I can’t stand Rowan Atkinson

Used to love Mr Bean as a kid, I found it on Netflix recently to show the kids and I honestly couldn’t understand how I used to enjoy it at all. He was absolutely insufferable and I couldn’t bear to watch him. I can’t stand his newer Netflix stuff either, Man Vs Bee/Baby. He’s so incompetent I could just scream!

Anyone else?

I'm glad that a few others have mentioned having a crush on Series 2 Blackadder.

I could never work out why RA seemed downright ugly when he played some characters but was rather sexy as Elizabethan Blackadder.

Rik Mayall was Flashheart.

I remember people saying at the time that (unlike Malcolm McDowell) Rik Mayall would have made a good Harry Flashman (or at least some parts of the character), but that is probably because it seemed that Lord Flasheart was based on Harry Flashman.

Love both Flasheart and especially Flashman.

he owns loads of shops from where he was born and hes let them go into ruin, nobody wants to rent them as the rents are sky high. Its killed the high street due to him being greedy so yanbu.

I don’t like the man v bee and man v baby shows, that sort of thing really stresses me out-when there’s clearly a simple solution but they continue making daft choices and making a bigger mess.
I think RA himself is very talented though. I loved him in BlackAdder and thin blue line. It isn’t his fault that he plays characters I dislike.

EyeLevelStick · 17/12/2025 06:28

I can’t bear Mr Bean, but think Rowan Atkinson is a genius.

I first saw him in Not the Nine O’Clock News, and then Secret Policeman’s Ball (the school register is priceless) and Blackadder (all four, even the first one, are superb).

His vicar in Four Weddings is fantastic, and Maigret was astonishingly good.

I’ve never seen Blackadder, I think it was before my time tbh. I know he’s clever and funny etc, but the slapstick incompetence he portrays so well makes me want to switch off when he comes on. I only ever seem to see him in roles where he plays a complete idiot!

From Series 2, Blackadder is the only character that’s not an idiot. That’s the whole premise.

Except for Bob of course - she’s a hero.

RoamingToaster · 17/12/2025 06:40

I didn’t know so many people disliked Mr Bean. I think physical comedy done well can be funny. I love Charlie Chaplin too.

Rowan Atkinson himself said he didn’t like Mr Bean. He’s not supposed to be a nice person. I think it’s fine not to like some tv show. We all have different tastes. I do find it strange though when some people criticise an old show for having a character who isn’t nice as if that’s what dates it and as if you’re supposed to only have shows with good wholesome people.

It’s the beard and the hair. If he’d kept that look he’d have found himself the recipient of unexpected female attention.

OkWinifred · 17/12/2025 07:12

What a horrible thread.
Perhaps he can’t stand you.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/12/2025 07:13

i like Black Adder
never liked Mr Bean

I have a small and unexpected crush on Rowan Atkinson as Blackadder and Johnny English 😳

Indeed unexpected - I don't see it in Blackadder but by Johnny English there was something about him and in a recent interview he looked hot, which is a sentence I never expected to write, but he has grown into his looks (or is it surgery?)

In all interviews he seems very warm and funny, I also don't like man V baby but it is an act that pays the bills.

AprilinPortugal · 17/12/2025 07:18

Oh but Blackadder!! He was brilliant in that!

JeffTheSquirrel · 17/12/2025 07:19

MissyB1 · 16/12/2025 19:09

He was absolutely brilliant back in my era (80s). Secret Policeman’s ball etc.. some of his skits could make me weep with laughter. You should watch him doing the school register, or the one when he’s the devil welcoming the sinners to hell, or the one where he’s the headmaster and he’s beaten a boy to death “a few fatal beatings” ! Probably not PC now but hysterically funny back then!

I absolutely LOVED Secret Policeman’s Ball, and especially those skits you mentioned. Think I’ve still got my cassette somewhere. Ah, the memories.

Surprised that no one has mentioned he's in a relationship with a woman 26 years his junior. Think he pretty much left his wife for her. James Acaster, her ex, got left for... Mr Bean!
Love him for Blackadder though.

Yes I was scrolling through waiting for this! Poor James acaster.

Dgll · 17/12/2025 07:43

It isn't all my type of comedy, but I have nothing against the man.

Dressered · 17/12/2025 08:01

I really admire Roman Atkinson. He is a very talented actor and comedian. I have a contact who worked with him and he is a kind and unassuming man. He is modest even though he is very intelligent. I dislike the Mumsnetters who proudly announce they can’t stand someone they have never met. I read about the young social media stars who take to heart unwarranted attacks on them and their personality by people who have never met them. It is unkind and unnecessary. You only have to read the recent thread from a poster who was devastated that ChatGBT was unkind about her photo to realise how negativity affects ordinary people. I cannot begin to imagine how nasty these ‘hate’ posters must be in real life.

Dressered · 17/12/2025 08:07

You do know that Justine, the MN founder had a well publicised affair and left her husband of twenty five years. Her life, her business but some posters are so ready to damn infidelity whilst using a platform where the founder has done just that. We don’t know the circumstances. None of our business.

I’m sorry, but what has Justine’s love life got to do with whether or not anyone likes Mr Bean?

Dressered · 17/12/2025 10:26

Some of the posts further up condemning him for his current relationship

Tryingatleast · 17/12/2025 10:29

He made the man vs bee series because he said people find it hard to find anything to watch with their kids that get both laughing and he wanted to add to what was out there. That in itself makes me love him!!

I can’t stand statements like ”I can’t stand Rowan Atkinson”. Especially as a way of opening a discussion inviting others to join in. Why would anyone say such a thing about someone they have never met? You don’t know Rowan Atkinson. You have no idea what sort of person he is. Why can’t you simply quietly accept that you don’t find him funny? Why can’t you stand someone with a different sense of humour? Sounds like a “you-problem”. I don’t find all his work funny but that’s probably because there’s a wide variety of it.

I totally agree with you.

Rowan Atkinson is a real person, with feelings. He is an actor who plays roles. You don't know him. He doesn't stick every detail of his life out there on the internet. He probably also has someone who periodically checks social media to see what is being said.

How would you like it if someone said to you "Oh @AintNobodyHereButUsChickens, I've just come across an anonymous post on line where somebody (who has never even met you) says that they can't stand you"?

I occasionally catch something where the real life (not actors) people featured gave me the absolute rage, but that is for me to deal with, not to go online and say "weren't those people just awful?" and leave it up there for everyone to see/discuss/pile on.

notacooldad · 17/12/2025 10:54

Ive never net Rowan Atkinson so cant really comment to be fair.
I like some of his characters though. Mr Bean isnt my favourite though.

GucciBear · 17/12/2025 10:55

Brilliant as Maigret.

climbintheback · 17/12/2025 11:18

TheIceBear · 17/12/2025 11:28

I like him. I loved Mr.Bean as a child and my child loves him too. I also enjoyed man vs. Baby .
