Mumsnetters voting Reform

Mumsnet mothers have always leaned Labour. Now Reform is ahead

I'm slightly startled by this. I'm a centrist, slightly more right leaning perhaps but frankly I'm open to any government who will get a firm grip on the public finances and go about growing the economy in a sustainable way. My impression of this site is that it's definitely more left leaning and and Reform enthusiasts tend to get shouted down. Personally, I think we should be talking about them a lot more as it's highly likely they will form part of the next government.

My impression is that they are promising the earth but don't have people with the necessary skill set to make that happen. I really worry that they will get voted in and find out that they can't fix all the problems within 18 months, leading to yet more disillusionment amongst voters.

Rising support for Nigel Farage’s party — if not the man himself — may worry the government

Very revealing to see the attitude of posters towards Wales.

Edited

Which posters?

Don’t be coy. I said my view, whatever happens in Wales will damage Labour and Starmer.

bombastix · 06/01/2026 12:44

You sound like an English nationalist to me @Dragonflytamer

And that is the most important thing to you? As I said, very revealing.

As a member of PC, presumably you also support their stance on Welsh independence?

If the Welch want to vote for a pro-independance party, I don't believe the rest of the UK should be begging them to stay. If I was in Wales I wouldn't vote a nationalist party. I wouldn't vote for party that was looking for independence for England. I believe in the UK is better together. But @PandoraSocks has stated they are a member of PC so presumably want to leave the UK - I think they should be free to make the choice.

Rummly · 06/01/2026 12:49

The ECHR is an interesting subject. What do those who believe in it think it offers that domestic law can’t?

bombastix · 06/01/2026 12:49

I don’t think Pandora is a member of PC?

Well yeh, I’m not there I vote in other elections for my area. It’s your vote, you decide. Everything’s ‘revealing’ at this stage. More of the same.

bombastix · 06/01/2026 12:49

I don’t think Pandora is a member of PC?

Yes I am. Quite a new one, admittedly!

Eta: quite a lot of Labour people in Wales have switched to PC, at least for now.

She said she was in an earlier post.

I’m not sure why the accusation is aimed at you, but par for the course on these threads.

bombastix · 06/01/2026 12:52

My mistake, but not my battle then. Nationalism is a curse. In large countries actively dangerous and in small ones apt to damage economies imo.

I always see Kemi as the last of the Cameron/Gove protege generation.
An alternative universe where Cameron scores a big win in 2015, there is no Brexit vote, Trump doesn't win in 2016, Cameron hands over to Gove who wins in 2020/21, and again currently, Badenoch the heir apparent.
She is the last of the 50/50 men/women shortlist Cameron modernizing drive.
So, she's leader now, but in a world that is never going to suit her brand of politics, where Brexit happened, then Trump, then the toxic effects of the left IDentarian culture war, COVID/lockdowns, Ukraine/Gaza.
As we go into a post-liberal world of Trump Putin Xi spheres of influence, British and European elites politicians totally lost, Badenoch seems out of time, both in the wrong era as Tory leader, and nowhere near enough time to create an alternative narrative to vote positively for her.

Good post, sums her up.

She had her chance in Govt to make her mark, funny how she has now changed her tune on a whole host of subjects in just a matter of months.

eg never advocated deportation of ALL X channel migrants inside a week when in power and is yet to say how she would actually do this?

Trying to out Reform, Reform wont work, the Cons, in most polls are still behind Labour.

"Welch"😂 You could at least make the effort to spell Welsh correctly.

bombastix · 06/01/2026 13:01

@Rummly - you raised an interesting point about the ECHR but it’s not about that for me. The point is about intent, given the way the UK parliamentary system works. You do not need to change how the principles of the ECHR operate. In saying that you want to make a domestic legislative provision then what is really being said is “we reserve the right to decide who gets these rights”.

Obviously there will be some who are ideologically content with this idea. I am not.

If think if they are close enough to Reform a significant number of people will decide to stick with the traditional party than go for something new. People inherently don't like changing to something new.

If all else fails pick up on the spelling, punctuation or grammar.

Interesting the accusations are for one poster in particular, and when based on a mistake then withdrawn. It goes to the op’s point.

Not anymore, people, even most ordinary Tory voters, remember their 14 years, many will either not vote or will vote Reform.

Badenoch now blaming Starmer because Trump hasn't rung him and didn't tell him about Venezuela.... i mean really? is she that thick? Trump told almost no one & is not a conventional POTUS.

She has a very low rating, just 20% view her positively (IPSOS & YouGov) thats awful when against a very unpopular PM and Govt.

Both her and her party should really be doing so much better.

Right now I would say I am indy-curious, Bombastix. PC are the best hope to keep Reform out which is why I am supporting them this time around. I am not against independence, but maybe not yet quite fully convinced.

CautiousLurker2 · 06/01/2026 13:14

Hacked off at the misleading headlines on this - 20% of MNrs have indicated that they support Reform… leaving 80% who are not. There is 15-20% support for each of the other parties too) ie, there is bugger all in it, in terms of any one party being out in the lead).

More interesting is the massive uptick in respondees who have no idea who they would vote for. The feeling of being disenfranchised, and the impact this may have on electoral turnout, is really significant.

TellerUlam · 06/01/2026 13:15

One of PC’s manifesto pledges is stated:

So long as Wales remains a part of the UK, Plaid Cymru believes that the role of UK Government in Wales should be to provide enough financial support for our public services and to create the conditions for the kind of sustainable economic growth from which all people and communities can benefit, rather than just those at the top of the tree.

Not entirely sure how they square that with independence….
