Things that sound nice but actually aren't

I'm putting forward Fruit teas.
Some of the combinations sound so promising and positively delicious.

In reality, they taste what I imagine drinking pot pourri to be like.

Pimm’s - yuck!!!

Spa days. Sitting in your wet costume in a dressing gown surrounded by other people.

Hoppinggreen · 30/12/2025 15:52

Cakes
I like the concept but most of them are just disappointing

Coffee, although I know lots will disagree. Love the smell but hate the taste.

Snap. I love coffee aroma. The taste, though, yuck. I think it's dependent on the blend, though. Instant coffees are a no.

mathanxiety · 30/12/2025 15:53

YYY to goat cheese, going out for NYE, baths, and campfires.

Also -
Camping
Hiking and hill walking (the midges!!)

Crushed23 · 30/12/2025 15:54

Salted caramel lattes

ANY flavoured coffees.

I only ever buy them at Christmas markets and the like, but I have never not been disappointed. Always sickly sweet too.

I’ll throw in live music that isn’t a rave / music you can dance to. You just sit there like a lemon surrounded by people singing terribly over the band. Prefer to be dancing!

Alittlefrustrated · 30/12/2025 15:55

I read the title and came to say fruit teas 🤣Sound nice, smell delicious, taste putrid.

nOlives · 30/12/2025 15:55

Olives smell like silage, and taste how they smell.

38woman · 30/12/2025 15:55

Weddings, long boring and v expensive x

Lolabear38 · 30/12/2025 15:56

When I read the thread topic I instantly thought of fruit teas! Also I agree with pp who said a day off to relax - sounds so lovely but I usually end up doom scrolling for ages, not achieving anything and feeling irritated with myself for wasting the day.

MartinCrieffsHat · 30/12/2025 15:57

Cakes. They are seldom as good as they look.

Mummysgogetter · 30/12/2025 15:58

Watching films or Netflix all afternoon always seems like a nice cosy relaxing idea until about two hours in then get fed up and bored and wished I had done something else

bumptybum · 30/12/2025 15:58

TyneTeas · 30/12/2025 15:16

Fruity teas smell delicious but They Lie and taste of disappointment

100%

rockywilderness · 30/12/2025 15:59

Swimming with dolphins in the sea. Meant to be magical but in reality I drank lots of sea water, got really cold, got buzzed by a dolphin that I barely saw in the murky water and kept being shouted at by an excitable New Zealand’s that I was having ‘the best time EVER’. I was not.

ConnieHeart · 30/12/2025 15:59

Christmaseree · 30/12/2025 15:44

Lots of cakes at an all inclusive buffet, beautiful presentation then no taste.

Oh yes. Abroad they do not seem to have anything with a buttery biscuit base. You think you're getting cheesecake but the bottom is just soggy sponge

Blueyrocks · 30/12/2025 15:59

NuffSaidSam · 30/12/2025 15:37

Brainwashing.

Sounds like a spa treatment. I'd love to have my brain washed, like when you have your hair washed at the hairdressers.

Actual brainwashing is bad.

😂now I want a brainwash

Coffeeishot · 30/12/2025 16:00

Frappes and cold coffee with syrup they look delicious and a bit of a treat, but they are horrible so sickly.

OptimisimBias · 30/12/2025 16:00

Christmas markets - overpriced, over hyped, just a cold crowded and expensive way to get drunk on crap booze and buy tat from mid Nov to the new year…..when did they become such a ‘must do’ festive event?

CheeseandFigs · 30/12/2025 16:00

Holidays. Should be fantastic. In reality I can't stop thinking about how much we're spending in so few days. And all the possibilities of it going wrong. So many conflicting thoughts about how to get the value out of the time. Do more stuff, see more sights, eat more interesting food, make the most of it etc, but that's exhausting and my body aches, and l'm constipated, where are the vegetables and all bran? Or it's a holiday so I must relax, well great I'm spending £6k to lie on my back and read. I can do that at home for nothing, but here I'm stressed about getting the right sunbed at 6am and I have half a sand castle in my arse. Was that a sandflea? I hope I don't get bitten. What if I have a reaction? What if the salad washed in tap water? I better not get a dicky tummy. If I'm ill tomorrow that's money wasted. I hope the house is OK. Did I turn off the oven?

Also macaroons and any non homemade food, especially cake

MungoforPresident · 30/12/2025 16:01

For many people, Christmas with the family!

I was alone at Christmas again as I have no family at all. And Mumsnet was a great consolation as it was full of people complaining about having a lousy time during Christmas or dreading it for one reason or another!

I am aware that happy people do not post as much in general on forums but I was very happy not to be in any of the described predicaments!

Oh absolutely, I haven't been to European Markets to compare but the uk ones are a total rip off.

HelloHelloHelloHowLow · 30/12/2025 16:02

Pumpkin spice / gingerbread/ salted caramel lattes. Yak.

Woodwalk · 30/12/2025 16:03

I agree with days off to relax and would like to add in the same vein...a lie in. Wake up extremely thirsty, feeling really confused/out of sorts/panicked and then feel disappointed I've wasted my morning!

I prefer a more structured relaxation that feels more earned 😂

OptimisimBias · 30/12/2025 16:04

@Coffeeishot i was nearly taken in by insta reels of European Christmas markets - and then my friend went to one in Oslo - lets just say the reality looked every bit as pants as the uk ones I’ve been to!

Hot tubs

Was coming on to say this. DH likes the idea of us relaxing in a hot tub.

I get bored and find them uncomfortable. Perhaps it's because I'm short. If I relax I float up off the seat.

Also, most cheesecakes. I crave a good cheesecake. It doesn't exist!
