Things that sound nice but actually aren't

I'm putting forward Fruit teas.
Some of the combinations sound so promising and positively delicious.

In reality, they taste what I imagine drinking pot pourri to be like.

I loathe tent camping as well, it's an exhausting sufferfest.
I do love my campervan though, as I have a king sized bed, heating, a shower, toilet, fridge and cooker, so a nice little mini home I can take to lovely places.

@blowthedoorsoff Proximity, sound and smell.
I recently stayed at a budget hotel for a sports event with DH. You could hear every drip in the en-suite. The bedroom room didn’t have windows that opened and the fan and flush in the bathroom were poor.

Having a nice bracing wind take the smell away is much preferable.

I disagree that a cheap hotel room will have far superior facilities than a good campsite. I have been too hot and too cold in hotel rooms, disappointed by overly soft pillows and wonky beds meaning no sleep.
I have camped in really nice yurts that are much better.

But now you are moving the goalposts if you are talking about a yurt that has been pre erected with a proper bed etc as that isnt camping, its Glamping. Basically a hotel room with a shared bog and a canvas roof. Not the same as traditional camping at all.

Christmas markets- over priced rubbish
Hot chocolate - watery crap
Spas - boring, its just sitting in/around water for most of the day
Musicals - boring and nothing even remotely like the movie
Afternoon tea - its nothing but expensive finger sandwiches, cakes and tea, Certainly nothing to rave about.

Festivals - music in a field with portaloos and overpriced drinks & food. No thank you !
Concerts - too loud, too busy, can't get out of the venue afterwards. No thank you!

Gingerbiscuitlover · 04/01/2026 19:47

BBQ - if you’re the one doing it, so much faff and hard to clean afterwards
Snow - freshly fallen it’s lovely, but not once it turns into lethal ice or slush

They are something I tried but only ate one.

Chip shop fish & chips. Love the idea of a chippy tea but they are always soggy by the time I get them home (I only live just round the corner!)

I chuck the chips into the air fryer while I get plates warmed and the sauces etc----, they're lovely, it also works for left-over chips the next day! Yes, we have left-overs, at our chippy you have to say Stop as they serve the chips up.

newrubylane · 06/01/2026 11:33

Snow. It looks beautiful at first, granted, but it's cold, wet and slippery, then turns to horrid grey mush, and stuff gets cancelled.

HitchinNudists · 06/01/2026 14:04

City breaks. Expensive nonsense where you spend a long weekend trying to work out the public transport network of a city you've never been to before.

Glamnotglam · 06/01/2026 15:52

@HitchinNudists totally agree !

I tend to stick to walking, Ubers or hop on hop off buses, even I can’t mess that up.

Eastie77Returns · 06/01/2026 16:19

Hard agree re. city breaks. A friend has just returned from a ‘romantic city winter break’ in Norway. The ads online for it looked so enticing with warm cosy bars, hearty meals and lovely wintery views.

The reality is she is weeping over the cost of it all (£18 for a glass of wine..) and said it was mildly depressing trudging around the grey, cold city.

Spa days - total boredom in a dressing gown
NYE “out” - expensive, disappointing, stressful
Fish n chips - 1000 calories and 40 quid wasted
Champagne - instant headache
Weddings - boredom and headache
Hello Fresh etc - minuscule portions

Forty quid on fish and chips!!!!
Its only £20 here.

I always wonder about that sort of break. If the best advert for a place abroad is 'lovely cosy bars' well I have a couple of them within walking distance and hundreds more a short train rider away to the nearest city. I love city breaks, but only in places where there are things I'd love to do or see whatever the weather, because I can't do them at home.

I can only drink fruit tea as am intolerant to cafeine. Can't drink decaffeinated as intolerant to dairy! You get used to the taste tho, fruit teas are better than herbal. Camomile is like licking a lawn.

You don't have to drink tea. I never touch tea or coffee. I don't understand why there is such social pressure to drink any of it.

Leavesandthings · 06/01/2026 21:51

Campfires!
"Let's get a fire going!"
No. The smoke absolutely stinks out your clothes, hair and skin. The smoke blows right in someone's face, usually mine. You have to sit hunched over on a log or something else that's darn uncomfortable and hurts your arse. Really hate sitting round a fire.

Completely disagree with you about the smoke.

It doesnt blow into your face at all, cos it all fucking well blows into mine! And how come no matter how many times you wash your hair you can smell it for days every time you brush it?

I think that this comes under the "camping" umbrella, although garden fire pits and chimneas count too!

I just like hot drinks. When I was a kid my grandmother gave me some warm lemonade and it was amazing! Ribena and hot water is lush too, gives the taste that fruits teas promise but never deliver! But do prefer coffee.

To add :
All uk theme parks - horrific
Most restaurant chains- I could cook better and cheaper at home and I'm not a chef, but neither are most "chefs'' in uk restaurant chains
Firework displays- total waste of time and money
Funfairs - see above
Chinese & fish n chips - both expensive greasy, gunk junk
