How far are you from your nearest airport?

And is it important to you to be close to one?

I’m asking because I moved recently and a friend said that it’s a big advantage as I’m now under half an hour from the nearest airport and said that would factor into her next move. I rarely fly(Because I hate flying) but she is right that it would be useful. So I’m curious if proximity to an airport is a factor that many others consider when moving home? No judgement and I can see what a difference it would make if you travel regularly(For work or leisure).

About 1 1/2 - 2 hours depending on traffic.

PatsyJane · 27/12/2025 17:15

15 minute drive or a few quick stops on train. We travel quite a bit to see family or holidays and it’s very convenient.

About 45 minute drive. Or 20-25 minute drive and 10-15 minute train journey if we are actually flying out from there. Gatwick

Squirrelchops1 · 27/12/2025 17:18

10 min drive. However there's only about 8 flights a day and usually a lot more expensive than the airport 1.5 hours drive away!

mondaytosunday · 27/12/2025 17:18

Just under an hour (I live in London about equidistant to both Heathrow and Gatwick). But that doesn’t include parking and taking the shuttle to the terminal!
An hour is fine. Any closer there might be more plane noise.

TheNightingalesStarling · 27/12/2025 17:19

10 mins walk. But parallel to flight path so you hear a slight rumble rather than anything loud (with the exception of one type of vintage aircraft).

elliejjtiny · 27/12/2025 17:21

About an hour. I haven't flown anywhere for over 20 years so it's never been a consideration.

Arran2024 · 27/12/2025 17:22

I'm close to Heathrow but tbh most holiday flights are from Gatwick. And getting to Heathrow is a bit of a nightmare even if you live nearby but not n̈ear the tube

JohnTheRevelator · 27/12/2025 17:29

I live about 4 miles from Heathrow airport. I certainly didn't factor the closeness of it in when I moved here,I moved here because it was where my husband to be lived. I'm now divorced and still live here. In the 41 years I've lived here I've never used it for a flight! The only time I flew from there was before I moved to Hounslow. When I first lived here,I thought I'd never get used to the noise (I am right under the flight path) but I can honestly say I barely notice it now.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/12/2025 17:29

13 miles

Craftysue · 27/12/2025 17:31

About 20 minutes drive from Birmingham. It's handy but we didn't consider it when we moved here

winnieanddaisy · 27/12/2025 17:33

I was brought up within half a mile of a major airport. I now live within 20 minutes of that airport and 30 minutes of another major airport . It wasn’t a consideration of where we live but it’s very handy . These two airports are also the nearest to my DGC with the only difference being that they have a 2 hour drive to get to them .

chimebells · 27/12/2025 17:38

We live pretty much half an hour to either LHR or LGW. 20 mins to T5 on a v good run with no traffic. It’s important - my DH is often on a plane about once a week.

mindutopia · 27/12/2025 17:44

35 minutes. Not much flies out of it though. Usually go to next closest which is 1.5 hours or sometimes Heathrow/Gatwick/Stansted, which would be 3-4 hours depending on the day.

It not really a consideration at all. I wouldn’t want to live that close to one, but I’m happy to drive a bit. I only use it once or twice a year.

Sheknowsaboutme · 27/12/2025 17:49

Google maps say im 1hr 46 mins from Liverpool airport. But never been there. Last flew from manchester in 2011.

so no, its not important to me. I prefer to be home in the quietness of the countryside.

there used to be a SAR base 2 miles as the crow flies from me

Judellie · 27/12/2025 17:49

It's 3 miles away and has a metro link but we rarely fly as we prefer trains.

NutButterOnToast · 27/12/2025 17:52

We're 15 mins from Exeter but it's not a hugely busy airport so we use Bristol (90 min drive) a lot.

We do use Exeter whenever we can, it's tiny so check in/departures is no faff. It's a lot easier now there's flights to Schipol so we can get anywhere indirectly.

TeenageSu1cideDontDoit · 27/12/2025 17:55

15 minute drive from the closest airport. My sister lives a 5 minute walk away, which is very handy for airport parking. 25 minute drive from the closest big airport.

Whitesapphire · 27/12/2025 17:57

Can get to Birmingham Airport in about 35 minutes using the M6 toll, very convenient.

Summerunlover · 27/12/2025 18:35

9 minutes away. It’s great I love it.

ResusciAnnie · 27/12/2025 18:36

Actual useful airport - 40-60 mins. There are lots of little airports round here though which is handy if you want flying lessons (DH!)

Christmaseree · 27/12/2025 18:42

15 minutes from one and 50 from another which is handy as I go abroad 8 times per year.

ObliviousCoalmine · 27/12/2025 18:48

2.5 hours ish

BlueWorkDay · 27/12/2025 18:51

About 25 mins to LHR or 35 to LGW.

Both DH and I fly quite frequently for work.

Luckily we're not directly under a flight path.

It's pretty convenient.
