I can’t stand Rowan Atkinson

Used to love Mr Bean as a kid, I found it on Netflix recently to show the kids and I honestly couldn’t understand how I used to enjoy it at all. He was absolutely insufferable and I couldn’t bear to watch him. I can’t stand his newer Netflix stuff either, Man Vs Bee/Baby. He’s so incompetent I could just scream!

Anyone else?

I totally disagree. My kids and I love watching Mr Bean and his new Netflix shows.

Not something I'd watch alone, but they absolutely crack my 6 year old up, so I am very much on board

StuffyHuffyPuffy · 16/12/2025 20:22

I love him!!

DS 6 and DS 9 love Mr Bean! They even prefer the original series over the cartoon. I've (re)watched it with them, I actually love that Mr Bean was not a innocent character. Mr Bean was/is a clueless selfish asshole and I love him for it 😁.

I don't recall much of his other work as I was a bit young for it all when it aired and never caught reruns, but I've appreciated clips of Blackadder.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 16/12/2025 20:24

I never liked Mr Bean (except at the Olympic opening ceremony). But otherwise enjoy not the 9 o clock news and Blackadder, love actually.

He’s a nice person, helped DH out with his band equipment years ago when his van broke down. Quiet, unassuming and polite. Very into engines, big petrolhead.

He was absolutely brilliant back in my era (80s). Secret Policeman’s ball etc.. some of his skits could make me weep with laughter. You should watch him doing the school register, or the one when he’s the devil welcoming the sinners to hell, or the one where he’s the headmaster and he’s beaten a boy to death “a few fatal beatings” ! Probably not PC now but hysterically funny back then!

Toby the devil! The drunken Brits in the Indian restaurant was so subtle. Plus loved the invisible drumming & him singing the European Anthem.

Lonelycrab · 16/12/2025 20:28

Ds (13) and my ex and Exmil loved man vs baby…

I thought it was cringey, predictable dross. I don’t think I even smirked once, let alone laugh. Mind numbingly dull.

Edit to add: Blackadder was genius though.

LovesLabradors · 16/12/2025 20:28

Love Rowan Atkinson.
Never been a fan of Mr Bean, but loved him in Not the Nine o'clock News, Blackadder, Johnny English etc.
I just watched Man vs Baby and actually loved it. Bit silly, but so good natured and enjoyable (a rare thing these days!)

FrostyMorn · 16/12/2025 20:30

He comes across as a very decent and intelligent guy in interviews (e.g. Graham Norton).
Rewatching The Thin Blue Line on iplayer gave me a very nostalgic boost during lockdown. Underrated if dated.

Nelly91 · 16/12/2025 20:31

Love him and the characters

sanityisamyth · 16/12/2025 20:32

Not even Rowan Atkinson likes the characters he plays. He comes across as a really nice bloke.

RecordBreakers · 16/12/2025 20:33

Not the Nine o'clock news was superb. Some absolute masterpieces during those series. So topical and so funny (as were his co-stars).
Mr Bean, being mime, worked so well for an international audience, and was funny in it's time.
Secret Policeman's Ball (and other ball) was / were very funny.
BlackAdder, was comic genius.

I watched Man vs Baby just last week and it did make me cross with all the "plot holes" / safeguarding issues / incompetence / complete unlikeliness of the thing.

Loads of other stuff of course.

But that's the thing with humour isn't it - different things appeal to different people. Seems a bit strange that you don't like any of his work, when he has done so many different things.

CalzoneOnLegs · 16/12/2025 20:35

BBC / Richard Curtis poodle

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 16/12/2025 20:36

I kind of get what you mean, I was at primary school when Mr Bean was on the TV, we watched it as a family. I hated it, I felt such worry for him with his mistakes that he was going to get into awful trouble. I couldn't understand how it was supposed to be funny. There was an episode I particularly remember with a precious old book that he ended up scribbling all over and I had to leave the room, it made me feel sick, I was probably about 9.

But I loved him in The Thin Blue Line and Blackadder. Absolutely amazing acting, and so completely different, and utterly convincing. As was Mr Bean tbf, if he hadn't been so convincing I might even have found it funny!

LlynTegid · 16/12/2025 20:36

Some things are of their time, and much of his work seems that way.

OneBusyFinch · 16/12/2025 20:37

I bloody love Rowan Atkinson! I love not the nine o clock news and all his standup. Love The Thin Blue Line and Blackadder. I even like the first series of Blackadder - the Queen of Spain’s beard is brilliant! I had a massive crush on him as Blackadder

I really hope he does another standup tour - I would love to see him live

Happyjoe · 16/12/2025 20:39

Bean, hate slapstick, infuriating horrible. Blackadder - fab.

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 16/12/2025 20:40

I just treated myself to the Blackadder box set, as my Dvd copy of Blackadders Christmas Carol wore out.

I have very lustful thoughts about the costumes he wears in Season 2 and Season 3.

I read that he was bullied as a young boy for his bad stutter, and manages it with an acting technique called over-articulation to overcome problematic consonants, especially the letter "B", but then turned it into a comedic device, e.g. when he pronounces the name "Bob".

PerspicaciaTick · 16/12/2025 20:42

SnowTrouble · 16/12/2025 20:02

Not Backadder 1 though, just Blackadder 2.

A friend of a friend works at his private bank, apparently he can't bear to talk to any woman who answers the phone and has to be passed onto a Man ASP as only men know how to handle money (or something)

Mostly 2, but also 4 and occasionally 3.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/12/2025 20:43

He's a phenomenally talented actor, but was renowned around Waterperry as a bIt of a C

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 16/12/2025 20:44

That was the whole point to Mr Bean, though. He was incompetent at pretty much everything, but lovable and funny.

The way he pronounces his 'p's and 'b's was also part of his comedic appeal. When he was on Top Gear, he was given a list of words and phrases with 'p's and 'b's to say out loud and it was funny.

I don't think it's Mr Bean that epitomises Rowan, but rather Blackadder. Probably because that's the same dry wit and dark humour that appeals to me.

Couldn't agree more - I loved all of that! I had some audio cassettes from that time. A particular favourite was the Tom, Dick and Harry skit! Or the wedding one!

NormasArse · 16/12/2025 20:47

Mr Bean was something I could watch with my kids. I loved that.

SarahAndQuack · 16/12/2025 20:49

I love him in Blackadder, but Mr Bean always made me uncomfortable - we were at the age when that came out where teachers would be very strict about never making fun of someone for how they spoke, or not being mean to someone if they made a mistake, and it really puzzled me that we were then being encouraged to laugh at what seemed like exactly the same things.

As an adult I might find it funny but I've never been able to watch more than a tiny bit without cringing. I think it went over my head that he (the character) thinks he's being clever - I just thought we were laughing at someone who couldn't do things properly.

Littlebuddh · 16/12/2025 20:55

Hes just acting.
Its like other shows and actours,if you dont like them dont watch them.
