How far are you from your nearest airport?

And is it important to you to be close to one?

I’m asking because I moved recently and a friend said that it’s a big advantage as I’m now under half an hour from the nearest airport and said that would factor into her next move. I rarely fly(Because I hate flying) but she is right that it would be useful. So I’m curious if proximity to an airport is a factor that many others consider when moving home? No judgement and I can see what a difference it would make if you travel regularly(For work or leisure).

We used to live next to a car park for a big airport but we moved away, I'm not sure which our nearest airport is now, the old one is about an hour and a half away by car but there may be a closer one. We don't fly, even when it was walking distance I only flew to 3 places in 40 years.

We are still close to a railway station here though, that's much more important to me.

Londoncallingtotheunderworld · 27/12/2025 15:48

Our nearest is Leeds Bradford which is about a 60 min drive.

OhDear111 · 27/12/2025 15:48

35 mins to Heathrow. Same to Luton. 1 hr 30 mins to Gatwick but tend to only use Heathrow. Luton doesn’t go where we fly to normally.

ZenNudist · 27/12/2025 15:49

15mins cab ride if no traffic, handy at 4am. Not under a flight path.

I'd hate to live a long drive from an airport but we often have to fly from other airports, especially Heathrow, that are a very long way away.

I don't think I'd want to live 15 mins from Heathrow. Most other airports would be fine, but some airports are more useful than others. It would be great to be near Stansted. I imagine that the cost of housing in that part of the world is way more than the offset of cheap flights everywhere.

5 minute drive at the most and it is really convenient. Makes holidaying and logistics really easy.

Cat1504 · 27/12/2025 15:50

25 mins from Liverpool….35 from Manchester…..good train connections for both….it gives you options when going away….have often flown out from one…then back to the other…for cheaper/ better times / better days

Well nearest airport is 20 minute drive away but its not for big passenger aircraft, its mostly used by the military and for general aviation planes. No good for going to visit family but is nice for plane spotting (I work right next to it, can see the end of the runway from the doorway)
Nearest passenger aircraft airport is 1.5 hours away but its no good to me as no direct flights to the UK which is the only place I ever fly to.

10 minute drive to Bournemouth Airport very handy for quick trips in Europe

Biscuits4 · 27/12/2025 15:53

Should be about 60 mins for one and 75 for the other. However, often delays on motorway to the 60 min one, so quicker to do the 75 one which has a few road changes through the edge of a city.

Probably go abroad once a year, so wouldn't be a reason to move closer to an airport especially as we're in a great area to live in terms of what it offers us.

ThePoshUns · 27/12/2025 15:54

I have 2 airports in less than an hour away. Heathrow 1 hr 45 minutes. I like being nearish to an airport.

Helpfullright · 27/12/2025 15:54

Bang in the middle of Manchester and Liverpool, fly regularly for Work and pleasure so would always factor in house choice move.

Berlinlover · 27/12/2025 15:54

Less than a 20 minute drive, I was born and raised in this town though so am not living here because of the airport.

RedRiverShore6 · 27/12/2025 15:56

About 40 miles away

ridingfreely · 27/12/2025 15:57

6 miles / 10min drive

Greyrock2828 · 27/12/2025 16:01

Im abroad - 20-25 min drive or 40 mins on the bus door to door. Not under a flight path. I love it but I fly every 2 weeks for work, and have flown every week for the last 8 weeks for work so it's important to me. Would not live under a flight path though.

pilates · 27/12/2025 16:07

1 hour

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 27/12/2025 16:09

About 40 mins/20ish miles. It’s in my husbands contact that he needs to be within so many miles of an international airport.

alwaysstressed · 27/12/2025 16:13

We live about 15 minutes away from Edinburgh airport which isn’t important to me

Oldraver · 27/12/2025 16:14

We're 57, 62 and 67 miles from airports

Marylou2 · 27/12/2025 16:16

Right in the middle of Manchester and Liverpool airports. 20 minutes from each one yet far enough for no airport noise.

Chasingsquirrels · 27/12/2025 16:17

About 45 mins from Stansted.
Nearest airport is actually Cambridge which is about 15 mins, but isn't one you'd fly from. DP works there now though.

Glittertwins · 27/12/2025 16:19

15 min drive, not close enough to be bothered by noise either. It was not a factor in moving here at all.

Ineedanewsofa · 27/12/2025 16:20

7 miles, 20 minutes maximum, was originally a factor in moving to the area due to flying a lot for work. Both changed jobs now so much less travel but we still like the area so have stayed. Super handy for holidays too!

aintnospringchicken · 27/12/2025 16:20

Depending on traffic and time of day we live around a 25-30 minute drive from our nearest airport.
There are more important factors than proximity to an airport for us to consider when choosing a location to live.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/12/2025 16:22

Roughly an hour from Manchester which is near enough. We used to live in North Yorkshire, that was a pain as there weren’t really any convenient major airports at a time when DH and I both needed to do a fair bit of business travel - we’d often end up having to get to Heathrow by train or a flight from teeside which made work trips quite a pain.
