How far are you from your nearest airport?

And is it important to you to be close to one?

I’m asking because I moved recently and a friend said that it’s a big advantage as I’m now under half an hour from the nearest airport and said that would factor into her next move. I rarely fly(Because I hate flying) but she is right that it would be useful. So I’m curious if proximity to an airport is a factor that many others consider when moving home? No judgement and I can see what a difference it would make if you travel regularly(For work or leisure).

I'm 3.5 hours drive away from my nearest airport.

North87 · 27/12/2025 16:22

I'm 5 minutes away from Manchester Airport. The kids love watching the planes fly over.

Cando6 · 27/12/2025 16:22

15 mins from Heathrow. TN5 anyway. I work there!

Eggcheese · 27/12/2025 16:24

About 30 mins to Gatwick .

Jellycatspyjamas · 27/12/2025 16:30

I’m about 30/40 mins from Glasgow and Edinburgh airports, ease of road travel was more of a factor when buying our house though because at that time I did a lot of driving for work. It’s handy for holidays now though, especially coming off a late flight.

I live 2 miles from an airport so it’s a very quick 10 minutes in a taxi. I have always lived here so being close to an airport wasn’t a decision I made when buying my house but if I ever moved away from the area I would consider it a major faff having to travel miles with perhaps an overnight stay before or after my holiday.

Rural Wales, so 90 minutes to a small south west airport. Four hours to Heathrow. We fly short haul for a bit of sun a couple of times a year but nothing more adventurous.

Ten years ago I lived in Central London and could get to Heathrow in 30 minutes. I used to go to the UAE for a long weekend because it was so easy to fly anywhere. Dublin I could do in a day and Paris from Kings Cross (at a push) you could do for lunch!

The easier it is to get to an airport or transport links generally, the more options you have I suppose!

It's never occurred to me that living near an airport is an advantage. I have family who lives near Heathrow. It's a noisy place to be and think it is a disadvantage. It's much better to live quite a distance away. I am slightly nearer Gatwick, but both are accessible either by car or public transport in under 2 hours which I think is fine for a very occasional need.

not sure as in a village,

iamnotalemon · 27/12/2025 16:35

10 minutes

RampantIvy · 27/12/2025 16:35

Currently 55 minutes to Leeds Bradford and and hour and 5 minutes to Manchester by car. We never use the train to get to Manchester as it is too unreliable.

However, during the rush hour it is easily double that or more.

Princesspollyyy · 27/12/2025 16:38

Im a 50 minute drive from 2 airports. One in one direction, and one in the other direction.

Notwellbell · 27/12/2025 16:38

Two and a half hours, airports wouldn’t be part of my decision as to where I move unless I was like commuting weekly by plane or something

Heathotstuff · 27/12/2025 16:38

15 mins drive

Megsdaughter · 27/12/2025 16:41

45 minutes from Bristol, 60 from Southampton. Can get most places from either. We didnt buy our house fir either thi as we moved from a places that was the other way around.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 27/12/2025 16:42

We're about 20 mins from Gatwick although weirdly we're on the Heathrow flight path.

If the flights are timed right, we can get a bus to LGW from the end of our road.

It wasn't a reason for choosing the house because I've always lived within co-ee of a major airport.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 27/12/2025 16:46

It's equidistant to Bristol, Cardiff or Birmingham for us, which is around an hour and a half to two hours depending on traffic. Though saying that, DD had a very early flight from Birmingham earlier this year and it was bliss - took 45 minutes at 5am, though nearly 2 hours coming back thanks to rush hour.

TheLivelyCat · 27/12/2025 16:50

2h drive away. However as I don't fly that often it isn't a big deal for me. Or I can get a direct train.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/12/2025 16:50

I live about 12 miles from Bristol Airport. Its a 30 minutes drive through the villages south of Bristol. We also live under the flightpath and planes are at about 2000ft above us according to flightradar.
As a child I used to live on the housing estate next to Filton runway where Concorde was built and tested. It's above Concorde's nose in the picture. So 5 minutes drive/15 minutes walk.

CoodleMoodle · 27/12/2025 16:52

10mins drive or 15mins on the bus (Gatwick).

KnottyKnitting · 27/12/2025 16:54

30 mins from the closest in good traffic although it’s quite a small airport so not a full range of destinations. The next closest is 40 mins.

TheGreatBugsy · 27/12/2025 16:57

20 minutes away and it was a factor for us when deciding where to live.

Purplewarrior · 27/12/2025 16:58

25 to 35 minutes drive depending on time of day. Definitely a factor.

Justploddingonandon · 27/12/2025 17:02

About an hour. In theory it should be closer but London traffic and being on the wrong train line come in to play. I don’t fly often enough for it to bother me. We are under the flight path but by that point the planes are high enough I can’t hear them over the general city noise.
