So he's sane enough to get the sharpest lawyer possible

JackJarvisEsq · 17/12/2025 19:09

Thanks I really could have googled that, not having the most functioning mind today!

Yes, it's the same guy. He also represented Harvey Weinsein and Kevin Spacey.

What a job, you must have to be a certain type of person!

😄 don't worry, god knows I've been there...

I wonder if Nick arranged the lawyer himself or someone else did....

elprup · 17/12/2025 22:32

The court sketches are bizarre!

elprup · 17/12/2025 22:33

Also, why couldn’t he be photographed?

MyOtherProfile · 17/12/2025 23:11

You're not usually allowed to take photos in court. It's the same in the UK.

It says here the judge ruled there could be no photos taken of Reiner in court - which suggests it’s something that ordinarily would be allowed?

Oh do yourself a favour and rectify that this Christmas!

MyOtherProfile · 18/12/2025 07:28

@elprup from what I understand the general rule in the US as in the UK is no photos in court, which is why you get so many artist impressions.

However you can submit a request in some courts in the US to take photos. I guess the judge was preempting that and saying a blanket no.

berlinbaby2025 · 18/12/2025 08:53

How on earth could he afford that lawyer? Is there a legal aid system there?

AttackCat · 18/12/2025 09:06

I am still feeling devastated about these murders, I don’t think I’ve ever felt so emotional about the deaths of anyone famous.

Partly because it’s so horrifying and tragic.

Partly because it feels personal as he was behind so many films I hold in such affection, particularly When Harry Met Sally which I just adore and the fact that Rob meeting Michele was the true life love story behind WHMS always made it feel particularly special.

It’s just so sad.

MyOtherProfile · 18/12/2025 09:16

I agree @AttackCat

Presumably family wealth, which feels a horrible irony.

I would be surprised if any of the family are funding this given what happened.

I asked about this earlier in the thread - it seems ridiculous that he gets this hot shot defense attorney when I would hazard a guess he doesn’t have much money… he doesn’t seem to have worked much beyond writing the script for Being Charlie 10 years ago.

Maybe he inherited from his grandfather who died a few years ago? However given the fact that he apparently relapsed into drug use in the last few years, I can’t imagine he would have much money to pay the fees. Maybe the attorney is operating on a no win no fee basis?

Also could he benefit financially from his parents’ wealth if he is convicted of their murder? Surely not.

The whole thing seems bizarre.

I was thinking previous inheritance, trust fund etc - that he may already be independently wealthy because of his family background. Rather than anyone else in the family paying for it. Though god knows it must be a horrific position to be in as the family, how do you begin to process what has happened.

berlinbaby2025 · 18/12/2025 11:37

He’d been homeless and on Sunday night checked into an average hotel, so I doubt he’s currently rich enough to pay this lawyer.

Assuming Rob and Michelle named Nick in their wills, I just read that Nick will find himself ineligible to inherit because of the California law called ‘slayer statue’ so if you murder someone you’re due to inherit from and you’re convicted and sane, you don’t get a penny from the estate. But if he’s found not guilty due to insanity then he could be allowed to inherit, which his lawyer will be well aware of, of course.

it’s publicity for the attorney, great exposure for him to drum up even more business. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s working for free.

Geez yeh I bet the defence will be.

Those poor people, I just saw some images on IG, they looked like kind loving parents. Very sad.

My knowledge of the law mostly comes from crime fiction, so this may not be spot on, but I believe that UK murderers also do not inherit from their victims. I would imagine it's a sensible precaution in all jurisdictions.

There was a case in Scotland (again, gleaned from watching Sick Sad World type late night true crime documentaries on TV) where a son did control the estate after murdering his mum even though he was convicted .

The loophole was closed last year

BBC Scotland - BBC Scotland - ‘My brother killed our mum and he is STILL in charge of her estate’

Lorraine Taggart’s killer brother ‘torments’ the family from his cell.

Do they? I think it's very rare.

Rob Reiner contributed way more to the world than any member of the royal family.
