Things that sound nice but actually aren't

I'm putting forward Fruit teas.
Some of the combinations sound so promising and positively delicious.

In reality, they taste what I imagine drinking pot pourri to be like.

Hot roasted chestnuts. Smell incredible, taste like acorns.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 09/01/2026 12:27

Hot roasted chestnuts are lovely only if they are properly cooked, mostly they’re not and I have to spit them out, much as I would probably do if I ever tried an acorn (aren’t those poisonous?).

Plastic boxes of prepared exotic fruits. There's usually an overripe mushy unidentified substance, something tasting mildly fermented and fizzy and then fruits that should be softish are solid and can be snapped in half. The juice they are in makes makes my tongue blister & I usually get mouth ulcers. Moan moan whinge whinge. 😀

I probably shouldn't eat them when they're out of date and the cellophane cover is bulging. I don't know if the fruit actually turns into alcohol, but it certainly tastes like it. Which makes a meal deal for an office lunch break feel a bit naughty.

I think it does turn to alcohol & the vitamin content degrades. I guess if you don't mind the sour fizzy taste & it's not mouldy or slimy it's probably ok. Some supermarket brands seem to last longer than others. Another one is coleslaw, this can go horribly tangy & fizzy (onion?) & again certain brands are worse than others even if within the eat by date. Tesco Finest seems to hold out well though. Having said that, fermented foods are meant to be good for us but perhaps the salt preserves it? .

@FrangipaneMincies

Interested to hear how you know what acorns taste like....?!

Ugh, yes. My Dad frequently forgets I loathe them and brings a vegetarian alternative for me - chestnut stuffing - "no Dad, it's you who loves them, me, not so much". I think he genuinely forgets because he can't understand not loving something so 'delicious'. My son also loves them

the80sweregreat · 09/01/2026 18:20

I tried a nut roast once and it was awful ( it looked nice on the box ) I did think it would taste a lot better than it did. Chestnuts are the devils food too, I don’t often have to spit food out into a tissue ( and then the bin) but I did with the one I tried once. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire.. they should just stay there.

Walks in the snow. Scenery looks pretty, in reality there's a good chance of ending up in A&E if you're clumsy like me.

Hard agree re. city breaks. A friend has just returned from a ‘romantic city winter break’ in Norway. The ads online for it looked so enticing with warm cosy bars, hearty meals and lovely wintery views.

The reality is she is weeping over the cost of it all (£18 for a glass of wine..) and said it was mildly depressing trudging around the grey, cold city.

That’s more about her choice of destination, rather than a city break per se. Somewhere like Seville would have been a completely different experience.

You would probably like goats cheese then.

I love Hershey Kisses. Can't abide goat's cheese yuck!

GripGetter · 10/01/2026 12:34

Butternut squash. It's neither buttery nor nutty.

Sex in the sea.
Don't do it.

I've done it in a bath. Because your under water there's no lubricant on your lady part's.

'millionaires shortbread' - shop bought is disgraceful!
I like shortbread but the toffee and chocolate need to be good, and they seldom are.

Same with shop bought flapjack. My ds got in a tizz because she had shop bought I had home made. She didn't get that my home made flapjack was far more superior than her bought. Everyone wanted some of my homemade apart from her and husband who had the bought.

Kumbaya.

It is always Kumbaya...

Until its House of the Rising Sun....

stomachamelon · 10/01/2026 23:07

@sprigatito that description has made me feel a bit bilious ;)

Leavesandthings · 08/01/2026 21:49

I see your kumbaya, Dylan and Sheeran wannabes, and I raise you...

Extremely middle class, white men with dreadlocks singing about anarchism 😂
Would you like some deep cringe with the smoke in your face?!

I had forgotten about those!! Multi million pound mortgages, massive top of the range cars and yet trying to be Billy Bragg with not one sniff of irony!

More than a couple in the next village along which is very very naice. Money doesnt buy self awareness!

Same in a pool (natural one, not the public baths!).

Also sex in a shower - bloody uncomfortable and not enough room. Those sexy shower scenes in films and TV - all lies!

I don’t like eating outside much. Even if it’s warm and sunny or your on holiday , it feels wrong. I know people love it and it’s meant to be pleasant , but I do prefer being indoors really.

I am the same.! And the wasps too.
