Anecdote about wanking off three men in a random wood in Edinburgh or something. Everyone laughed hysterically.

Is it just me or have TV chat shows gone really downhill? Confused

I am so curious why we would be envious.

Of her great beauty?
Her toilet humour?
Her youth?
Her fantastic figure?
Her boyfriend, Jason Momoa?

🤣

She's clever, witty, funny, talented, famous and successful. And not spending her weekend making unkind remarks about other women's looks on MN

I said there is some envy going on here - I didn't say this applies to you.

Well TBF, I’m literally the one that decided to go online and start a thread about her on here.

I have no idea what people are envious of - I just can't think of any other reason for the disproportionate amount of negativity towards female celebrities on MN.

Maybe her racist comments- that could be a small clue

I think James Corden is a prick too, to even that out for you.

Now, I must go and weep in the corner, oh, my miserable, bitter existence.

She makes plenty of unkind comments about others - have you not seen her in interviews?

Happy people don't spend their Saturdays slagging off celebrities on MN

You’re really over thinking this. There’s no envy (of Miriam, really??). One doesn’t need to be unhappy to criticise a celebrity and this is a forum. Are people allowed to slag off celebrities on a Thursday?

Are you a friend as you are taking this thread very personally?

Criticising is one thing... but 'vile', 'vulgur' etc - it's really quite extreme!

MidnightColours · 29/11/2025 12:26

The Graham Norton show isn't a live programme and as a PP who was in the audience has alluded to, unfortunately this is an editorial decision by GN and his team. He's an intelligent and talented man, but he's clearly decided this is what generates clicks. If on top of everything else there was an element of coercion in the anecdote, it simply shouldn't have been broadcast and he bears responsibility. I won't watch now btw, as all the fake chuckling is going to sound faintly sinister now - and that's not entertainment!
Instead I'll be listening to the Bill Nighy podcast :)

There’s nothing that makes me happier than slagging off celebrities tbh. Grin

I mean, a bit silly to imply I was saying people aren't allowed to slag off celebrities. Of course they are.

Sadly I'm not a friend of MM's 😀

Superhansrantowindsor · 29/11/2025 08:46

she is foul mouthed. Which is fine if you know your company and audience but I’ve seen her use disgusting language in earshot of young children. People seem to find it funny - old lady says rude word.
As mother would say- it’s not big and it’s not clever. It shows you have a limited vocabulary.

I agree with most of this, but not that people who swear have a limited vocabulary. That’s just not true often enough to be useful. As Billy Connolly said, “I know thousands of words but I still prefer fuck”.
It’s choosing your audience and circumstance though. She doesn’t.

It’s really wierd to me. She is clearly a very intelligent and talented woman so why on earth does she behave like that? I can only guess deep seated self esteem issues that go a long way back. She is the only woman celebrity I can think of who actually makes me feel physically sick.

Self esteem issues?! Miriam Margolyes?! Long live women who don't care about being respectable I say. We need more of it.

ForHazelTiger · 29/11/2025 12:36

Dare I say it, part of appreciating someone's humour is seeing the nuance - someone using vulgar language is not just someone using vulgar language. There are a million different ways of doing it.

BatshitOutofHell · 29/11/2025 12:36

ThisCanHappen · 29/11/2025 07:41

This is so true. I've recently watched a few old episodes of Call my Bluff and Face the Music. I watched these as a child and they were mainstream TV. Watching them now, the guests, the topics, the level of sophistication is startling compared to the fodder we get fed by broadcasters now. Bread and circuses springs to mind.

Another startling thing is that many of the guests are older, something you hardly ever see in these youth obsessed times.

What you really mean is long live women with no manners or regard for other people. Does that go for men too or are only women allowed to be gross?

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 29/11/2025 12:38

I usually find her funny but that story was pretty low bar. I didn’t understand why man number one was in a tree either.

But why does she choose this way of displaying her intelligence? Is she trying to make herself more relatable? Are we not able to relate to a clever older woman these days so they have to play the fool?

Can happy people discuss

  1. The message MM may be giving young women by her assertion that she ‘couldn’t really say no’
  2. Whether it’s a sign of misogyny that MM can’t just be interviewed in relation to her obvious talents as an actor
  3. Whether 2 has led MM to develop a persona to keep her in the public eye, particularly given that she is neither young nor beautiful
  4. Whether similar stories from a man would be acceptable
Joalla · 29/11/2025 12:41

MM makes me feel a bit queasy. She’s very coarse and very keen on herself, don’t like at all, definitely couldn’t tolerate her on a chat show. GH seems to have a prurience that I also recoil from, don’t like at all. Bring back Parkinson! ( not literally, obv..)

Lastfroginthebox · 29/11/2025 12:41

ForHazelTiger · 29/11/2025 12:05

That is usually the reason behind these kinds of threads, yes

Why would anyone be jealous of Miriam Margolyes?

SirChenjins · 29/11/2025 12:43

She's like your foul mouthed old aunt with all her faculties who lands on you every Christmas and spends the time swearing and farting, and generally getting on everyone's tits. It doesn't become wittier as someone gets older. The shock factor of MM is becoming predictably boring.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 29/11/2025 12:43

Love graham norton show. Love the mix of guests he has. I do like MM. however, it felt like she was very rude to the male guest and trying to make it all about her and talking over people. Don’t mind her at all. But was a bit uncomfortable last night just due to her rudeness.

IcedPurple · 29/11/2025 12:43

77ner · 29/11/2025 08:43

Exactly. Imagine a man joking about ‘doing’ three women in a forest and everyone laughing their heads off.

I honestly think the ‘old lady says a lot of dirty, shocking things’ is very out of date.

Yes, the 'dirty old woman' thing is wearing very thin. Has been for at least a decade now. Not only was that 'story' disgusting, it's not remotely funny either.

On an entirely more pleasant note, does almost 50 year old Alexander Skarsgard have a picture in his attic? What a ridiculously beautiful man. Absolutely gentleman too. Sigh...
