How far are you from your nearest airport?

And is it important to you to be close to one?

I’m asking because I moved recently and a friend said that it’s a big advantage as I’m now under half an hour from the nearest airport and said that would factor into her next move. I rarely fly(Because I hate flying) but she is right that it would be useful. So I’m curious if proximity to an airport is a factor that many others consider when moving home? No judgement and I can see what a difference it would make if you travel regularly(For work or leisure).

15 minutes drive with no traffic. It's one of the reasons we moved to the area we live in. DH family are mostly overseas so we do fly, or they fly here, reasonably often.

IceIceSlippyIce · 27/12/2025 15:17

Just over 5 miles. We generally dont use it tho - there is one flight today, 3 or 4 on a busy off season day. There are some additional charter flights in the summer.

And no, it didn't factor into where we live.

DramaAlpaca · 27/12/2025 15:18

About 40 minutes.

angerelle · 27/12/2025 15:19

We're a 15 minute bus ride from Exeter airport, but there aren't that many destinations available with scheduled flights. When we went to Dublin though it was so easy to get there and back!

I wouldn't choose a location based on that though, we don't fly often enough.

If you were within half an hour of a busier airport you might have to think about aircraft noise? We aren't often under the flight path (when we are, it's infrequent enough to be exciting).

I do love that the Red Arrows stay at our airport when they do shows in the South West, them flying over the house heralds the start of summer for me 😊

Less than 3 miles.

BillieWiper · 27/12/2025 15:21

It'd be appalling to live on the doorstep of an airport. Or under the flight path anyway.

So it's never crossed my mind other than I'd avoid moving very close to one. I can think of about four that are around an hour away which is perfectly acceptable.

blankcanvas3 · 27/12/2025 15:22

Less than half an hour, it’s a positive but it’s not why we live here

Sgtmajormummy · 27/12/2025 15:22

I’m pleased to have a Ryanair airport 15 minutes by train or 30 by car or bus from me but it wouldn’t have swayed me on buying a house.
Surely you choose the town or part of the city for the local schools/facilities. Airport is 3 times a year max.

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/12/2025 15:23

I’m in Central Scotland, easily accessible to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Prestwick airports. I generally don’t take holidays in places where I can’t fly direct - it’s really handy, particularly when on the home stretch after a holiday and you just want to get home.

Newyear26 · 27/12/2025 15:23

About 20 minutes drive. We are not under the flight path though so never hear planes at all.

taxguru · 27/12/2025 15:24

90 minutes drive away to Manchester (assuming no accidents on the M60/M62) which has always been a pain in the arse. We enjoyed a few years of a more local Airport when Jet 2 flew out of Blackpool but that stopped a while ago, so it's back to Manchester now. It's such a pain, it's meant we don't fly as often as we'd like.

YellowCherry · 27/12/2025 15:24

About 25 mins drive. It's handy but not something I'd consider when buying a house. Too many other factors that are more important IMO.

SnowDaysAndBadLays · 27/12/2025 15:25

40 minute drive, I haven't flown in maybe 15 years so not really relevant, being a 3 minute walk from the train station is much handier.

Isabelle70 · 27/12/2025 15:27

2 miles or a 7 minute drive but I live on an island so you are always close to the airport.

MiddleAgedDread · 27/12/2025 15:27

About 20min on a quiet run, 30 on a busy one. It’s very important to me, we both travel a lot and often for work so it makes a big difference.

Myblueclematis · 27/12/2025 15:28

About 20 minutes or so depending on traffic by car, Southampton airport.

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 27/12/2025 15:30

I'm about 20 mins drive from Stansted. It's actually quite convenient, but being close to Cambridge was more important in choice of house.

Herekelle · 27/12/2025 15:32

Our nearest airport is 11 miles (London City) but we rarely use it as it doesn't serve the destinations we go to most often. It's 32 miles to Gatwick which we fly from most often, and although it's further, it's a simple tube & train ride to get there (about 75 mins). We travel for holidays and to visit family, never for work.

It's a 16 min tube journey to a Eurostar terminal from our front door, and that's been really helpful - we've deliberately chosen holidays involving easy Eurostar trips with young dcs as it's so short and convenient.

It didn't factor into where we decided to live. The priority for us was to live close to school and work (walking/cycling distance under 10 mins for both). It made sense to prioritise easy journeys for the places we go to most often, so we could spend more time as a family rather than daily travel, and then second most important to be able to get to central London attractions/leisure facilities as we use those every weekend. We accepted that we'd make longer journeys for overseas trips which we only do a few times a year.

RaraRachael · 27/12/2025 15:32

About an hour and a half in either direction. Doesn't bother me as it's always been the same.

tothewindow25 · 27/12/2025 15:35

2 hours, unfortunately, and it is an inconvenience.

I wouldn’t move house specifically based on airport proximity, but I agree it is an advantage.

I would definitely fly more if I was closer.

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 27/12/2025 15:37

We live a 10 minute drive from our nearest airport. For us, it was a negative - but the positives of the house outweighed the negatives. They have rerouted the flight path since then, which is better.

We are over 2 hours here too. We are in very rural Wales. Def wouldn't move though. We do have some direct trains to one airport though.

TigerRag · 27/12/2025 15:45

There's one 39 miles to the south and another 39 miles to the west. Can't remember the last time I used either due to it being easier to go to one slightly further (better flight times, easier to get to as a non driver and there's a hotel on site )

Jewelanemone · 27/12/2025 15:46

45 minutes from Gatwick and Heathrow.
