Things that sound nice but actually aren't

I'm putting forward Fruit teas.
Some of the combinations sound so promising and positively delicious.

In reality, they taste what I imagine drinking pot pourri to be like.

For me it’s Chinese food I love the smell but it never tastes like the smell if that makes sense. I’m always disappointed,

Totally agree! So greasy and heavy too! That’s why I Moved to Vietnamese and Thai, much nicer!

goodaspink90 · 01/01/2026 12:03

Saunas. They are made to sound nice and look as if people relax. However for me they are just too uncomfortably hot rather than relaxing.

Spa days - total boredom in a dressing gown
NYE “out” - expensive, disappointing, stressful
Fish n chips - 1000 calories and 40 quid wasted
Champagne - instant headache
Weddings - boredom and headache
Hello Fresh etc - minuscule portions

I loved Hello Fresh but stopped ordering because the portions were too big!!

the80sweregreat · 01/01/2026 13:12

Fish and chips are disappointing !
I always feel a bit poorly afterwards too ( probably the fat content ) same with Chinese ( or just getting old )

MartinCrieffsHat · 01/01/2026 13:28

I can't remember when I last had a fruit tea but I agree about the pot pourri comment.

@the80sweregreat ,most chips are disappointing. I only eat them when I know they'll be good. (I don't eat fish)
Chinese food gives me indigestion, even just a tiny bit, so I avoid it.

Can't find it again but whoever suggested 'millionaires shortbread' must win surely!

I mentioned it - shop bought is disgraceful!

I am usually also disappointed with fish and chips, unless we happen to be at Chez Fred in Bournemouth, they are lovely.

I like shortbread but the toffee and chocolate need to be good, and they seldom are.

M&S meals always looks really tasty and appetising on the box but they usually taste just a bit better than the box.

This is so true! They've taken out all the salt and sugar which actually gives their meals some taste. I suppose it's better for us, as we then make our own meals, but it's still a shame for those days when you just want to shove something in the oven and have a glass of wine.

Flavoured hot chocolate, like hazelnut and maple syrup. Like drinking a Glade candle. Just revolting.

Have you ever drunk a Glade candle 😂

Totally get what you mean though!

Years ago, at breakfast in a German hotel, I realised with horror that I had started eating the placemat. In my defence it did look vaguely like bread, it was only when chewing it I realised my mistake. Embarrassed, I apologised to the waiter for having cut off the corner of the placemat, and offered to pay for a new one. He pointed out it was rye bread.

This made me laugh - the bread IS just like a placemat!

yoga just swishes my blood about to much and I feel all percular afterwards

Yes me too. Could sleep for a week after and feel very fuzzy. Also last time I did it in a class, a woman next to me was free bleeding on white leggings. Fucking grim. Never went again.

Emmz1510 · 01/01/2026 15:42

Funfairs- may as well just set alight to your money right now. In fact any manufactured ‘fun’ activities for kids.

Cocktails- they look pretty but are usually full of sugar, far too strong and designed to cause suffering the next day!

All inclusive holidays- they might have their place for young families but most of them just involve eating the same things three times a day in a noisy canteen with people having lunch in their bathing suits and too much ‘free’ junk (shitty icecream and slush cocktails- see above). They suck the joy out of holidaying as far as I’m concerned.

Bath bombs- dry out your skin and mess up your bath.

I tasted Hershey’s chocolate once 🤢 never again

Arran2024 · 01/01/2026 15:46

Boat trips. London Eye. Basically anything that traps you while you slowly see the view.

I like Hershey’s especially the white chocolate with the crumbly cookie bits and the peanut butter ones.

Goats cheese. Tastes like a goat smells.

Yes I always think that but friends say they love it!

I don't think anyone thinks that's nice though...

Frugalgal · 01/01/2026 16:20

Festivals.

Teapigs red fruit tea is to die for. All others are nasty pish water.

Empress13 · 01/01/2026 16:34

With the exception of some M&S foods, most supermarket Xmas party 3 for 2’s etc beige, bland and usually soggy mess once cooked from frozen yuk

RedRosie · 01/01/2026 17:15

I quite like the smell of actual goats ... Although if I could only sniff one animal ever again it would be a horse. 😁

I am not a person who likes a bath with a mug of fruit tea. Certainly not.

Mindfulness - nice idea but actually stresses me out
Spa days - boring and like being in a warm heavily scented prison for a day
Barbecue- lot of work for a meal which would have been easier and tastier cooked in the kitchen
Camping- why???? I work hard to be able to stay in places with beds and running water I don’t need to trek across a field for

A line painted on canvas, masquerading as modern art

If i could do it, it ain't art. I want to see evidence of skill and talent

Reminds me of one, it had a gold line across a white canvas, representing the River Thames.
Price: £2000!!!

Wished I'd thought of it but realise you've got to be a certain type to even have the gallery show your work.

Also galleries as a whole, love the idea of being cultured but get bored wondering around.

Yes to all of these!

Plastic boxes of prepared exotic fruits. There's usually an overripe mushy unidentified substance, something tasting mildly fermented and fizzy and then fruits that should be softish are solid and can be snapped in half. The juice they are in makes makes my tongue blister & I usually get mouth ulcers. Moan moan whinge whinge. 😀
