Things that sound nice but actually aren't

I'm putting forward Fruit teas.
Some of the combinations sound so promising and positively delicious.

In reality, they taste what I imagine drinking pot pourri to be like.

I have always said 'why would I pay to stay somewhere shitter than my house'? 😂

But having said that, I do see the merits of camping, with the right person/people (meaning someone who's good company and a control freak in that they like to set everything up and provide all the right things, my ex, much as she was an arsehole in other ways, was that person, I will give her that. Had ALLL the gear and wouldn't let me lift a finger)!

There's just so much domesticity involved with camping. Packing all the stuff, unpacking all the stuff, setting it all up, having to shop regularly and consider how to keep stuff cold for long enough without getting food poisoning or having to to go the shop every bloody day. Having to cook fairly unfancy things - boring. Having to lug the dirty dishes to the washing place. It just seems to be one long domestic chore - no thankyou.

I don't mind self-catering, we did it for years when the kids were little, but I need a caravan at the very least.

Yes, exactly! I feel the same about caravans too- why would I pay money to go and stay in a place that's smaller/more cramped/ less comfortable than my living room at home?

I'd rather just stay at home and go and visit new places than spend thousands on a caravan that's less comfy and a fraction of the size of my actual home

I have often wondered on what planet is living somewhere either freezing cold and wet or boiling hot and damp, pissing in a bucket and having to get fully dressed up to the wellies in order to have a poo or a shower, in anyway considered a fucking holiday? and PAYING for the privilege!!

Paying to have less space, comfort and facilities that I pay a lot for in my own home makes zero sense to me!

Thank you!

I think this every time someone wangs on to me about how wonderful camping is 🤣

I know many will think this is yuk, but I get in the bath after DH has got out. He has it hot and doesn’t stay in for long, so when he gets out, it’s just right for me. It’s quite a big bath so I like to use the water too.

Bteakfast in bed is never good for me.

😱 I love my DH to little mintballs, but I don’t think I could climb into a tepid soup of his secretions and sheddings!

My routine is to run the bath half-full and just warm, get in and acclimatise, then turn the hot tap on with my big toe until it gets really toasty. I’m autistic with weird sensory problems around changes in temperature, so just getting into a hot bath is torture. The boiled frog method works for me!

It's neither freezing cold and wet or boiling hot and damp when we go camping.

Nor have I ever pissed in a bucket.

Nor gone fully dressed for showers etc go over in PJs and dressing gown and flips and have a lovely hot shower and get dressed... Not much different than the gym tbh

You're camping wrong and in the wrong places!

😁

Surely whenever people stay in a hotel room they have less space, comfort and facilities? Or I'm a BnB or cruise ship or any other holiday place really?

Nope. Hotels have an en suite shower/toilet, a comfy bed, room temp controls, room service 24/7, a mini bar, plugs for hairdryers etc

You get NONE of that when camping.

Yes but it still less facilities than your house...no kitchen, no separate bedroom etc...

I don’t require a separate bedroom and I’d get adjoining rooms if I did. Having no kitchen is bliss as it means no cooking or washing up. Camping sucks!!

That's fine, you don't like it.not everyone does. And that's okay.

But going on holiday always means a lack of facilities that your house does. So if that's part of the reason for not liking it, then surely all holidays are a bit crap for you?

Nope- I love my holidays for the sheer reason they have everything I have at home and I do less work and can relax. I dont have a spa or a swimming pool in my house as an example!

Camping is just one costly unpleasant slog where you do everything you do in your normal life but the environment makes it 1000 times more difficult and more work

DemBonesDemBones · 02/01/2026 19:32

Wine.

ThePieceHall · 02/01/2026 20:08

Festivals. For all the same reason as camping. Although I actually quite like glamping. I used to ‘do’ all the festivals with my tiny kids and then I had a Damascene moment when I watched a two-family group erect the biggest tent known to womankind right next to ours. This was not their sleeping tent. No, this was their kitchen tent. The two mums did not move from the kitchen tent all weekend. I am ashamed to say that their condiment shelf - for two nights - was better supplied than my supply at home. I just realised it was pointless to drag a tonne of basic camping kit, plus 87 bottles of sauce and mayo, the requisite two miles from the car park. Just to spend two days and nights cooking. For the boys and men.

But you are missing one major issue with camping that you dont have with any other sort of holiday......when I arrive at a hotel I dont need to build the accomodation and construct the bed.

I camped once and it was just such hard work! And I refuse to believe that you have never cold and wet if you have camped in the UK, or hot and sweaty for that matter!

As for walking across a field in my dressing gown.....no. Just no.

😂

Takes all sorts I suppose.

My point was that if fewer facilities than your house meant a shit holiday, then pretty much all holidays are shit holidays 😁

Speak for yourself.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 02/01/2026 21:41

Not necessarily. On our last holiday we were very close to a beach and had sea views. On the holiday before that, we had access to a shared swimming pool. We don't have either of these at home.

Define facilities.

We usually go SC so a kitchen is standard. But for a lot of people they dont WANT a kitchen! Thats why they go to a hotel that serves them food, its part of the holiday. I dont have a pool at home or a nice bar within walking distance for example. I dont have an ensuite, so a hotel room is winning on all of those.

Like you say, it takes all sorts.

well that's what I mean... Your hotel room generally doesn't have facilities to cook or freeze a joint of meat or a washing machine or whatever.

There are fewer facilities. Therefore by pps reasoning any holiday where there are fewer facilities than your own house means it's a shit holiday.

All I'm saying is that fewer facilities doesn't automatically mean it's crap

MisterT373 · 03/01/2026 03:29

Scented candles - unless you spend a decenr amount on them they just smell of chemicals

No this is wrong - the hotel has the facilities to cook any food I choose, and I can ask them for laundry service if needed so therefore it has just as many and actually MORE facilities than my home does (eg spa/pool etc).

You seem quite angry that lots of us dont enjoy camping.

I don’t think the posters angry!
People are just not making the points well.

Its not actually about facilities because a cheap basic Travelodge room is nothing like a Four Seasons hotel room. Even my bedroom is better than a Travelodge.

Camping is fun because it’s freer. Normal rules don’t apply. I’m not a fan because it’s a massive faff doing it for a holiday. I would honestly rather poo in behind a bush than in an en-suite though.

Sure, but we aren't comparing a travel lodge to a 5 star hotel, the comparison is between camping and a hotel- hence the facilities are vastly different and the fact is, the facilities in a hotel are far superior to camping.

I am curious why you would prefer pooping behind a bush to a proper indoor toilet though? 🤣

25flyby · 03/01/2026 09:41

@blowthedoorsoff Proximity, sound and smell.
I recently stayed at a budget hotel for a sports event with DH. You could hear every drip in the en-suite. The bedroom room didn’t have windows that opened and the fan and flush in the bathroom were poor.

Having a nice bracing wind take the smell away is much preferable.

I disagree that a cheap hotel room will have far superior facilities than a good campsite. I have been too hot and too cold in hotel rooms, disappointed by overly soft pillows and wonky beds meaning no sleep.
I have camped in really nice yurts that are much better.
