Xi spheres of influence, British and European elites politicians totally lost, Badenoch seems out of time, both in the wrong era as Tory leader, and nowhere near enough time to create an alternative narrative to vote positively for her.

Edited

Yes she was Gove’s protege. But look, she was consequently over promoted and was ineffectual in government. Unlike Gove she is remorsely unclubbable. Gove is so charming you can throw him into a pit of Guardian readers and he will emerge with a stack of dinner party invites. He charms.

Badenoch is absolutely not that! I like a coalition builder. Anyway, if her policy is to leave the ECHR I would not vote Conservative either.

But I didn't mention the registration period, just that Reform hasn't announced any candidates. Why? Are they struggling to find candidates? Even the Tories have announced a few, and I know they were struggling to find folk.

As for PC becoming an irrelevance, the polls are currently showing that they will win the most votes and the likely outcome in Wales is a PC and Labour coalition.

Do you know much about Welsh politics? Did you see what happened in Caerphilly?

This is old hat. Look on SM and the comments. She’s overtaking the other leaders because she connects with many, not you obviously, but not everyone sees Starmer as statesmanlike and Kemi as what you say. Times are a changing and pdq.

Compare and contrast SM for both if open to views.

To be fair I have no interest whatsoever in Welsh politics. Being the largest party in Wales is akin to being the tallest drawf, interesting but not particularly consequential.

The best thing about Welsh politics is whoever gets in it’ll seriously undermine Starmer’s position. And Labour will look worse.

I think it is win win. If PC win, Wales can focus on independence which reduces the burden the rest of the UK, or if reform can win in one of the leftist leaning areas we are in for an absolute landslide.

bombastix · 06/01/2026 12:42

Blimey. You are very pro nationalism @Dragonflytamer

Very revealing to see the attitude of posters towards Wales.

Why is that an insult? I'm in the UK. I don't mind if Wales get independence which is what PC want isn't it?

bombastix · 06/01/2026 12:43

Mmm. Just revealing full stop. Smells like English nationalism

I'm pro self determination. If people want to vote for independence I think they should be allowed it.
