A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

A Labour council has been accused of building “socialist speed bumps” that scrape high-performance and luxury family cars.

Residents on an affluent street in Lewisham, south-east London, say the local authority has installed sleeping policemen that are prone to damaging the undercarriages of expensive private vehicles.

Motorists in Blackheath have even produced their own engineering report, which claims that 12 out of a sample of 15 new speed bumps breach Lewisham council’s recommended height limit. The council, however, insists they all meet national guidelines.

The local authority installed the speed bumps a few months ago in an attempt to stop drivers exceeding 20mph speed limits imposed on Lee Terrace and Belmont Hill.

The council has received numerous complaints that they are too high and the undercarriages of a variety of cars are being grazed.

The residents’ report claims the council’s “own standards” dictate that a speed bump should not be any higher than 80mm. But five of the 12 cushions they measured appeared to be between 100mm and 105mm high.

OH naughty. I'd start suing them. I have a mini 20 years old and have to be very careful going over ours on one road. Luckily they're in two halves so you drive down the middle.

redange · 10/01/2026 15:02

The council might think, sod the 'Luxury' Cars. However, like other Socialists they can't seem to understand that people in whatever you define as a Luxury Car have disposable income. Since, the high street is dying whether its either surely any council with any sense would want to attract as much traffic as possible, in order to frequent the area's businesses.

It is likely though that these Councils are full of the same people, that on here have declared that Mumsnet is a 'Right wing' Echo Chamber . These, people on another thread believe that the polls are 'propaganda' and are over representing Reform and the Right ! You really could not make it up... Delusion........

redange · 10/01/2026 15:07

The, high street of most towns are dying and if the town concerned, had any sense, would actively encourage people with any disposable income to visit. To many towns have expensive car parks, if anywhere at all to park. You can imagine this anti business sentiment is multiplied within London's Councils.

Dear God!

I am sure some will argue that it’s technically not arrests, bla bla bla.

But it really shows a heavy hand and a chilling affect on free speech in a democracy.

I think this has to do with policing incentives and budgets as well as bad laws.

TheNuthatch · 10/01/2026 15:54

I went on the Free Iran protest today. There were around 200 of us there.
The lady next to me was kind enough to translate the chants for me, and thanked me for being there. It was brilliant!

Well done for braving the freezing weather.

TheNuthatch · 10/01/2026 16:19

It was bloody freezing 🥶 but well worth it. I felt the need to do something this morning. I'm really glad I went.
My dh and dc think I've lost the plot, but hey ho. 😂

There were chants of 'long live the king' and calls for American intervention. Photos of Pahlavi everywhere.

I bet. I only made it to the supermarket and that was cold enough. Was the mood more worried or optimistic?

Optimistic, hopeful and defiant. I saw quite a few Iranian men in tears. It was really lively and full of energy. They have a fire in their bellies!

OH well done you. I'd have been in tears too I think.

38thparallel · 10/01/2026 16:42

Well done Nuthatch - you’re a star.
I’m going to London on Tuesday and I will definitely go in between appointments if the protest is still going.

38thparallel · 10/01/2026 17:18

Protesters have managed to climb onto the balcony of the Iran Embassy and replace the flag.

Telegraph reporting a coordinated effort between UK, Canada, Australia to ban X.

FFS. Well, I suppose it's not surprising I mean look at what all these countries have in common.

@justasking111 I thought your DH knew somebody who was telling him that the Ayatollah had already left. Sorry that's a couple of nights ago isn't it? But I forgot to respond.

I know one person in the army - saw him today and he was looking really worried and he's been on quite a few training exercises recently. I tend to think of everything as being sinister Starmer. Or is it just post lockdown? I'm not sure. I constantly have this feeling that something is going to appear out of the blue. Army contact looking mortgage does not help with this. He did give me a reason why he was looking so worried but it didn't make a lot of sense. I don't know him that well though. just acquaintance in the pub.

EmeraldRoulette · 11/01/2026 00:38

@TheNuthatch glad you found it a good experience

The guy who put the flag up in London today must be like a parkour master or something!

I was supposed to be in bed early today. Early for me being like before midnight. Obviously, that did not work 😂
