Mumsnetters voting Reform

Mumsnet mothers have always leaned Labour. Now Reform is ahead

I'm slightly startled by this. I'm a centrist, slightly more right leaning perhaps but frankly I'm open to any government who will get a firm grip on the public finances and go about growing the economy in a sustainable way. My impression of this site is that it's definitely more left leaning and and Reform enthusiasts tend to get shouted down. Personally, I think we should be talking about them a lot more as it's highly likely they will form part of the next government.

My impression is that they are promising the earth but don't have people with the necessary skill set to make that happen. I really worry that they will get voted in and find out that they can't fix all the problems within 18 months, leading to yet more disillusionment amongst voters.

Rising support for Nigel Farage’s party — if not the man himself — may worry the government

I agree. I’ve been here since the beginning and there has been a massive shift to the right and a (not necessarily related) shift in the class/educational level of mumsnetters.

Agree.

TwotierChristmas · 04/01/2026 08:45

It very left when I came on here

2dogsandabudgie · 04/01/2026 08:48

I think the reason Reform are doing well in the polls is because people are fed up with the two main parties who have failed to do what they promised.

The Lib Dems could have taken advantage of this but they didn't. You hardly hear anything from them at all.

Nigel Farage says all the right things that people want to hear. Whether Reform would be able to deliver on their promises remains to be seen, but I think there's a growing part of society who think he's the answer to this country's problems.

Most people were a lot more left 20 years ago. Almost everyone is pro-NHS, and place value in social support structures when they’re doing very well themselves, that you very much.

When belts start being tightened and people are noticing changes to their living standards, they shift to the right. And ever will it be so.

I don’t think the user demographic has changed, more that women using the site represent what is happening on the ground in the country. There’s a groundswell of deep dissatisfaction that is not understood either by the political classes or the media.

I think the demographic has changed. I’ve been on 20 years.

It was a left wing educated luvvie site. And also quite supportive.

It’s not that anymore.

Kneenightmare · 04/01/2026 08:56

Mumsnet is a hugely influential site and is therefore obviously targeted to try and influence opinions in the UK. You see this a lot with the huge number of anti-Starmer and pro-reform posts. Who benefits from destabilising the UK? Russia, the MAGA lot? Starmer has made lots of mistakes but certainly doesn’t deserve the constant vitriol he gets on this site.

FFSToEverythingSince2020 · 04/01/2026 08:59

The Lib Dems need to wake the fuck up. I want to vote for them, but they need to get off their arses and start employing some political dark arts. I swear, it feels like no one has harnessed actual rhetoric successfully since Blair’s time. I wouldn’t include Farage - he just says a watered-down version of what Trump or Front National say. If the other side is going to lie, then you need to counter that with a bit MORE than the truth. I mean, we’ve seen people fall for absolutely the most ridiculous lies during Brexit; it was like people thought since it was printed on the side of a bus, it must be true?! You can’t rely on people thinking for themselves; Brexit proved they don’t.

Yes, this. I’m somewhat left wing but with these same views would have been regarded as almost right wing here, back then. Not now…

EasternStandard · 04/01/2026 09:01

Just before the GE it was pretty much all Labour so any one not posting along those lines was a ‘bot’ or whatever.

Now it’s more mixed, which is better than one party driving others off. Although you still get a post on nearly every thread from someone Labour the same accusation.

I will never understand how, over the last decade, they (Lib Dems) haven’t taken advantage of the absolutely open goal they’ve been given access to. Mind boggling.

MuyPuy · 04/01/2026 09:01

I think many users are left leaning at their core but have been abandoned by the political left so are not recognised as left leaning. Just look at what happened on Mumsnet when we started discussing the effect of transgenderism on women and children - a butch of left wing women were immediately called bigots by the politicians who they’d voted for their entire lives.

Illjustplayostrich · 04/01/2026 09:02

CurlewKate · 04/01/2026 08:33

Can I suggest you try posting as a Left winger and see what happens….

What I notice is that people with left wing views tend to be a lot more trenchant and firm about their opinion whereas right wingers seem to be more defiant-ie 'I know you don't like it but this is what I think'. Coming at it from a reasonably impartial viewpoint, left wingers seem to find it incomprehensible that someone could disagree with their views and expend a lot less time on open discourse rather than telling people they are wrong.

I think the same can be said on all sides these days. There is very little, practically no, reasoned debate.

A string from the same 5 or 6 posters though, who incessantly call others bigoted while never actually addressing the concern at hand. Basically a micro-study of why Reform are ahead.

Yup this.

Nothing has brought people to the Right like the Left.

MuyPuy · 04/01/2026 09:07

This posts illustrates perfectly why Reform have had such stunning success in such a short time.

It might stun the poster who wrote this to hear that people don’t vote for people or parties who hold them in contempt.

TwotierChristmas · 04/01/2026 09:18

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow
I was more left back then but I did notice much vitriol if anyone posted anything then left thought wrong.
People were not allowed to express options like they can now.

Re support I've had and continue to have endless support here on all manner of topics !

The biggest change I've noted is how hard it is to have fun on here now . There uses to be loads of fun light hearted threads people just went with
Now it's ...this isn't real /troll hands/under a bridge nonsense.

Because there are no single answers only solutions which involve compromise.
Neither left or right want to be the first to concede maybe for fear or being seen weak?

want to stop illegal immigration? Easy ( ignore your commitment to ECHR ) but face the wrath of the EU when it comes to trade and commerce which impacts business’ across the UK, which upsets your voters and triggers a media shitstorm on your party.

I KNOW! It’s annoying as fuck. I’m starting experimental treatment in January, but if I live, I’d like to actually join the party officially and help kick their asses into gear. Ed, posing on a jet ski does nothing to remind people that Farage lies like a rug! I figure if I recruit perimenopausal and menopausal women on MN, I’ll hopefully have an army that will scare any world military. Vipers get shit done.

Shedmistress · 04/01/2026 09:23

Illjustplayostrich · 04/01/2026 08:15

@CurlewKate I've seen it many times. Someone expresses concern about immigration and there's promptly a string of comments calling them racist/bigoted/disgraceful.

It is these people shouting that cause the people expressing concern to think 'fuck it' and just vote Reform.

But to be honest, what are people's options exactly? They are all shit in their own different ways.

Dgll · 04/01/2026 09:25

There is always a vocal bunch who will shout down people for being morally repugnant and this tends to silence people but doesn't stop them voting how they want.

Most people probably vote for the party that they think will be best for them financially as they can't really afford to vote for other reasons. Conservatives didn't do a good job on the economy and Labour seem to be doing a worse one, so it is hardly surprising people are looking
for another party to support.

I wouldn't vote for Reform because I don't like them and don't think they would be any good. I also think Farage is as nasty as a lot of people think he is. However, if people think Reform will be good for the country, I suspect quite a lot of voters will hold their nose and give them a try.

This isn’t a left wing site though.

It used to be 10 years ago, but it isn’t anymore. The Times needs to get its facts right.

l find it very right wing. I’ve been on 20 years.

The data from MN itself doesn’t support your view - as this image from the article shows.

I don’t agree. I think this site has an extremely strong left-leaning contingent. I haven’t noticed a similar far right faction.
