I can’t stand Rowan Atkinson

Used to love Mr Bean as a kid, I found it on Netflix recently to show the kids and I honestly couldn’t understand how I used to enjoy it at all. He was absolutely insufferable and I couldn’t bear to watch him. I can’t stand his newer Netflix stuff either, Man Vs Bee/Baby. He’s so incompetent I could just scream!

Anyone else?

That’s Tony Robinson

I could forgive him anything for Blackadder Goes Forth but, additionally, one of my DDs saw him at a school sports event (his child was competing in the same event as mine) and he was so patient with autographs and posing for photos.

I need to go and rewatch Blackadder Goes Forth. Bloody hilarious. Hugh Laurie, Tony Robinson, Stephen Fry and Rik Mayall. Bloody brilliant.

Captain Darling was hilarious 😂

It’s aimed at kida though isnt it?

paddingtoncoffee · 16/12/2025 19:51

Also previous poster who mentioned "black adder goes forth": utterly, tremendously, everything a drama should be. In a comedy. Black humour at its best

I have a small and unexpected crush on Rowan Atkinson as Blackadder and Johnny English 😳

He's very sexy as Blackadder II in his tights and codpiece. I used to have a picture of him in those clothes, cut from the Radio Times, on my wardrobe door as a teenager 😆

Carlathomasillneverstoplovingyou · 16/12/2025 19:52

Not the nine o clock news was ace.

Can't work out how to reply! But yes, ignore me entirely! I'm totally confused

I don't think the man is offensive. He has a masters degree and a ridiculously high IQ. He is amazing. Maybe it is more the characters he has played that annoy people.

This. You v.rarely hear of him or see him on anything now. Maybe the odd film role but he has made a lot of money and has achieved success both in films and his own series. Seemingly no social media. Good for him (and me)

I'll echo pp. I don't like or dislike Rowan Atkinson himself.

I have never found Mr Bean funny because physical humour doesn't really appeal to me but I have always loved Blackadder (especially series 2 onwards).

I have always loved Blackadder (especially series 2 onwards).

That was when Richard Curtis brought Ben Elton in to co-write, and they fundamentally changed the series.

RA is a genious comedian, but aspects of his comedy may not be for everyone.

cariadlet · 16/12/2025 19:56

I'd forgotten about him in Maigret. I agree that he's great in it. So different from the comedy roles that made him famous.

Vicliz24 · 16/12/2025 19:57

In the early 80,s he was phenomenal as part of Not the Nine o clock News and his stand up was really great . Adored Blackadder ( even the first ) . I have very fond memories of the first ever Comic Relief too . Mr Bean was never my thing but everything else I’ve enjoyed. Had quite a crush on, as many others did on Blackadder the second.

RaininSummer · 16/12/2025 19:59

Never liked Bean but loved Blackadder.

Yes, I remember that at the time.

In the first series, Blackadder was a weaselly, snivelling character. From the Elizabethan one onwards, he was the intelligent mastermind whose schemes went awry because of the incompetence of those around him.

StillCreatingAName · 16/12/2025 20:02

Best laid cunning plan to start an anti Rowan Atkinson thread, despite his incredible creative and genius career. How is that going for you OP? Perhaps a Baldrick coffee and a biscuit is needed?

Not Backadder 1 though, just Blackadder 2.

A friend of a friend works at his private bank, apparently he can't bear to talk to any woman who answers the phone and has to be passed onto a Man ASP as only men know how to handle money (or something)

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 16/12/2025 20:04

Johnny English makes me laugh so much. It’s a fantastic British parody of a British franchise.

Blackadder was also very good, if a bit formula by the end. But that was the writers, not RA.

Mr Bean is Marmite. I’m an avoider of Bean but only because I find it awkward to watch an incompetent, as was the same with Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em and Norman Wisdom.

Generally I’d agree with a pp that RA is touched with genius.

Floogal · 16/12/2025 20:06

I like most of the things he's been in.

Smartiepants79 · 16/12/2025 20:08

Black adder is genius.
Rowan Atkinson is an extremely intelligent, nice man. Mr Bean is not my favourite. But that’s one of his characters. Not him.

Thank goodness someone mentioned Not the Nine O'Clock News. I was beginning to think that I'm the oldest person left on Mumsnet because that's what I think of first when I think about his work. I'm not a Mr Bean fan, or Johnny English or the more recent films, but I do love Blackadder.

JudgeBread · 16/12/2025 20:12

...but why do you hate Rowan Atkinson?

I dealt with him a few times in my old job and he's lovely, polite and respectful, unlike a lot of other celebrities I had the misfortune to speak with.

Mr. Bean is intended to be funny to children which is probably why you, presumably an adult, now don't find the character funny.

Bodypumpmum · 16/12/2025 20:15

hes earned a fortune, clearly done alright for himself.

Ddakji · 16/12/2025 20:18

Blackadder II. Woof!

Orphlids · 16/12/2025 20:20

I love Mr Bean! I still find it very funny. I love the Christmas episode, especially the bit where he conducts the brass band, and turns their volume up and down.

My kids were watching The Witches tonight, and I thought how good an actor he was in that - not just comedic, but his more subtle observational performance.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 16/12/2025 20:22

I can’t stand statements like ”I can’t stand Rowan Atkinson”. Especially as a way of opening a discussion inviting others to join in. Why would anyone say such a thing about someone they have never met? You don’t know Rowan Atkinson. You have no idea what sort of person he is. Why can’t you simply quietly accept that you don’t find him funny? Why can’t you stand someone with a different sense of humour? Sounds like a “you-problem”. I don’t find all his work funny but that’s probably because there’s a wide variety of it.
