Anecdote about wanking off three men in a random wood in Edinburgh or something. Everyone laughed hysterically.

Is it just me or have TV chat shows gone really downhill? Confused

Ooh, we have a “pearl clutching” for anyone playing MN Bingo. Grin

But have we had any ADHD yet? Or autism?

We've had dementia!

I think he just didn't know how to handle an older women making filthy jokes

I’m an older woman myself. Not as old as MM, but still. I have, like her, the vocabulary of a highly educated sailor. I can be pretty vulgar myself. I can handle it. She’s just OTT with it and seems to think she’s a one-off when she’s just boring now.

Of course all performers have to make money by performing. Miriam Margolies has been an extremely successful actor over a period of very many years and has worked with any number of other famous actors. She’s also very articulate. She must have dozens of anecdotes she could polish up and deliver on chat shows. Why does she always choose the same grotesque anecdotes which are simply uncomfortable rather than actually funny? Why has she made herself into a cartoon?

Absolutely. I saw something she said about Gaza a while back - beautifully done with empathy and articulately constructed. She can speak like that, and she’d be more interesting if she did.

I didn’t use to like her then I saw her on the Australian travel programmes and thought she was wonderful. Watch those and you will see her true personality shine through. Yes she tries to shock people I was in fits of laughter at her rude anecdote last night but didn’t believe it for a minute. She reminds me of a child who is saying something outrageously naughty sees you are laughing and gets worse ! I love her sense of fun or maybe she appeals to older women more than young.

Nope, older woman here and I really dislike Margolyes. I'm not a fan of unpleasant, foul mouthed women

ForHazelTiger · 29/11/2025 11:54

I think there must be a bit of envy going on here - if I don't like someone I don't feel the need to go online and tell everyone about it, I just switch channels.

Is there really such a thing as MN Bingo?

Mumsnet bingo: We must all be jealous of her 🙄

BINGO! it must be envy!

ForHazelTiger · 29/11/2025 11:58

Personally I'd love to know Miriam Margolyes - I'd be a bit scared of her, but I think she'd be a total hoot.

I met her a couple of times and when she's not "on", she's quite cold and brusque. She wasn't rude to me (although she was to a PP) but she definitely wasn't fun to talk to.

That isn't really engaging with my point.

I can imagine that actually.

There are certain women in the public eye who always seem to crop up on negative threads here - it's hardly ever men.

It's a chat board. People are chatting. They click on a thread because it sounds like it might be vaguely interesting and then if it is, they might post their two pence worth.

It's just bizarre to imagine that because this particular thread was about someone on the Graham Norton show, many of the people putting in their two-pence worth must be jealous of that person.

Actually it's quite interesting thinking about it, it sounds like internalized misogyny. Women can't possibly comment on the behavior of another woman or cultural developments or mores, without it being an expression of jealousy.

We can all psycho analyse other internet sprites.

That is usually the reason behind these kinds of threads, yes

Happy people don't spend their Saturdays slagging off celebrities on MN

I read a fascinating article about why it’s like that, rather than being in-depth and more unpredictable like Parkinson – I wish I could find it again, but it said there was deliberate policy at the BBC to avoid any risk of conversations getting into difficult territory like depression.

The strange thing was that it wasn’t really fears around broadcasting the content, as such – the reason was actually out of a perceived duty of care towards the guests, and the idea that a host can lure guests into sharing things they might not necessarily want to share.

Isn’t luring guests into saying stuff they might not otherwise reveal the job of an interviewer?

@PuppyMonkey you don’t have to watch, there’s so much choice to choose from, just switch over, if you feel this way! Personally no, l don’t think tv chat shows have gone downhill.

Is this because they’ve always been shite?

Can you let us know what we might be envious of as I’d love to know, the curiosity is killing me.

user5873829 · 29/11/2025 12:21

I am so curious why we would be envious.

Of her great beauty?
Her toilet humour?
Her youth?
Her fantastic figure?
Her boyfriend, Jason Momoa?

🤣

I have no idea what people are envious of - I just can't think of any other reason for the disproportionate amount of negativity towards female celebrities on MN.

Um.. I do.

She’s put herself in the public eye. She didn’t have to be an actress. Or, she could have been an actress but chosen not to be so ridiculous for attention.

Either way, put yourself in the public eye, people will talk.

Chatting shit on a forum about someone I actually don’t give much thought to does not show my level of happiness. I can say I think she’s a dick and them move on with my day.

Would I only be happy if I said good things about celebrities?
